Chapter 159: CHAPTER 159
Listening to the Uchiha beside him, Tobirama Senju couldn't help but twitch his lips. It was the first time he'd been called evil by an Uchiha — a bitter irony he couldn't ignore. The world seemed upside-down, and it felt as if their roles had reversed.
Especially coming from that Uchiha — someone he once considered both a companion and a friend.
"Ryūichi?! You're Ryūichi! Weren't you killed during the Third Great Ninja War? Why are you here?!"
The outburst came from a startled shinobi who had just removed the mask of a downed Root operative. His hand trembled as he pointed to the man on the ground, who struggled weakly without uttering a word.
"Lord Hokage," the ninja continued, his voice shaking, "this man... he was my teammate. I saw him fall on the battlefield. I brought his body back myself and buried him in the memorial cemetery. How is he alive?"
A cold silence fell over the group. Even seasoned shinobi felt a chill crawl up their spines. This went beyond any jutsu they'd ever seen — something forbidden was at work.
Tobirama remained quiet. He understood exactly what was happening. It was Edo Tensei — his own technique, twisted and misused.
Danzō.
Tobirama sighed deeply. This was exactly why he never named Danzō as Hokage. Had he succeeded Hiruzen, Konoha would likely have become a militarized shell of its former self.
Minato Namikaze, standing nearby, also said nothing. He knew Edo Tensei well enough — Orochimaru had used it before. But to admit that Danzō had revived fallen comrades and turned them into puppets for Root...
How could he explain that to his people?
Heroes — Konoha shinobi who gave their lives for peace — reduced to tools. Their minds stripped away, their bodies reanimated to serve the very village they died protecting.
Minato clenched his fists. He could not allow this to continue.
"Everyone, listen carefully," he declared, voice hardening. "This is an emergency order: locate and apprehend all Root operatives. Use any means necessary. If they resist, kill them. If they cannot be killed, seal them. Bring sealing teams immediately."
As he finished speaking, Minato raised his hand and threw a kunai — striking down the reanimated Aburame Ryūma.
The body collapsed, lifeless. All around them, other reanimated shinobi began falling — their jutsu unraveling with Ryūma's death. Their corpses returned to their original, sacrificed forms.
A medic-nin stepped forward to examine the remains. "Lord Hokage, these match records of confirmed deceased shinobi."
"Do it," Minato said grimly.
With that command, the combined forces of the Anbu, the Konoha Military Police Force, and the Intelligence Division moved to eliminate all remaining Root operatives within the village.
Within hours, the halls of Root Headquarters were nearly empty — save for a few figures, including the trembling elder, Mitokado Homura.
Minato approached him with a cold expression. "Elder Homura… you've disgraced the village."
He didn't include himself among those betrayed — he'd never trusted the elders to begin with. All he'd hoped was that they would interfere less.
But this… this exceeded any measure of political manipulation.
"Aoba," Minato said quietly, turning to his ally, Kawaki Aoba, "thank you. For the village — and for me."
Aoba waved dismissively, not bothering to turn around. He gave the impression of nonchalance, but inwardly, he was brooding.
Minato... why are you always so sincere?
Using his enhanced sensory perception — a unique blend of chakra sensing and observational prowess similar to Observation Haki — Aoba had already mapped Root's entire network. He could've ended it alone. But he didn't.
Instead, he let the official forces act. Only when necessary did he step in — a black chakra rod piercing through a rogue Root ninja when things grew dire.
Minato had made the right call. Cooperation among departments was essential — especially when even Uchiha were affected.
Under joint command and Aoba's intelligence, the Root was dismantled at terrifying speed. Of the thousand members registered, only a few dozen were still truly alive. The rest were controlled corpses or brainwashed shells.
During the sweep, several shinobi once again witnessed their fallen comrades turned into weapons. It weighed heavily on them.
For some Uchiha, the trauma triggered awakenings: Sharingan evolved — single tomoe to double, and double to triple — all within moments of witnessing their kin as reanimated husks.
Even Tobirama Senju, reborn through Edo Tensei himself, felt a strange stir within his chakra network — a pulse of dormant power reawakening.
To think the next generation would show such strength... Konoha may still endure.
After the purge, Aoba and Tobirama joined the others at Homura's residence. By the time they arrived, nearly all clan heads were present — save for the Hyūga. But technically, Kawaki Aoba could speak on their behalf.
"Lord Hokage," one clan head said angrily, "Danzō has gone too far. We demand accountability!"
Minato raised his hand, silencing the uproar.
"Rest assured, Shimura Danzō will be brought to justice. As Hokage, I cannot — and will not — forgive what he's done to our comrades."
