Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Seizing Another Mangekyo
The orange-red Susanoo's battle helm was sliced apart, and the Tengu armor shattered completely.
The tide had turned…
Itachi, his face haggard, dismissed his Susanoo. He stood in place, slowly raising his head to gaze at the full-bodied, dark-red Susanoo crashing heavily down in front of him.
The sonic boom was deafening.
The moment the complete Susanoo's armored boots hit the ground, the shockwave rippled outward, violently disturbing the air.
Itachi's short hair whipped backward.
His robes billowed.
Stones scattered.
Obito's expression turned grim. He raised his right hand and pressed tightly against his mask. As space twisted around him, he vanished alone into the Kamui dimension once again.
The dark-red demon god stood before Itachi.
Only when the storm winds died down…
A rhombus-shaped blood-red jewel dropped swiftly from the battle helm to the ground.
Uchiha Yu's expression remained indifferent as he descended the steps, passing through the dark-red energy field, emerging from the complete Susanoo and walking straight toward Itachi.
The massive demon-like Susanoo behind him became a dramatic backdrop to Yu's lone figure.
After Yu departed from it,
The Susanoo, burning with the hellfire, knelt on one knee, its chakra sword embedded into the ground like a knight awaiting its master's return.
Caw—Caw—Caw—
Suddenly, as Itachi locked eyes with Yu approaching him, his Mangekyō spun, and countless crows appeared around him, scattering in all directions.
Black feathers rained to the ground.
Yu glanced at the wildly flying flock of crows. Behind him, the knight-like massive Susanoo's eyes glowed a deep red, casting its gaze upon them.
Time seemed to freeze in the air.
The crows' wings, mid-flap, suddenly stiffened—suspended in the rain—and one by one they dropped to the muddy earth.
One particularly large raven circled once in the sky, then flew toward Yu's shoulder, extending its left eye toward him.
Yu did not meet its gaze. Instead, he reached out and plucked the terrified eye from the bird's socket, causing blood to flow.
The crow, controlled by the Yasakani, let out a pained cry as the removed eye revealed the unique pattern of the Kotoamatsukami Mangekyō.
Flap—
The crow flailed briefly, its chakra surging wildly, then exploded into a burst of blood mist, black feathers drifting down.
It was only then that a trace of emotion flickered across Itachi's face.
Yu flipped his right hand, producing a test tube specially used to preserve the Kotoamatsukami Mangekyō. He placed the freshly taken left eye into it.
Inside the test tube were both of Shisui's eyes—his right eye taken from Danzo, and now his left, just retrieved from Itachi.
The twin Kotoamatsukami Mangekyō floated in the solution, gently rising and falling. Yu glanced at them briefly, then stored the tube in his spatial storage.
Space trembled.
The tube vanished.
"You wanted to confuse me with the crows—let one of them carry Shisui's left eye away. But I once possessed the Kotoamatsukami Mangekyō myself; I can distinguish its Yin Release chakra signature."
Yu spoke calmly as he summoned the Dark Moon blade in his right hand, infusing it with Wind Release chakra.
Buzz—
The pitch-black blade seemed to devour the very space it occupied, distorting the air with high-frequency vibrations.
With that, Yu's figure flashed like lightning—swift as a flickering phantom—and in an instant appeared before Itachi. The Dark Moon pierced through Itachi's right shoulder, forcing him to stagger and fall helplessly to the ground.
Thud—
Mud splashed.
Yu stabbed the black blade into the ground, pinning Itachi firmly in place. Itachi coughed up blood, utterly drained of power. His Mangekyō faded as his chakra ran dry.
His body screamed with pain on a cellular level. His vision blurred, distorted further by the pouring rain—he could no longer clearly see Yu, who stood over him.
Itachi hadn't even gotten the chance to use Tsukuyomi.
From the very beginning, Yu had preemptively engraved the Yasakani's imprint on his own mind.
If Itachi were to use Shisui's left eye to alter Yu's mental will—or draw him into the Tsukuyomi world—the imprint would activate, restoring Yu's mental state and reinforcing his unwavering resolve:
To kill Itachi.
And to seize his Mangekyō.
