Chapter 878: The Final Battle 3 - The Death of Ju Shou
Yuan Shao personally arrived at the front lines of the battlefield and even drew his sword to slay a soldier of Liu Bei's Army, instantly rallying the previously collapsing morale of Yuan Shao's Army. If Yuan Shao could act with such bravery, what fear could ordinary soldiers possibly have?
When Yuan Shao charged forward, the entire army launched a counter-charge, even pushing back the fierce assault of Liu Bei's Army. However, grand-scale battles rely on persistence—temporary bursts of力量 cannot undo the devastating blow of losing the Central Army's chief general beneath the command banner.
It could be said that this sudden resurgence only succeeded in recovering the corpse of Yann Liang, and nothing more!
"Who dares block me!" Seizing the moment when Guan Yu drew the enemy's attention, Gan Ning led his soldiers in a ferocious advance. His troops, risking their lives, surged ahead, slamming directly into Yuan Shao's Central Army's last line of defense.
But the Great Halberdiers, with iron-like arms, held firm against Gan Ning's Personal Army, like an unyielding wall. The two sides began a bitter stalemate there.
Simultaneously, Jiangh Qi and Zhang He, who had earlier swept around Liu Bei's Army's flanks, also completed the tasks Ju Shou had assigned to them during Yuan Shao's Army's counter-charge.
The two forces led by Zhang He and Jiangh Qi extended like the wings of a great goose, one long and one short, swooping around toward Liu Bei's rear.
Especially Zhang He's Bingzhou Wolf Cavalry, which unfolded ferociously like a wolf's jaws, primed to bite into the rear of Liu Bei's Army.
Just as Zhang He was about to achieve this predetermined objective, a gray figure suddenly rushed out. Moments later, an entire wave of gray figures emerged from the rear of Liu Bei's Army, charging toward Zhang He, resulting in a direct collision with his Bingzhou Wolf Cavalry.
Two elite cavalry units, famed for their unparalleled bravery, clashed head-on at that moment. Countless sprays of blood erupted, but neither side hesitated, their long spears piercing mercilessly at their opponents. Though the White Horse Soldiers had perished, their spirit remained embedded in the hearts of these warriors.
"Clang!" A loud clash rang out as Zhang He and Zhao Yun collided with needlepoint precision. The next instant, they passed each other while leaning forward. A softer sound followed as they withdrew their weapons. Zhang He looked at his sword, now chipped at the blade, and felt a cold chill in his heart.
"Turn around! Wipe them out!" Emerging from the assault, Zhang He slowed his Elite Cavalry and turned back, fixing his gaze on the blood-soaked Zhao Yun before him. The edges of his own battle robes dripped with the blood of Liu Bei's Army. Zhang He knew that unless he annihilated the much smaller cavalry force before him, he could forget achieving Ju Shou's objectives today.
As the overlapping cavalry units intersected once more, hundreds fell in an instant. Despite this, neither side flinched but instead stared unwaveringly at the opposing riders. Both understood what kind of cavalry could rival their prowess, and both knew the tactics required to counter such enemies. This was truly a war of knowing oneself and one's opponent!
"Kill!" Zhang He roared furiously, charging without fear toward Zhao Yun's forces. His army followed suit, surging forward as commanded. Though Zhang He himself was weaker than Zhao Yun, the victor in battle was never decided by a single warrior's martial force!
With a murderous glint in his eyes, Zhao Yun spurred his horse forward, leaping out ahead of his troops. Behind him, his cavalry roared and charged as one, united in resolve. Neither side would retreat—it was a fight until death, a battle without end!
[Remember, Zilong, your mission is to hold back the first cavalry unit attempting to flank us from Yuan Shao's Army, no matter the cost. Our victory hinges on you!] As Zhao Yun danced his spear and sword in deadly precision, Jia Xu's words surfaced in his mind, making his strikes even more ruthless.
Meanwhile, Jiangh Qi's shorter-winged army encountered resistance from Sunx Guan, Yin Li, and Wu Dun. In contrast to Jiangh Qi's reliance on commanding troops and strategy, the forces stationed here by Jia Xu were all notorious for their ferocity in combat against bandits and their disregard for conventional tactics.
Though these three armies collectively had less than half the manpower of Jiangh Qi's forces, their relentless, dagger-like assaults threw Jiangh Qi's army into chaos, completely disrupting their rhythm and preventing any coherent advance.
However, neither Zhao Yun nor Sunx Guan's forces could change one crucial fact: their troops were heavily outnumbered and could only hold the enemy at bay. Even with Zhao Yun's overwhelming martial prowess, he could not fully suppress Zhang He's army.
While Yuan Shao's Central Army conducted a sudden burst of fierce attacks that initially overwhelmed Liu Bei's forces, the third wave of strikes surged forth, and Yuan Shao's once-daring advance was suppressed again.
At the overlapping fronts, Liu Bei's Tiger Guard Army steadily pushed forward. Despite the overall stalemated progress of the larger army, Liu Bei's rear forces continued advancing. Soon, like the sharp tip of a spear, they collided with Yuan Shao's Central Army.
"Kill!" Liu Bei roared fiercely, evoking the same resolve Yuan Shao had displayed earlier. With Liu Bei leading by example, his army erupted with heightened morale and unparalleled combat strength, swiftly suppressing Yuan Shao's Army.
"Command the Great Halberdiers to reinforce their shield defense! Protect the Lord and retreat the Central Army! Signal the left and right flanks to join the fray!" Ju Shou shouted as he stepped forward.
Although Yann Liang had fallen, Ju Shou knew one crucial thing: Yuan Shao's army was on the brink of victory. If the Central Army successfully retreated, Liu Bei's forces would be trapped in a pincer attack. With the rear forces bogged down and unable to break through, Yuan Shao's troops would surround and crush them with ease.
At that very moment, Gan Ning charged forward madly on horseback. Using the Horizontal River Iron Chain, he ripped open a gap in the iron wall formed by the Great Halberdiers. Leaping into the air, Gan Ning seized the opportunity he had awaited for so long.
"Ju Shou, die for me!" Gan Ning shouted as he soared, his one-zhang-long Horizontal River Iron Chain swinging wildly. The iron chain armor wrapped around his body was shed at the same time, further extending the chain's reach.
As Gan Ning leapt upward, the Horizontal River Iron Chain stretched past its usual three-meter length to over ten meters. Ju Shou, previously out of reach, found himself suddenly enveloped within Gan Ning's strike, the sharp spearhead of the chain stabbing fiercely toward Ju Shou's chest and abdomen.
"Get out of my way!" Ju Shou, using every ounce of his Spiritual Capacity, desperately tried to repel the Horizontal River Iron Chain as if deflecting a rain of crossbow bolts.
"Clang!" The chain that was initially stabbing straight toward Ju Shou suddenly deflected to his left under the full exertion of his Spiritual Capacity, narrowly missing him—a move seemingly destined to fail.
"Thud…" In a split-second burst, a spurt of fresh blood erupted from Ju Shou's chest. He looked down in agony at the spear pike that had pierced through him, his trembling hand reaching toward the wound on his chest. His heart had been punctured, and as he slowly turned his head in an attempt to see who had struck him from behind, his life faded away. Even in his final moments, Ju Shou could not comprehend how an enemy had appeared behind him… (To be continued.