He continued, voice unwavering: "The Anbu, Uchiha Police Force, and our enforcement units are handling the rest. Danzō is currently outside the village, but I swear this to you — neither I nor the village will protect him. He will face judgment."
Minato's words rang with resolve — not as a mere leader, but as a shinobi burdened by his duty to protect all of Konoha.
He also felt a deep sense of guilt toward the heads of the various clans. Although Danzo had operated from the shadows for years, the scandal had erupted during his term as Hokage.
Regardless, as the Hokage, he bore the ultimate responsibility.
Outside the building, Kawaki Aoba, who had just arrived, raised his voice:
"The Hokage is right—Danzo was a tumor within the village! No matter where he runs, we will hunt him down!
I personally guarantee that within a week, I will capture that old traitor and see to it that he is executed publicly."
Beside him, Senju Tobirama glanced at Aoba thoughtfully.
Ever since he was resurrected via the Impure World Reincarnation, he had sensed that the location was likely somewhere in the Land of Rain. Whether Danzo remained there now was unknown. The man had fallen too early in the confrontation, and not all intelligence had been gathered.
Tobirama harbored deep suspicions about Kawaki Aoba—particularly his possible connection to the man with the Rinnegan—but he lacked concrete evidence.
Watching Aoba boast so confidently, Tobirama wouldn't be surprised if Danzo was already in his hands.
This time, while the analysis had been flawed, the conclusion was surprisingly accurate.
He wondered what Aoba would think if he knew Tobirama's inner thoughts.
The clan heads said nothing after hearing Kawaki Aoba speak.
They had no doubts about his ability. Being targeted by him was a nightmare; becoming his ally was a different matter entirely.
From his place in the corner, Tobirama silently acknowledged the weight this young man carried in Konoha.
Not the Hokage—but someone greater.
"Then everything is entrusted to you, Aoba," said Namikaze Minato, the Fourth Hokage.
Aoba nodded but raised a point:
"I will take full responsibility for capturing Danzo, but what about his accomplices? Shouldn't they be dealt with too?"
The target of this implication was clear.
Mitokado Homura.
If time could be turned back, Homura would never have considered contacting Root, let alone scheming against Kawaki Aoba.
But now, it was too late. Regardless of how deeply he had cooperated with Danzo, the evidence discovered in his estate would seal his fate.
Continuing to serve as an elder was out of the question—whether he would even survive was uncertain.
Minato's voice echoed across the room as he passed sentence:
"Former Hokage Advisor Mitokado Homura is charged with conspiring with the rogue shinobi Shimura Danzo, providing him with sensitive information and attempting to obstruct the investigation. His actions are heinous. In the name of the Hokage, I hereby strip him of his title and order his imprisonment in Konoha's prison.
He will face further punishment once a full investigation into his crimes is completed."
Quite the declaration—Minato had even labeled Danzo a rogue ninja.
Still, some felt the punishment was too light. But it was temporary—for now. If Aoba so desired, more charges could still be brought against him.
Let it be said that this was giving Minato some face.
Soon after, Anbu escorted Homura into the depths of the Konoha prison.
The news reached Hiruzen Sarutobi within hours.
Standing in the courtyard of the Sarutobi estate, Hiruzen stared at an aging tree whose leaves were beginning to wither.
"Homura... why did you go this far?" he muttered, sighing heavily.
"At least Koharu chose the wise path."
What he didn't say aloud was that he, too, had chosen that path.
Unlike Koharu, who had no choice but to step back, Hiruzen had the strength—but not the will. Part of it was concern for the village, but the deeper truth was simpler:
He was afraid.
This man, who had held the title of Hokage for decades, had no confidence in facing Kawaki Aoba.
At least now, he could retreat with some dignity—preserving the reputation he'd built.
To oppose Aoba might mean destruction, both literal and symbolic. Whether Hiruzen could win was one thing—but whether Aoba would tolerate such defiance was another.
As Hiruzen gazed at the sky, Kawaki Aoba had already descended into the underground chamber where Danzo was held.
"Elder Danzo, I've got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?" Aoba asked, standing just outside the cell, casually watching the bound man.
Danzo didn't respond. He didn't even look up.
"Tch. Boring. Fine—I'll just tell you. You'll be seeing daylight again in about a week... but it'll probably be your last time."
At this, Danzo finally glanced up, his expression darkening.
Clearly, he still harbored hopes, still had plans—but in this cell, stripped of power, even his schemes meant nothing.
He could only wait—for judgment.
Shimura Danzo: You Uchiha devil...
But he said nothing aloud. And Kawaki Aoba, bored with the silence, turned and left.
