Naruto: Chill of Eternity

Chapter 21: Infiltration, Gone Wrong?

t had been a week since Nyx and Konan had captured the Six-Tails, and although she should have been reveling in the aftermath of their success, a restless energy coursed through her veins. The Akatsuki had given her explicit instructions to stay home and rest, but the confinement felt suffocating.

In her hands, she held a newspaper that featured her name prominently across the front page, the stark black ink contrasting with the soft white paper. The headline read:

"Former Konoha Shinobi Gone Rogue, Joining the Akatsuki: Nyx Hyōketsu"

As she scanned the article, her icy blue eyes narrowed at the words that followed, detailing her past and present.

"Known as the Ice Phantom due to her mastery over ice and her ability to leave no trace, like a chilling apparition. Be cautious—she was once a notorious serial killer. An extremely skilled shinobi at the age of 13, with a bounty of five million ryo."

A smirk tugged at the corners of her lips as she read about herself. "A bounty of five million ryo..." she muttered, rolling the newspaper back into a cylinder and tapping it against her palm. Her thoughts drifted momentarily, reflecting on her past—the villages she had decimated in her quest for revenge. She felt a strange mix of pride and detachment. "It's not too bad," she mused, savoring the fleeting thrill of her notoriety. She had expected her bounty to be higher given the terror she had instilled in the hearts of so many.

Suddenly, the sound of a knock at her door jolted her from her thoughts. The gentle rapping seemed incongruous in the quiet of her room, but Nyx's instincts were sharp. She rose fluidly from her seat, her posture instinctively relaxed but ready for any threat. As she approached the door, she caught sight of a thin slip of paper sliding beneath it.

With a flick of her wrist, she opened the door cautiously, peering into the dimly lit corridor outside. It was empty. She bent down and picked up the note, her curiosity piqued. The paper was unmarked and folded neatly. As she unfolded it, she scanned the message with growing intrigue.

Nyx Hyōketsu, it began, the ink bold and authoritative.

You are to infiltrate the Sand Village and gather intelligence, as well as evaluate the Sand's response to Akatsuki activities. Leave as soon as possible. You will be alone on this mission. What you wear does not matter, but ensure you do not draw attention to yourself.

The gravity of the mission settled upon her, igniting a thrill within her chest. The Sand Village was known for its formidable ninja and complex politics, and she would have to tread carefully. As she finished reading, a determined glint sparked in her icy blue eyes.

Gather intelligence? Evaluate their response?

Nyx sighed, the weight of anticipation settling in her chest as she slipped into her Akatsuki clothing. The familiar dark fabric clung to her frame, offering both comfort and a sense of purpose. Adjusting her cloak, she felt the fabric brush against her skin like a second layer, reinforcing her identity as a member of the notorious organization.

As she fastened the red cloud insignia at her waist, she steeled her resolve. A mission is a mission, she reminded herself, her mind focused on the tasks ahead. With a final glance in the mirror, she grabbed her mask—a black cloth that would shield her face from the harsh desert winds—before stepping out into the unforgiving light of day.

The journey to the Sand Village would be long and arduous, but Nyx thrived in challenges. As she ventured into the vast expanse of the desert, her senses heightened. The heat radiated from the sun overhead, yet her icy demeanor allowed her to remain relatively unaffected.

With each step, a long trail of frost followed her, the chill emanating from her very being leaving delicate crystals in the sand. The desert landscape appeared stark and lifeless, but Nyx felt alive in this isolation, each footfall an assertion of her will against the world around her.

The mask covered her face, filtering the biting grains of sand that whipped through the air like tiny daggers. The sun bore down relentlessly, but as she continued her trek, she maintained her focus on the task at hand.

After what felt like hours of traversing the undulating dunes, Nyx's keen eyes finally caught a glimpse of her destination. In the distance, the Sand Village emerged from the horizon like a mirage, its structures silhouetted against the brilliant sky. The buildings were made of sunbaked clay and stone, their earthy tones a stark contrast to the brilliant blue overhead.

As she drew closer, she began to plan her approach. Nyx was aware of the Sand Village's reputation for formidable shinobi and intricate defenses. The village would be bustling with activity, and she needed to blend in while remaining vigilant. Her heart raced with excitement as she considered the possibilities that lay ahead.

Finding a spot behind a cluster of rocks to gather her thoughts, Nyx studied the village's entrance. She would need to be careful, utilizing her cunning and agility to slip past any guards and gather the intelligence required. With the wind howling around her and the weight of her mission pressing on her shoulders, she felt the familiar thrill of anticipation—this was what she lived for.

Nyx took a deep breath, feeling the cold air within her mask mix with the heat of the desert. It's time to see what secrets the Sand Village holds, she thought.

The village was eerily quiet, an unsettling stillness hanging in the air. Few people wandered the streets, and those who did moved with a palpable caution. Nyx couldn't help but speculate about the recent news that had spread like wildfire—rumors of a rogue shinobi and the Akatsuki's rising influence seemed to have cast a shadow over the Sand Village.

Perhaps that's why the streets are so empty, she thought, her icy blue eyes scanning her surroundings.

As she made her way toward the center of the village, where the main building of investigation stood, Nyx slipped through narrow alleyways, her footsteps nearly silent on the ground. She was a master of stealth, embodying the very essence of her nickname, Ice Phantom. Every movement she made was fluid and deliberate, as if she were a ghost gliding through the shadows.

