Eventually, Tobirama decided to pass the Hokage title to Hiruzen and stayed behind to fight them alone, allowing his guards to escape. He managed to get away but was fatally wounded and soon died.

"Kinkaku and Ginkaku were immensely powerful, using the Six Paths Ninja Tools to kill the Second Raikage and mortally wound Tobirama. But they themselves were severely injured too. When they returned to Hidden Cloud, the new Third Raikage declared them traitors and hunted them down, seizing the Amber Purifying Pot. The brothers escaped with the remaining four tools and disappeared. They must have died somewhere, and the four tools should be with their corpses."
