Chapter 37: Water Release: Water Formation Wall
In the Gobi battlefield, both Konoha and the Mist-nin suffered heavy casualties.
The two newly formed Anbu squads had been torn apart again—barely enough men left to form one full squad.
Captain Black Ant returned to Konoha to report, while Captain Hound reorganized the survivors to continue searching for Uzumaki remnants across the Land of Waves.
One-armed Captain Black Ape had new subordinates now—but he trusted Yako most. Yako's newly assigned team became his direct underlings, staying by his side constantly.
For over ten days, their squad moved across multiple ports in the Land of Waves, investigating leads and looking for traces of surviving Uzumaki.
The full moon shone like a silver disc, moonlight like frost.
Their search had turned up nothing. And again, the full moon returned.
During a rare moment of rest, Captain Black Ape handed a personnel scroll to Yako.
Yako opened the scroll—names, ages, and skillsets of over a dozen team members were recorded.
This intel helped captains get to know their men quickly, to plan tactics accordingly.
"Captain, Anbu turnover is way too fast," Yako muttered. "Since I joined, I've already had multiple squad leaders and captains."
"Same with these guys," he continued. "After the next battle, many of them will be gone. And before the battle after that, just as many will show up again."
Black Ape was training his remaining arm with a rock, working to regain combat strength. He responded, "I heard that Lord Danzō is planning to form a division within Anbu called Root."
"Root will train new Anbu, boost our power, and hopefully prevent these mass casualties."
"That's a damn good idea, honestly. Hell, I've gone through three Anbu captains myself. Captain Hound's the strongest by far—can't believe he's survived six months."
Ever since Yako found him maimed and hiding in the capital of the Land of Waves, Black Ape's attitude toward him had shifted. There was loyalty now—respect.
While they were resting, Yako suddenly heard a distinct splash of water.
"Enemy attack!"
The shout rang out, and Yako leapt to his feet.
A Water Dragon Bullet surged out from the woods, gouging a deep trench into the earth.
Classic Mist-nin jutsu.
Black Ape hurled the rock in his hand into the trees.
Unknowingly, Yako had become the strongest squad leader in the unit.
His kenjutsu—developed through battles with Kumogakure shinobi—had earned the respect of his peers.
Basic swordsmanship, mixed with Cloud-style Kenjutsu and enhanced by his upgraded reflexes, made Yako a taijutsu powerhouse among chūnin.
He drew a kunai with an explosive tag and threw it toward the trees. Then he unsheathed his ninjatō and charged.
He needed that Water-nature chakra affinity. It was the only thing that could reliably counter Konoha's Fire Release users—especially from the inside.
Rounding a large tree, Yako caught sight of a Mist Anbu finishing hand seals.
That terrifying Water Dragon—he was the caster.
Other Konoha Anbu entered the forest behind Yako, but he stayed focused—his target was the water-release squad leader.
"Water Release: Water Formation Wall!"
Seeing the glint of Yako's blade, the Mist-nin hastily used a defensive Water Release technique.
Black Ape arrived behind them, scanning the situation.
He immediately saw Yako's sword slicing toward the Water Formation Wall.
That... cutting through ninjutsu? Even for Yako, it was a stretch.
But Yako's blade slashed through the lower part of the Water Formation Wall. The current deflected his blade upward.
Visually, it looked like the blade had sliced the water diagonally apart.
The Mist-nin flinched.
A kunai slipped through the opening Yako had created and embedded in the Mist-nin's shoulder.
So fast—how was this Anbu able to chain a sword slash and a kunai throw so seamlessly?
His reflexes… were unreal.
Thankfully, the Mist-nin had a trump card.
From the corpse of a fallen Uzumaki, he had acquired sealing techniques.
Injured, he tossed a scroll with his left hand.
From the scroll burst a wave of seawater—not chakra-generated, but stored, crashing down on the Konoha shinobi.
Yako's instincts screamed.
They've stopped using Water Release to make water—they're using Uzumaki sealing to store it.
Where there's death, there's opportunity.
Since the fall of the Uzumaki Clan, the sealing prowess of the Mist, Konoha, and even the Cloud had surged.
The seawater receded—Yako was trapped inside a Water Prison.
Black Ape tried to reach him, but the Mist squad captain cut him off.
Minutes passed. Yako drowned—again.
The moonlight returned, flooding Yako's dilated pupils as clarity returned to his eyes.
He coughed violently—the suffocation still lingered in his lungs.
**[Moon Arc Activated!
Host has one resurrection per month, reviving on the night of the full moon.
Reward: One spin]
1 - Water-nature Chakra Affinity
2 - Chūnin-Level Chakra Reserves (stackable)
3 - Sealing Technique: Water Storage Seal**
The Water Storage Seal—that scroll the Mist-nin used to unleash a wave of real seawater.
A godsend for Water Release users. No more chakra cost for generating water from nothing.
Chūnin-level chakra reserves were always tempting…
But Yako picked Water-nature Chakra Affinity.
Short-term danger always outweighs long-term plans. If he was going to fight fire-style users from Konoha, Water Release was essential.
He felt a strange heat in his lower back.
He could now directly use his kidneys to refine chakra. When blended with his muscle-produced chakra—it created Water-nature Chakra.
Earth chakra came from the spleen.
Water chakra came from the kidneys.
To develop a new elemental affinity, one had to stimulate the organ repeatedly with chakra. A dangerous process that often failed.
But now, he had it—no effort needed.
A few days later, Yako stood outside the forest where his squad was resting.
He was ready.
This time, the moment the Water Dragon appeared, he shouted a warning, buying himself half a second.
Using that time, he formed the Ram seal for a Shadow Clone.
This time, the clone baited, the real body struck.
He landed a critical blow on the Mist-nin.
In the following skirmish, Yako's swordsmanship claimed three more Mist-nin lives—swift, clean kills.
Once again, Captain Black Ape and the squad recognized Yako's strength.
After the fight, Yako hoisted a captive Mist-nin and began to walk off.
Black Ape called after him, "That one special?"
Yako didn't hide anything.
"Captain, I've just recently awakened Water-nature chakra. It's now my secondary affinity."
"Gonna spend tonight trying to extract some Water Release techniques."
Black Ape nodded. No questions.
Yako had taken out an entire Mist squad by himself—an exceptional feat for a chūnin.
Strong shinobi earned certain privileges.
Interrogating a Mist-nin? Totally normal in Anbu. Maybe he'd get more intel than just a jutsu.
Konoha shinobi often learned techniques from captured enemies—it was one of their primary sources of new ninjutsu.
It took him four hours, but Yako made the Mist-nin talk—in exchange for a quicker death.
He obtained Water Release: Water Formation Wall.
Mastering just one water technique was enough to start countering Konoha's endless stream of Fire-style users.
