Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Pathetic
Gekkou Hayate was continuously signaling Shiranui Genma with his eyes.
Namiashi Raidou wore a troubled expression, while Yamashiro Aoba hid his discomfort behind his sunglasses.
"Little kid…"
Genma looked at Tenten, who was sitting across from Kanzuki, feeling somewhat troubled. He certainly couldn't involve a small girl in this situation.
The dango they had ordered gradually arrived and was set upon the table, quite a feast, yet no one dared to touch it.
Outside, the night was thick, and pedestrians occasionally passed by the shop. The market's noise contrasted sharply with the tranquility inside the small shop.
Eventually, Tenten could no longer eat and placed her unfinished dango back on the plate. After taking a sip of her drink, she sighed contentedly.
"Are you full?" Kanzuki asked.
Tenten nodded, glancing at the remaining skewers on the plate with a conflicted expression.
"Oboro, you really aren't going to eat?" she looked at him.
"You can take it to go."
"But if my mom finds out, she'll scold me…" Tenten murmured, lost in thought.
"Just put it in your fridge; I'll eat it tomorrow."
Kanzuki was helpless but didn't refuse.
"Boss, we're ready to settle up."
After Kanzuki finished paying, Tenten eagerly walked out of the shop, holding the takeout bag. As Kanzuki stood up, he caught a glance at the four figures by the table who were still sipping tea, their dango untouched.
"Is this how it ends?"
As they exited the shop, Hayate asked.
"What else could we do? We can't act in front of a child," Raidou replied helplessly.
"That's true; we aren't bullies," Aoba agreed.
Only then did Genma pick up a skewer of dango and take a bite.
"Let's follow them."
On the road back, Tenten gleefully walked ahead after enjoying her meal, holding onto the bag of food, occasionally bouncing on her feet, stepping on manhole covers and kicking at the litter by the roadside.
"Oboro."
She suddenly turned around, hands clasped behind her back, a big smile on her face.
"If tomorrow is the end of the world, who would you want to spend it with?"
Kanzuki paused, pulled from his wandering thoughts by her question.
"What?"
"I mean, if tomorrow is the end of the world, who would you want to spend your last day with?" Tenten repeated.
"What kind of question is that?" Kanzuki replied dismissively.
"The end of the world isn't going to happen."
"Why not?!" Tenten insisted, her tone firm. "Like, the moon could fall down, or a big bad guy might show up to destroy the world…"
"I wouldn't let the moon fall, and if a big bad guy tried to destroy the world, I could take him down," Kanzuki responded.
Tenten's cheeks puffed out in frustration.
"I'm asking you a question, just answer it!" she shouted.
"Then why are you asking it?" Kanzuki replied, amused by the little girl's stubbornness.
"Today our teacher asked us this and told us to write down the names of people we'd want to spend our last day with."
This scenario and question felt somewhat familiar to Kanzuki...
He thought for a moment, focusing on Tenten with suspicion. Had the teachers coordinated this?
"What did you write down?"
"Why do you care what I wrote? I was asking you!" Tenten insisted, clearly annoyed.
"Hurry up and answer!"
"What am I answering?" he asked, genuinely baffled.
"Answer the question I asked you!" Tenten became increasingly exasperated.
Kanzuki raised an eyebrow, "Is the answer really that important?"
"Grr, fine, whether you want to answer or not, it's up to you!" Tenten scowled, turning to walk away.
But not long after, she turned back and handed him the bag.
"Here, put it in your fridge."
Kanzuki gave her a strange look, amused by her still angry demeanor. He suddenly reached out, placing his hand on her head.
"If tomorrow is the end of the world…"
Tenten froze, feeling the warmth on her head and not bothering to push his hand away.
"On my last day, I hope…"
Her head instinctively lowered as she gripped the bag tightly, her eyes downcast.
"...to be alone."
"..."
The sound of laughter seemed to echo in her ears. Tenten lifted her head and found Kanzuki wearing a faint smirk.
Her expression shifted from shock to embarrassment and finally to a blank face.
That damned bastard...
She clenched her fists, feeling unable to strike him, but anger surged within her, prompting her foot to viciously kick towards Kanzuki's knee.
Kanzuki simply sidestepped slightly, evading her kick while accepting the food bag.
Tenten took a deep breath and turned to leave.
"Hey, if it's the end of the world tomorrow, you're just going to abandon me?"
"Good riddance!"
Tenten shouted back at him while walking further away.
Kanzuki glanced down at the bag in his hand, standing alone in the middle of the street with people flowing around him.
He suppressed his expression, knowing his home was not far away but instead chose to head elsewhere.
