Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Then Let’s Change Two People
Kanzuki's system is quite simple; it doesn't issue tasks, has no exchange store, and lacks any other special functions. Besides a few simple notes, it only contains information about character routes and favorability.
For males, there are only bond routes, while for females, there are conquest routes.
The former grants rewards upon achieving bonds, while the latter is relatively more complex, involving two stages.
A kiss, and... cough cough.
However, as long as Kanzuki is willing, the latter is actually far simpler.
Yet, Kanzuki is not the kind of ruthless person.
In the notes regarding favorability provided by the system, the favorability of an ordinary stranger is usually around 55-60. Above 60 indicates goodwill; 70 and above can be considered friends, while above 80 signifies close friends, where a romantic relationship could be attempted.
When favorability reaches 90, as with Shisui, the bonds can be likened to sworn brotherhood, allowing for absolute trust and mutual reliance in life-and-death situations.
When it hits 95, it represents unwavering loyalty until death.
However, numbers are dead, and people are alive.
The digits only reflect a person's attitude but do not lock it in.
Everything Kanzuki does or says can cause these numbers to fluctuate.
He realized this shortly after acquiring the system.
Kurenai's favorability was at 40, which indicates animosity; if it were to drop any lower, they would be attacking each other on sight.
Yet Kanzuki never regretted anything he did.
As a ninja, he was originally someone whose overall abilities were above standard—that standard being that of a jounin.
He could use some simple genjutsu and had various strategies to counter them.
But it wasn't until he received the reward for "Genjutsu Proficiency" that he truly understood how little he knew about genjutsu.
It was as if he had only glimpsed a tiny corner of an iceberg and suddenly found himself with the entire iceberg.
Visual Genjutsu, Auditory Genjutsu, Tactile Genjutsu, and Binding Genjutsu—all of these resided in Kanzuki's mind. In other words, aside from some genjutsu requiring special prerequisites, he had mastered all forms of genjutsu.
He had originally excelled in taijutsu, but now he was a genuine Genjutsu Master.
However, Kurenai likely harbored resentment towards him now and might take some retaliatory measures.
But he wasn't afraid.
Root.
After arriving as usual, Kanzuki was summoned by Danzo. This was his second meeting with Danzo since joining Root, and Gaku was not present.
"There's a mission I need to assign to you," Danzo said straightforwardly, handing him a scroll.
"Open it."
Kanzuki received the scroll with both hands and unfurled it to read.
The mission appeared to be quite normal; it was simply a surveillance mission, but the target was somewhat special.
Or rather, sensitive.
Uchiha Fugaku.
"The surveillance of the Uchiha clan has never ceased, but there are some aspects we can't be too excessive about," Danzo began, seemingly explaining things for Kanzuki's benefit.
"However, due to the increasing disputes arising from the Uchiha within the village lately, I want you to closely monitor his movements and gather intelligence to uncover the reasons behind it."
"Be sure not to expose yourself."
"...Understood," Kanzuki replied, lowering his head.
Sending him to monitor the Uchiha clan leader?
This rather peculiar assignment made one ponder Danzo's intentions.
Not to mention the real difficulty involved in executing the task: Danzo's subordinates were certainly not lacking in capable associates, like his senior Gaku who was with him. Why assign such a task to a newcomer like him?
Is this another test?
But this wasn't a test of his abilities or character; it was meant to ascertain which side he stood on.
He entered Root through Shisui, who was also a member of the Uchiha clan. It wasn't difficult to see how he could be suspected of being Shisui's mole, or an eye for the Uchiha.
Danzo aimed to use this mission's feedback to determine his position. If Uchiha Fugaku were to find out, it would also serve as Danzo's warning to the Uchiha.
Boring political maneuvering.
Kanzuki thought to himself.
Compared to the underlying implications, the task's nature seemed too weak and redundant.
Afterward, Kanzuki found Shisui and shared everything with him; they agreed to meet at the edge of the forest in Konoha.
