Chapter 73: Chapter 73: I Was Too Arrogant
Clang!
Boom!
At last, the towering, seemingly indestructible gate before Neji collapsed with a deafening crash. Debris scattered, smoke surged, and thick mist curled through the air. He had finally opened a path into the heart of the Foundation.
What lay beyond was shrouded in a ghostly green glow eerie and foreboding, even more chilling than what lay outside. A single glance into the space was enough to make the scalp prickle and goosebumps rise. It was desolate, cold, and suffused with a sinister atmosphere.
Inside, catwalks crisscrossed in chaotic patterns, forming a tangled labyrinth. Without guidance, even the most skilled ninja could easily lose their way. But that wasn't surprising. After all, Danzo had too many secrets to hide. Without a system of protection like this, his sins would've been exposed long ago.
Neji strode forward decisively. The area was deathly silent. It felt as though he were the only living soul in that vast, mechanical void. The air was cold and metallic, but he knew better than to be deceived by appearances.
"I never imagined so many of you would be here to welcome me. I'm truly flattered," Neji said slowly, his gaze sweeping methodically across his surroundings.
No one replied.
"Heh." He chuckled coldly. "Did you all forget what clan I belong to? I'm a Hyūga."
Suddenly, Neji activated his Byakugan. Veins bulged around his temples as his vision pierced through every hidden corner. Nothing could escape his sight.
"The Hyūga's Byakugan... The Uchiha's Sharingan... Annoying powers, both of them," a voice echoed behind him. "But you should remember, the Uchiha are already extinct."
Neji's lips curled into a smirk. "So you've finally decided to show yourself."
Without warning, masked Foundation shinobi emerged around him, silent and deadly. Each stared intently at Neji, bloodlust radiating from their eyes. One command, and they would strike to kill.
"You trespassed into the Foundation. You killed two of our guards. Hyūga Neji, genius or not, you won't leave here alive," said Yamanaka Fū coldly.
He and Aburame Torune had witnessed Neji confront Danzo earlier, so they were well aware of his capabilities. For someone who could incapacitate a squad of Foundation shinobi in the blink of an eye, Neji's strength defied his age. Even they had to stay alert.
"Whether I walk out or not isn't for you to decide," Neji replied. "But I'm pretty sure you're the ones who won't be leaving."
In a flash, Neji launched forward, appearing directly in front of Yamanaka Fū. Chakra surged in his hand, forming a blade of pure energy, which he swung down without hesitation.
Chakra Scalpel!
"What?!" Fū's pupils contracted. He instinctively tried to dodge but it was too late.
Slash!
Blood sprayed across the floor. A severed arm dropped heavily to the ground. And in Fū's eyes, the last thing he saw was the chilling, murderous glint in Neji's gaze.
"Fū!" Aburame Torune shouted, fury in his voice. "Hyūga Neji, how dare you!"
"You idiot," Neji muttered, sparing Torune a brief glance. "You think I'd come this far just to hold back?"
His hands moved swiftly. Two chakra-laced lion heads materialized at his fists, roaring with raw power. The deep blue chakra roiled with overwhelming force, isolating Neji and Fū from the rest.
"No one's going to save you. Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists!" Neji's voice was ice.
The two massive lion heads surged forward, devouring Fū in an instant.
"No-!" Fū cried out, but it was futile. The gap between them was simply too great.
Although Neji was ranked as an elite jōnin, that label only reflected his chakra volume and combat experience. In actual strength, he was already capable of fighting on par with Kage-level opponents. That was why he had dared come here to face Danzo.
Boom!
Fū's body shattered, limbs strewn across the floor. Blood pooled beneath him. In mere seconds, a top-tier operative of the Foundation had been eliminated, leaving the others stunned.
The Foundation preached detachment no past, no emotion, no future. But when staring death in the face, could anyone truly remain indifferent?
"Heh." Neji sneered. The Yamanaka Clan's Mind Body Switch Technique was troublesome in chaotic skirmishes. Even a moment of distraction could be fatal. That was why Fū had to go first.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Dozens of projectiles sliced through the air toward him. The Foundation had moved, wordless and efficient. Neji had declared his position with blood; there was no turning back.
Whether it was for Danzo or for their own survival, they knew this man could not be allowed to live.
"Pointless!" Neji spun rapidly, releasing a chakra dome that repelled every incoming weapon.
Rotation! A hemispherical shield enveloped him, deflecting all physical attacks.
"Rotation doesn't work against ninjutsu use elemental jutsu!" someone shouted, and a flurry of hand signs followed. Water surged into a dragon. Lightning crackled. Fire roared. Wind howled. Earth shattered.
Five different jutsu, five elemental forces, crashed down together in a storm of destruction. It looked like a reenactment of the battle between Hiruzen Sarutobi and Orochimaru.
But the Foundation lacked Sarutobi's might. And Neji... Neji had the power to rival Orochimaru.
Wood Clone Technique!
Neji's back twisted and warped into wooden textures, then split, producing two identical clones.
"Only two... I'm still not there yet." He frowned. Hashirama Senju could produce four clones even while maintaining a powerful barrier.
"But this will do."
Eight Trigrams: Mountain-Crushing Strike!
Together, the three Nejis unleashed a blinding flash of white energy that surged toward the incoming elemental barrage.
Crack!
To Neji's shock, his attack began to fracture. The white beams splintered and broke apart like shards of glass. They were completely overpowered.
"I was too arrogant..."
In that moment, clarity returned. His recent rapid growth had created an illusion of invincibility. But that was a lie a symptom of hubris. Only a few could withstand such a powerful onslaught. He wasn't one of them. Not yet.
"I need to slow down. After this battle, I'll use the next three years of relative peace to truly build my foundation."
And as that thought passed, a torrent of devastating jutsu rained down upon him.