The night sky was dotted with stars, and the village below was peaceful and quiet.
Moving away from the bustling market, he approached the outskirts of Konoha, where the forest lay ahead—an area rarely visited.
Kanzuki stopped in the open space there, left hand in his pants pocket, and the right hand holding the food bag.
After a while, the evening breeze blew repeatedly.
"Aren't you coming out?" Kanzuki suddenly said.
Moments later, four shadows emerged from their hidden spots.
"When did you notice?" Genma asked, a senbon in his mouth, his hands also stuffed into his pants pockets, his expression remaining neutral.
"Just now."
"Stop lying." Genma scoffed. "You intentionally led us here. You noticed us in the shop, didn't you?"
"Did you guess that?"
"..."
Genma was caught off guard, feeling increasingly irritable with this boy who was younger than him.
"Are you looking for a fight?" Kanzuki asked directly.
"Your attitude has made all my carefully planned lines and scenarios useless," Genma replied slowly.
"Oh, that's quite disappointing for you." Kanzuki said indifferently.
Kanzuki's demeanor made Genma feel irritated. He asked in a deep, serious tone: "Aren't you worried about the consequences?"
Kanzuki's expression remained calm as he replied, "I wouldn't call the military police."
Genma chuckled coldly. "It's too late for regrets. You should reconsider the mistakes you made by provoking those you shouldn't have."
Kanzuki sighed at this point.
"You really talk too much."
Whoosh!
One shadow among the four darted forward first; it was Raidou who couldn't hold back any longer and decided to take action directly.
He was unarmed, presumably due to the sight of Kanzuki. Charging towards him with bare fists, he aimed a powerful punch straight at Kanzuki's chest.
Seeing the attack coming, Kanzuki's expression remained perfectly calm, easily sidestepping the powerful punch.
When Raidou realized he had missed, he quickly pressed the offensive, launching a flurry of punches and kicks. His taijutsu skills were quite solid, each strike executed swiftly.
However, none of it proved effective. Despite the seemingly concentrated attack, Kanzuki appeared unbothered, holding the food bag in one hand while the other remained in his pants pocket, effortlessly dodging all of Raidou's strikes.
As Raidou perceived Kanzuki was toying with him, his irritation grew. He swung his right arm for a horizontal punch, but the next moment, Kanzuki had vanished from view.
Suddenly, he felt a weight on his shoulder, and when he turned, he realized Kanzuki was standing on him.
He quickly raised his hands to push Kanzuki away, but Kanzuki lightly jumped off, landing gracefully beside him.
"Is that all the strength you have?" Kanzuki asked calmly, with indifference.
A chuunin's strength might surpass that of some mundane individuals, but that was all it was.
"You guys are about the same level," Kanzuki said, directing his gaze at Genma and the others.
The expressions of the four darkened, and the feeling of being belittled stoked their anger.
"Let's attack together!" Genma ordered, while Aoba and Hayate each pulled out their respective weapons: kunai and tachi.
The four took up combat stances and were about to rush forward when Kanzuki spoke again.
"Forget it."
They were all momentarily stunned, unsure of what this boy meant, but his next words only fueled their anger further.
"The dango will spoil if left outside the fridge too long."
Kanzuki referred to the bag of dango he held from the dango shop from earlier. All four of them remembered it, and during the battle, they realized he hadn't even lifted a finger.
Whoosh!
Genma suddenly spat out the senbon in his mouth, shooting it towards Kanzuki.
The steel needle turned into a shining streak of metal in the night, piercing through Kanzuki's body and impaling itself into a tree nearby. Genma was taken aback, only to see Kanzuki slowly turn into a shadow.
What's happening...
The four were in a state of confusion. As they searched for Kanzuki's location, they suddenly felt an invisible force bind their bodies, unable to move even a finger.
"Binding Paralysis... it's the Binding Genjutsu!" Aoba exclaimed in shock.
"Genjutsu?!"
"When did he form the seals?!" Genma shouted in disbelief—had they been toyed with like this?
In the next second, Kanzuki appeared right in front of Genma, coldly gazing at him.
"What made you think I wouldn't notice the lack of seals?"
Before Genma could react, Kanzuki's form shattered and transformed into a wave of fierce flames, the heat washing over them as Genma only saw a sea of red.
"No... No!"
"Ah!!!!"
Screams tore through the quiet night, filled with despair, rising and falling.
Kanzuki glanced at the four who lay on the ground, their bodies unharmed but their expressions dazed and vacant.
Pathetic.
He ignored them and turned to leave.
It wouldn't be long before the military police were alerted.
He had no desire to get involved with such trouble.
