Chapter 155: Chapter 153: Rebirth in the Underworld

Chapter 153: Rebirth in the Underworld

"This is the Yomi Reincarnation Jutsu. Here, death is the only outcome," one of the Root shinobi explained.

Baishi ignored the latter part of the explanation, repeating the name to himself: "Yomi Reincarnation..."

Hearing the term, Baishi finally understood how his Wood Clone had been destroyed and how he himself had been ensnared.

The Yomi Reincarnation Jutsu is a forbidden spacetime technique that sacrifices the life of its caster to forcibly separate a target's soul from their body. This leaves the physical body in a pseudo-death state, with only faint heartbeats and trace amounts of chakra locked in stasis, unable to circulate.

Without external intervention, the physical body will die shortly after, and the severed soul, left without an anchor, will fade into the Pure Land, becoming a true spirit of the dead.

For Wood Clones, which are chakra-constructed entities without actual souls, the jutsu instantly causes them to collapse. When the chakra returns to the caster, it carries the jutsu's effects, pulling Baishi's soul from his body.

"So that's how it happened..."

Baishi murmured, his mind turning to the origins of the technique.

In his memory, the only known practitioners of this jutsu were the Sound Four. But how had Danzo obtained it?

A name quickly surfaced in Baishi's mind: Orochimaru.

The more Baishi considered it, the more likely it seemed. Compared to living beings performing the technique, those revived by Edo Tensei would have significant advantages:

First, the sacrifice. Living casters would lose their lives, but Edo Tensei bodies, being undead, had no such concerns.

Second, the soul. The souls of living beings could be disturbed by external forces, but Edo Tensei resurrected individuals had their souls bound and controlled by the technique, making interference nearly impossible.

Finally, chakra. Edo Tensei bodies had infinite chakra, allowing them to sustain extended conflicts and wear down opponents.

It was plausible that Orochimaru developed the Yomi Reincarnation Jutsu specifically for use with Edo Tensei.

However, Baishi speculated that the technique might have been abandoned by Orochimaru later on. Despite its unique utility, the technique was impractical for him; he lacked a sufficient number of Edo Tensei bodies, and the jutsu required four casters. For someone like Orochimaru, it was easier to directly control his Edo Tensei units to eliminate targets rather than using such a complex method.

As for how Danzo had acquired it? Baishi wasn't surprised. Considering Danzo's Sharingan-arm—another of Orochimaru's creations—it made sense that this forbidden technique was also part of their exchange.

But this only solidified Baishi's realization that Danzo's actions were premeditated. The extensive preparation hinted at a deliberate plan.

Danzo was likely en route to Baishi's last known location at that very moment. While the space Baishi was trapped in was sturdy enough to ensure no escape, Danzo's paranoia meant that he would want to confirm Baishi's death personally.

"Fortunately, there's still a ten-kilometer gap between this place and where we fought. That's plenty of time."

With this thought, Baishi activated the Spirit Transformation Jutsu, an S-ranked technique designed to detach the user's soul and transform it into a spirit form.

The Yomi Reincarnation Jutsu had separated Baishi's soul from his body, leaving him in a dual physical-spiritual state. While this allowed him to access his full strength, including bloodline abilities, he didn't need that right now.

The moment his Spirit Transformation Jutsu activated, Baishi's body transitioned into a fully spiritual form, granting him mobility within this strange crimson space.

Seeing Baishi shift forms, the four Root shinobi instinctively prepared to attack. Yet before they could move, their bodies froze.

Baishi's spirit, a streak of white light, had already passed through their forms, implanting Spirit Seeds in their souls.

In the material world, the process would have required Baishi to invade their mental spaces and use their chakra as a bridge to plant the seeds. Here, however, their souls were unprotected, making the task effortless.

Moments later, the four Root shinobi regained mobility and knelt before Baishi.

"Master!" they said in unison.

Baishi nodded in satisfaction. "Can you break this barrier?"

"Yes," one replied. "As long as all four of us release the Yomi Reincarnation Jutsu, the barrier will dissipate."

Baishi pondered their words. He didn't immediately order the barrier's removal but instead began inspecting the surrounding space.

"I want to see if I can force this barrier open myself. If I can, it might be useful if I'm ever trapped again."

After a quick assessment, Baishi identified the barrier's weak point: its uppermost section.

"I see... No flaws in the horizontal or vertical planes, and the base is solid. That leaves the top..."

Positioning himself directly below the ceiling, Baishi released his Spirit Transformation Jutsu, returning to a physical-spiritual hybrid state.

He formed seals and unleashed Dust Release: Atomic Dismantling Jutsu, the most powerful technique in his arsenal.

If Naruto's Wind Release: Rasenshuriken could shatter barriers, there was no reason Dust Release couldn't.

This theory proved correct. As the white beam of Dust Release struck the barrier, cracks quickly spread across its surface.

With a sound like breaking glass, the barrier collapsed, allowing sunlight to filter through the gaps in the canopy.

Simultaneously, Baishi felt his connection to his body reestablish.

But something else caught his attention: a familiar, violent chakra emanating from his physical form.

"This... Nine-Tails?"

Alarmed, Baishi immediately reactivated his Spirit Transformation Jutsu. His soul became a streak of light, shooting back into his body like a comet.

Upon arrival, he saw his physical form enveloped in dark red chakra—the telltale sign of the Nine-Tails.

"That was close!" Baishi exhaled.

The Yomi Reincarnation Jutsu had drawn out most of his chakra, leaving only a trace in his physical form. The Nine-Tails had tried to exploit this opportunity to break free from its seal and seize control.

Fortunately, the Nine-Tails' own chakra reserves were equally low due to Baishi's constant absorption. Combined with the strength of the seal, the beast had failed.

As if sensing Baishi's return, the Nine-Tails manifested within the seal, snarling furiously.

Baishi smirked. "Now, now, Kurama. Don't be so grumpy."

The fox growled louder, thrashing against the barriers of its cage, but Baishi paid it no mind. With a simple motion, his soul returned to his body, the Nine-Tails' chakra dissipated, and the seal stabilized once more.
