For all his dreams of the future, Nagato could only watch in horror as his comrades — those he truly regarded as companions — were being slaughtered by the very ninja of Amegakure whom he too had once called allies.

He froze in place, too stunned to move. The sudden violence was overwhelming.

"Why? Why are they attacking us?"

"Yahiko! Move!"

Konan shoved Yahiko aside just in time, dodging a flying kunai.

In an instant, an Ame ninja appeared behind Konan using the Body Flicker Technique, seizing her from behind and pulling her away.

"Konan!"

[Wind Release: Gale Palm!]

Nagato clapped his hands together, compressing wind chakra into a violent gust that blew toward the enemy holding Konan.

But it was too late — Konan had already been taken.

"Yahiko, snap out of it! Konan's been captured!"

Nagato shook Yahiko violently, snapping him back to reality.

"After them! Let's go!"

Behind them, their comrades had all been wiped out. With no other choice, Yahiko and Nagato gave chase to the ninja who had abducted Konan.

They arrived at a valley — meant to be the site for a trilateral meeting.

Now, it was the setting of their worst nightmare.

Standing atop the cliff were Danzo, Chiya, Root Division ninjas, Sanshouo Hanzo, and his subordinates, lined up and watching coldly.

Chiya's gaze locked onto Nagato.

This was his first time seeing the Rinnegan.

An incredible asset — but its current wielder isn't worthy.

Yahiko's face twisted in pain and anguish. "Why?! Lord Hanzo, weren't we working together for peace? Why have you betrayed us?!"

Sanshouo Hanzo yanked Konan forward by the arm, looking down at Yahiko from above. "You've become a thorn in my side, Yahiko. As your leader, you die here today. If you resist, this woman dies."

Sanshouo Hanzo threw a kunai knife before Yahiko and Nagato.

Then he turned his gaze to Nagato. "You, red-haired one — use this kunai to kill Yahiko. Save me the trouble, and I'll spare you and this girl."

Konan screamed desperately. "Stop! Nagato! Forget about me! Both of you run!"

Nagato stared at the kunai on the ground, trembling.

Yahiko took a deep breath. "Nagato... Kill me," he whispered.

It felt as if someone were squeezing Nagato's throat. His breath came in ragged gasps.

"Nagato!" Yahiko cried out.

"Stop!" Konan shouted.

Growing impatient, Sanshouo Hanzo pressed, "Hurry! Do you not care if she dies?"

Like a lifeless puppet, Nagato slowly picked up the kunai lying on the ground. Gazing at its sharp edge, his breathing became heavier and heavier.

Yahiko and Konan were the two people Nagato had sworn to protect. Now, he was forced to make a choice...

Nagato looked at Konan, who was being held hostage, and murmured, "Konan..."

Then he turned his gaze toward Yahiko. "Yahiko—"

Yahiko suddenly rushed forward, deliberately letting the kunai pierce his abdomen. He leaned heavily against Nagato, resting his chin on Nagato's shoulder.

Smiling gently, Yahiko whispered, "Live on with Konan... No matter what happens. You're this world's savior... It's you... Actually..."

Yahiko didn't finish his last sentence before collapsing lifelessly onto the ground.

Konan screamed desperately through her pain, "Yahiko!"

Nagato tightly gripped the bloodstained kunai in his hand, his Rinnegan eyes wide open in shock as he stood frozen in place.

Chinya narrowed his eyes, watching Yahiko's fallen body.

Didn't the kunai in Nagato's hand pierce Yahiko's abdomen just now?

Such an injury, though severe, shouldn't have killed Yahiko so quickly, right?

Sanshouo Hanzo obviously had no intention of sparing Nagato and Konan. He coldly ordered, "Attack!"

The Rain Ninja hurled numerous kunai toward Nagato.

At that moment, Nagato recalled a phrase Yahiko once told him.

"If this world is doomed to endless war, then I'll become its god!"

Suddenly, Nagato's demeanor shifted completely. He raised his right hand, and all the kunai flying toward him were deflected away.

The Rain Ninja gawked in shock at what they were seeing.

"All of them blocked?"

"How did he do that?!"

Nagato suddenly leaped forward, rushing directly toward Sanshouo Hanzo and Konan.

However, Sanshouo Hanzo chose to abandon Konan and retreated backward.

He slammed one hand against the ground.

As Nagato scooped up Konan, explosive tags suddenly emerged from the ground, wrapping around both of Nagato's legs.

[Fire Release: Exploding Flame Formation!]

An explosion instantly erupted, shattering rocks and filling the air with smoke and dust.

Sanshouo Hanzo peered into the smoke, muttering, "[Fire Release: Exploding Flame Formation] work?"

Yet Nagato had already appeared beside Yahiko, gently placing Konan next to him.

Meanwhile, flames still burned fiercely on Nagato's legs.

Once the fire subsided, Nagato's legs were severely burned.

Concerned, Konan looked at him. "Nagato..."

"Stay here and hold onto Yahiko, Konan," Nagato instructed as he placed her down.

Sneering at Nagato, Sanshouo Hanzo mocked, "Not bad, brat. Surviving my Fire Release attack? Impressive."

Nagato fixed Sanshouo Hanzo with a cold stare using his Rinnegan.

Sanshouo Hanzo's expression became extremely serious because he could feel something unusual about Nagato's eyes.

Danzo glanced at the Root Division ninja behind him.

Instantly, all of Danzo's Root ninja charged toward Nagato.

Furious, Nagato slammed his palm onto the ground. "Summoning Jutsu: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path!"

A massive hand burst from the earth, swatting several Root ninja away in one powerful strike.

Then half of the monstrous form of the Demonic Statue emerged, roaring with immense force and intimidation.

Staring in shock at the Demonic Statue, Sanshouo Hanzo asked incredulously, "What is this?"

Danzo's expression darkened as he stared at the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, uncertain what this thing even was.

Chinya's heart pounded slightly faster.

The shell of the Ten-Tails — even now, without having absorbed a single Tailed Beast yet — this pressure alone still made Chinya feel uneasy.

Konan pleaded as she tried to stop him: "Nagato, don't use that!"

But Nagato, now fully overtaken by rage, wasn't listening at all.

Graaah!

As Nagato roared, sharp black chakra rods emerged from within the body of the Demonic Statue, piercing into Nagato's own body.

Nagato's chakra connected with that of the statue.

His body visibly weakened and seemed to wither before their very eyes.

The Demonic Statue opened its mouth, spewing forth a dragon-shaped mass of purple chakra [chakra dragon].

Any ninja caught by the chakra dragon had their chakra instantly sucked away and died on the spot.

Danzo then said, "Chinya, get down there and have some fun with him."

"Yes sir, Danzo-sama!"

With his elbow resting on his Ninja Sword, Chinya jumped off the cliff and landed right before Nagato.
