Chapter 70: Chapter 70: This Night, the Beginning of Change
Darkness fell. The deep of night cloaked the village in stillness, broken only by the chorus of cicadas outside. Inside a spacious room, a young boy lay on his bed, drenched in cold sweat.
A voice echoed relentlessly in his ears.
His expression twisted, contorted in fear and rage. His fingers dug tightly into the sheets, warping the fabric into a crumpled mess.
"My foolish little brother... you're too weak. Why are you so weak?"
"It's because your hatred isn't deep enough. You don't hate me enough."
"As you are now, you're not even worthy of being hunted by me. My foolish brother... come to kill me with hatred so deep you're willing to die for it."
"Then, I'll send you to meet Father and Mother..."
"No... No... Aaahhh!"
Sasuke jolted upright with a scream. His breath came in ragged gasps, eyes wide with terror, pupils unfocused.
"Hah... hah..."
"It was just a dream…" he whispered, the realization bringing a sliver of relief. He was still in his room.
"Damn it! Why? I've trained so hard, pushed myself to the edge again and again... Why can't I beat that guy?!" Sasuke clenched his fists so tightly his nails pierced the skin of his palms.
Ever since that day when he was effortlessly defeated these nightmares haunted him. He couldn't forget how his Chidori was broken as if it were nothing. The memory made his teeth grind with rage.
Even worse was the genjutsu that made him relive the massacre of the Uchiha Clan. That illusion alone had left him gasping for air, drowning in helplessness and fury. He wanted nothing more than to kill Itachi as soon as possible.
"The Sharingan... the Sharingan. Is this all I am?" Sasuke stared at the reflection of his own eyes in the mirror, the crimson glow of the Sharingan staring back at him. His anger surged. With a sharp motion, he crushed a piece of the bed sheet in his hand.
"Am I really this weak? If this goes on... can I even get my revenge?" His voice trembled, full of frustration and unwillingness.
Just the residual pressure from Itachi was enough to force his Sharingan to awaken. Was he really that fragile?
But Sasuke didn't know that at this very moment, someone was watching from the rooftop above.
Neji, his pale eyes glowing faintly, listened to the fearful growl drifting from inside the room and smiled subtly.
"Sasuke, go on. I've been waiting for the moment you'd betray the village."
Not long after, Sasuke left the room. To Neji's surprise, he exited through the window. It seemed to be a quirk among all ninja ignoring doors in favor of dramatic window escapes.
Wandering the empty streets, Sasuke walked without direction, uncertain of where to go or what to do.
Above him, the night sky shimmered with stars, unusually bright. He walked alone beneath the starlight, as if some invisible thread had guided him, until he found himself standing once again in the Uchiha district.
After the massacre, the vast territory had become desolate. The higher-ups in Konoha never reclaimed the land, and it naturally became Sasuke's inheritance.
But Sasuke had no desire to return here. The memories were too painful. The emptiness, the silence, the oppressive gloom that clung to every corner it only deepened his sorrow and rage.
"Damn it!"
With a roar, Sasuke punched a nearby tree. Blood trickled down the bark, but he didn't feel pain. Only shame and frustration filled him.
It was the same back then. If only he had been stronger... if only he had the power to stop Itachi's slaughter, none of this tragedy would have happened.
"Damn it! It's all because of power... I need greater power!" he growled.
He had already been training desperately, yet when he thought about how easily Itachi had neutralized his Chidori as if it were no more than a twig he couldn't help but boil with frustration.
"Come out!"
Sasuke suddenly turned his head. His eyes blazed red, sharp and piercing. He stared into the shadows of the trees behind him.
"Heh... no wonder Lord Orochimaru has his eye on you. You've got some fight in you," came a mocking voice.
From behind the tree stepped four figures, each with a tube strapped to their backs three men and one woman. It was the Sound Four.
"You're Orochimaru's people?" Sasuke said coldly. "You've broken into Konoha without permission. Are you trying to start a war?"
"Come on, don't be like that. We came here just for you," said the strange one with six arms, grinning wickedly.
"For me? Tch. Get lost. I'm not in the mood to deal with anyone right now."
Sasuke's eyes narrowed. He didn't care who they were. His mind was too clouded with anger to waste time on them.
"This brat's got a sharp tongue," growled Sakon. "I'm gonna break both your arms so you understand how big the gap is between us."
"Easy, Sakon," Tayuya said. "Lord Orochimaru values this one. Don't kill him." Her tone was casual, showing not a shred of concern.
"You're underestimating me? You want to die?" Sasuke snapped.
Without warning, he charged forward. A surge of chakra gathered in his hand, forming a crackling burst of lightning.
"Chidori!"
The thunderous attack pierced through the air like a sharpened spear, emitting a harsh, buzzing screech. It carried with it a terrifying energy, as if it could slice through anything.
But Sasuke was still too weak.
Sakon slammed his hand into the ground. A Rashomon Gate burst up from the earth. Just one was enough to block Sasuke's Chidori.
Boom!
The deafening crash shook the ground. The impact rippled outward, but all Sasuke's strike could manage was a faint black scorch mark on the massive gate.
"Hah. Is that all you've got? I really don't get why Lord Orochimaru sees anything in trash like you," Sakon said with a sneer.
"What did you say?!"
Sasuke exploded with rage. He charged again, and this time, dark markings began to spread across his skin. His Sharingan gleamed a deeper red, and power surged through his body like a rising tide.
"This... this is the power I want. Die! Chidori!"
The second Chidori struck the Rashomon Gate, and this time, it punched clean through, blasting a hole straight through the barrier.
Still, it didn't reach Sakon.
"Impressive," Sakon said, slightly surprised.
"Hmph. It's too late to beg for mercy now," Sasuke growled.
"The power of Lord Orochimaru's Cursed Seal really is something..."
"What?! Damn it! Why?! Why won't anyone acknowledge me?! What do I even mean to people like you?!"
Sasuke roared, his voice breaking with fury. His crimson eyes glowed like molten blood, burning with a fire that refused to die.
"You'll pay for this!"