Both were spiritual manipulation-type Mangekyō, but their ocular powers were no longer on the same level.
What a pity—Itachi didn't have the time to switch eyes. If he tried to replace it with Shisui's Kotoamatsukami, his Susanoo would immediately collapse. And once Susanoo was deactivated, his chakra likely wouldn't be enough to activate Kotoamatsukami anyway.
Before overwhelming power—
Itachi was powerless.
"When you lose your Mangekyō Sharingan, how do you think Konoha—the village you love so much—will treat you? How will Hiruzen Sarutobi treat you? Have you ever thought about that?"
Yu extended his right hand. His fingers moved toward Itachi's forehead, and in Itachi's blurred vision, the hand shifted left—then reached straight for his left eye.
Blood flowed from his eye socket.
Yu's movements were skilled and practiced. After removing the Tsukuyomi eye, his fingers moved right and, with the same precision, plucked out the Amaterasu Mangekyō as well.
Itachi's eyes shut tight. His teeth cracked under the strain. Searing pain radiated from the hollowed sockets, and as agony surged through every cell of his body, he nearly lost consciousness.
"You knew Danzo stole Shisui's right eye… and yet you still chose to draw your blade against someone weaker.
Retrieving Shisui's eye—is that so difficult for you? A so-called rare genius of the Uchiha clan?
A ninja who thinks like a Hokage? An unsung hero who supports the light from within the darkness? Heh…"
Yu spoke calmly.
Then—
He flipped his palm over. Space trembled once more as he summoned a test tube. He placed both of Itachi's Mangekyō eyes into it and stored the tube into his spatial inventory.
Yu crouched beside Itachi, his gaze calm. Looking directly at the bloodied and barely breathing Itachi, he asked:
"Why don't you explain it to me—what is a village? What is a clan? What is a shinobi?"
Itachi remained silent.
Splurt—
Yu drew the Dark Moon blade from Itachi's right shoulder and stabbed it into his left clavicle. Blood gushed, quickly diluted by the falling rain.
"Ugh—ahhh!!"
Itachi groaned in agony, grinding his teeth in silence. The blade twisted, then moved from his left shoulder to his right thigh, carving a dozen gaping holes.
Yu moved like a machine—strike after strike.
Each blow avoided vital organs.
Each one maximized pain.
"AAHH—!"
Itachi's face twisted in torment. After a final cry, he seemed unwilling to die so helplessly. Trembling, he spoke, a last act of defiance:
"A village… is a bridge connecting clan to clan… A shinobi exists to protect the bonds between villagers and among clans…"
Yu nodded slightly, then asked:
"And what about your clan? The people who gave birth to you, raised you, nurtured you?"
Itachi fell silent again. After a long pause, he replied:
"Their… judgment…"
Yu cut him off, his voice flat:
"So you killed your parents—the ones who bore and raised you through hardship. You slaughtered your kin—those who shared your bloodline, sheltered you, provided you with resources.
You should've known—
Before they took action, most of them still trusted you, the one assigned to monitor them."
Itachi's face contorted in grief. Clenching his teeth, he growled:
"You should understand—they would've failed. They were doomed to fail. When that happened, the village would've fallen even faster!"
"Heh… Weakness and ignorance aren't the obstacles to survival. Arrogance is. And your arrogance is no different from that of your clan."
Yu reached out and gripped Itachi's face, turning it toward him, saying coldly:
"Your greatest mistake… was never even giving them a chance to set aside pride and talk."
"Talk…" Itachi muttered, "Arrogance… is the true… obstacle to survival…"
In that instant, it was as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over his soul—he suddenly understood something, yet at the same time, it felt vague and unreal.
"A village is a bridge connecting clans; your understanding of the village—very poetic.
But when a village lacks the strength to resolve conflict with a clan, and instead bands together with other clans to suppress, exile, and betray that one clan—simply because they wield the power of authority—
That kind of Konoha…
Is it really a bridge?"
Yu finished speaking and let out a long sigh.
"Konoha is sick. And you've willingly gone along with them, becoming part of the cancer.
You need to understand one thing—without the Uchiha's strength, you, Uchiha Itachi, are nothing in the shinobi world."