Unlike Kanzuki, Shisui was more focused on Uchiha Fugaku.
"Aren't you going to tell him?" Kanzuki asked.
"I've spoken with the clan leader multiple times, but each time I sense his determination is stronger than before," Shisui replied, sounding helpless.
"This so-called warning will only further provoke him. Oboro, be very careful not to expose yourself during the mission."
Determination? The desire to rebel?
Kanzuki said nothing, simply watching him.
"What's wrong?" Shisui asked, noticing the unusual intensity in Kanzuki's gaze.
"You really know how to give me a tough time," Kanzuki remarked.
"Uchiha Fugaku is still the leader of a clan; I'm merely a chuunin."
"Oboro." Shisui sighed, looking resigned.
"I know your strength; you'll be fine as long as you're careful."
Leaning against a tree, Kanzuki said, "What does it matter whether I expose myself or not? The Hokage has ANBU monitoring the Uchiha day and night, and Danzo is also involved."
"The contradictions are becoming more pronounced; an explosion is just a matter of time."
Shisui shook his head. "There's still room for negotiation."
"From where? The Hokage or the Uchiha clan leader?"
"If the Hokage is willing to give the Uchiha a chance, it's predicated on the understanding that the Uchiha won't rebel, right?"
"Oboro, how can you…" Shisui responded, shocked.
Kanzuki replied nonchalantly, "Such things are easy to guess. Do you really think the Hokage is generous?"
"…The Hokage has shown enough tolerance towards the Uchiha." Shisui paused before saying slowly.
Hearing this, Kanzuki smirked, "Shisui, what real action has the Hokage taken to rectify the overall situation regarding the Uchiha?"
"Instead, he has offloaded the problem onto you, onto the Uchiha."
"Turning a blind eye to Danzo's actions, but adhering firmly to the Hokage's bottom line regarding the Uchiha."
"This is the tolerance you speak of?"
"To corner someone, only to later say they chose their own path, that you gave them a chance?"
"This is a tactic commonly used by politicians."
Shisui irritably closed his eyes. "Enough."
"Oboro, your prejudice is too great."
Kanzuki's gaze darkened. "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't give a damn about the Uchiha's fate."
"But if the Uchiha were to cease existing due to rebellion, how would you deal with it, Shisui?"
"A hero sacrificing family for justice?"
"Or the disgraceful offspring of a doomed clan?"
"Which of those glories do you want? Do you really wish to carry such a mark for the rest of your life?"
Shisui firmly countered, "The Uchiha will not rebel!"
"Oh?" Kanzuki coldly laughed. "What gives you such certainty?"
"If Fugaku-dono ultimately insists on a coup..." Shisui's gaze became resolute, seemingly having made a decision.
"To change his mind?" Kanzuki took up his thread.
"..."
"But even without Uchiha Fugaku, will the Hokage's higher-ups let go of their mistrust towards the Uchiha?" Kanzuki continued.
"Will Danzo cease his machinations? Will the villagers drop their prejudices against the Uchiha? Will the Uchiha be able to integrate into the community?"
"Which of these can you truly change?"
"In the end, the contradictions will remain unresolved, and the Uchiha will likely see a second clan leader driven to repeat the past over and over."
Shisui was left speechless, unable to rebut.
"All these matters can be addressed slowly," Shisui said, now lacking the previous confidence he had.
Kanzuki's tone turned calm: "As you said, Uchiha Fugaku's determination is growing stronger, which also means he is being driven step by step towards this path. In the past, he might have had other ideas, but now he feels that any other paths are closed off."
"The relationship between Konoha and the Uchiha isn't something that can be resolved simply by one side compromising."
"To fundamentally resolve this issue, both the village and the Uchiha must change; it's unrealistic to think you can turn the tide by changing just one person."
Shisui raised his head, staring at him in daze. "How do we change it?"
Kanzuki's expression turned indifferent. "Then let's change two people."
