Chapter 53: Chapter 52: Greed?
{T/N: Whilst skimming through some Chinese sites, I came across some promising Fanfics... So I decided to do the same thing I'm doing with this one... Translate, Edit, and distribute...
The only difference being they are not hidden behind a pay wall... Meaning >> I'm gonna translate the entire thing(s) this time... Starting tomorrow of course...}
...
Soon, the two arrived at the slums the appa stall owner had mentioned.
As soon as they reached the entrance, Emilia couldn't help but pinch her nose. It seemed she wasn't quite used to the smell of this place.
Everywhere they looked, there were dilapidated houses. Through the broken doors and windows, they could see residents with lifeless eyes and dirty clothes.
"So, where do we go next? Should we ask someone?"
Emilia frowned, her purple eyes turning to Graham for guidance.
"No, look at the state of these people. Do you think they'd answer your questions? More importantly, do you have any money?"
"Money? No..." Emilia blushed, feeling embarrassed. She never carried money when she went out...
Mainly because she didn't need to.
Her meals, clothes, and lodging were all taken care of by her maids. Why would she need to carry money?
"Exactly. Leave it to me. Since Puck-kun entrusted you to me, I should show what I can do~" Graham smiled confidently and gently raised his hand.
Then, to Emilia's astonishment, tiny green lights began to gather from the surroundings, illuminating Graham's palm.
"A spirit?" Emilia placed a hand over her fluttering heart, a look of understanding dawning on her face.
No wonder Graham-san and Puck got along so well, he was a spirit arts user!
"Alright, I know where to go now. Follow me, Emilia-san."
"Okay." Nodding firmly, Emilia followed him.
Learning that Graham was a spirit arts user, Emilia's wariness toward him lessened, and she began to trust him a bit more.
As Puck had once said, "Those trusted by spirits are kind-hearted people!" Emilia firmly believed this.
...
Old Man Rom's loot house was actually just a small wooden shack.
Inside, three people were discussing the price of the insignia Felt had stolen.
A young man with a fierce appearance and strange clothing suddenly offered to buy the insignia, which piqued the interest of Felt and the owner of the loot house, a tall giant of an old man.
But when Natsuki Subaru admitted he was broke, the two felt they had been played.
*Swish!*
Felt drew a short blade and pressed it against Subaru's neck, saying irritably, "Hey buddy, there's a limit to jokes! If you don't have money, why did you even offer to buy the insignia?"
"Uh... I don't have money, but I have something valuable to trade!"
Feeling the cold blade against his skin, Subaru broke out in a cold sweat, but he remained calm. He pulled out his flip phone and started snapping pictures of Felt and Old Man Rom!
*Click~* *Click~—!*
"Hey, what are you doing? What's that weird thing you're pointing at us? What did you do?"
"Hehe, this is my family heirloom, Medea! It has the power to freeze time! How about I trade this for the insignia?"
Subaru proudly showed Felt the photos he had taken on his phone, which displayed images of Felt and Old Man Rom.
"Oh~!"
"So, this must be... that rare artifact called a 'Meteor'!" exclaimed the old giant.
"A 'Meteor'?" Felt looked completely confused, having no idea what Old Man Rom was talking about.
"That's right. These things are extremely rare. Only nobles can afford them. It's definitely worth more than 20 holy gold coins!"
The giant old man spoke with certainty, and Subaru seized the opportunity to stand up, saying smugly, "Exactly! This is my family heirloom, the Meteor artifact, named Medea! So, how about it? Will you trade the stolen insignia for this?"
"Calling it 'stolen' is so rude. I only do this out of necessity. But since Old Man Rom has appraised it, your item does have value for trade!" said Felt.
"Right? Right? Then hurry up and give me the insignia!" Subaru demanded.
"No!" Felt flatly refused, leaving Subaru dumbfounded.
"Why not? Didn't you confirm it's a Meteor? It's worth more than 20 holy gold coins, you know~!"
"Because I have to wait for the employer to arrive. I, Felt, have a reputation to uphold. If you're willing to trade a 'Meteor' for this insignia, it must be really valuable."
"Therefore, I need to consider the possibility that the employer might offer a higher price. So, I can't trade the insignia with you right now!"
Felt smirked cunningly. She had been poor for too long, so every extra coin counted!
As she put it, if she didn't steal, she'd have to sell herself.
But if she did that, all her years of hard work and perseverance would be meaningless.
That's why she had refused Graham's offer to become his servant, wasn't that just another form of selling herself? {T/N: When?}
Besides, Graham's money pouch was still in her possession!
Once the deal was done, she would leave these slums and move to the royal capital!
Subaru pointed at Felt angrily, trying to convince her, "Hey! I'm telling you, you're young but greedy! No one will offer a higher price than me!"
"Hmph! We'll only know after the employer arrives and we compare offers. Don't worry, buddy. If the employer offers less than 20 holy gold coins, I'll trade the insignia for your 'Meteor'!"
Although Felt didn't like being called greedy, she couldn't bear to give up on such a lucrative deal, so she tried to placate Subaru with these words.
Even if the deal falls through, there's still goodwill, right?
Whoever offers more gets it, no problem with that, right?