With each cautious step, she blended seamlessly into her surroundings, the cold aura around her warding off any hint of warmth or life. The buildings around her loomed high, their walls rough and sunbaked, casting long shadows that offered her cover. Nyx utilized these darkened corners to her advantage, darting between structures with the grace of a phantom, unseen and unfelt.

She could feel the tension in the air, a mix of fear and uncertainty. Nyx paused momentarily, listening intently to the distant sounds of the village. The faint rustle of leaves and the occasional creak of wooden doors were the only indicators of life. She tightened her grip on the hilt of her short blade, ready for any unexpected encounters.

Nyx crouched behind a pillar, her breath steady as she observed the scene before her. Just inside the main door of the building, a guard engaged in conversation with a girl who immediately caught her attention. The girl had long, spiky blonde hair styled in a high ponytail, with bangs that framed her face. Her striking emerald green eyes radiated confidence and determination. She wore a sleeveless dark blue top that accentuated her athletic build, paired with a flowing light blue skirt that allowed for ease of movement. Leaning casually against her large fan, she exuded an air of strength that resonated in the stillness of the moment.

"So, what did you find?" the girl asked, her voice steady and assertive, echoing slightly in the still air of the village.

The guard shifted uncomfortably, glancing around as if the very walls might overhear their conversation. "No, Lady Temari. Everything seems to be in order. There's nothing out of the ordinary." His tone was respectful, but a hint of unease laced his words, as if he felt the weight of her scrutiny.

Temari's emerald green eyes narrowed slightly, her expression unyielding. "Are you sure? Given the recent activities of the Akatsuki, we can't afford to be complacent. Every detail matters. You must remain vigilant." She leaned against her large fan, the weapon towering over her, its presence a testament to her power and status as a kunoichi.

The guard nodded quickly, feeling the pressure of her gaze. "I understand, but I assure you, no unusual chakra signatures or suspicious activities have been reported in the vicinity. Perhaps... perhaps the rumors are unfounded?"

Temari pushed herself off the fan, straightening up. "Rumors can often hide the truth, and truth can be more dangerous than any rumor. Keep your eyes open. If something does happen, I want to be the first to know." Her tone was firm, leaving no room for doubt.

The guard nodded again, her determination igniting a sense of urgency within him. "Understood, Lady Temari. I will make sure to keep watch."

As their conversation concluded, Nyx watched as the guard turned and walked away, her confidence evident in every step. The girl referred to as Lady Temari, began heading back inside the main building.

Nyx's heart raced, this was her opportunity to infiltrate the building. Timing her movements perfectly, she slipped through the doors just before they closed, her presence as silent as a whisper in the wind. Inside, the dimly lit corridor stretched out before her, lined with sturdy wooden doors and the faint echo of footsteps in the distance. She took a moment to gather herself, scanning her surroundings for any signs of movement or potential threats.

Quietly, Nyx ascended the stairs, her footfalls silent against the cool stone. She activated her Kōrimeigan, allowing her to sense chakra signatures within the building. Among the myriad of faint auras, one stood out—a powerful chakra that pulsed with intensity, unlike the others. Her curiosity piqued, Nyx stealthily followed the trail, making sure to remain concealed in the shadows.

As she approached the door to a large meeting room, hushed voices floated through the air, their tones filled with urgency. Nyx pressed her back against the wall, straining to listen, her heart pounding with anticipation.

Inside the room, several high-ranking members of the Sand Village gathered around a polished table, each wearing expressions of concern. The flickering light of lanterns cast shadows on their stern faces as they discussed the looming threat of the Akatsuki.

"Reports indicate that they are gaining power," one man said, his voice steady yet tense. He was clad in formal attire, his dark hair slicked back neatly. "If we do not act soon, the Akatsuki will see the Sand Village as an easy target."

A woman with sharp features leaned forward, her eyes glinting with determination. "We cannot afford to underestimate them. They have already captured two tailed beasts. The longer we wait, the more dangerous they become. We must enhance our defenses."

"Defenses alone won't be enough," another voice chimed in, this one belonging to a grizzled warrior with a scar running across his cheek. "We need to form alliances with the other villages. If we are to confront the Akatsuki, we must stand united. It's the only way we can hope to counter their threat."

Nyx listened intently, absorbing every detail. She could sense the tension in the room—fear masked by resolve. The Sand Village's leaders were acutely aware of their precarious situation and were strategizing to face an enemy that had proven itself ruthless.

"But what if one of our own is already compromised?" a voice questioned, and Nyx's interest was further piqued. "What if they've already infiltrated our ranks?"

The room fell silent, the implication hanging heavy in the air. Nyx felt a flicker of satisfaction at their concern. They had every reason to fear her, the Ice Phantom, who was not only capable but also unrepentant about her past.

"Enough of this indecision!" Lady Temari's voice broke through the tension, strong and unwavering. She stepped forward, her emerald eyes ablaze with determination. "We must act swiftly and decisively. If we let fear dictate our actions, we are already defeated. I propose a preemptive strike to show them that the Sand Village will not cower."

The others murmured in agreement, some nodding while others exchanged glances of uncertainty. Nyx's lips curled into a faint smile. Temari's confidence was refreshing, she admired that kind of strength.

Quietly, Nyx slipped away, mentally preparing to bring back the critical information to the Akatsuki. As she neared the outskirts of the village, a familiar voice cut through the silence, startling her.

"Where do you think you're going, Akatsuki member?"
