Chapter 13: The Wrath of the Wastes
The interior of the temple was a labyrinth of high columns and twisting corridors, all drenched in the same golden light that had filled the outside of the realm. But it was impossible to mistake the malignant energy coming from the heart of the rift. The oppressive presence grew stronger with each step, its pull both physical and mental, threatening to drag Aiden's resolve into darkness.
"We're close," the woman said, her voice steady but low. She moved with purpose, her sword glowing faintly as it responded to the Nexus energy around them.
Aiden followed, his senses on high alert. The air was thick and still, the silence broken only by the occasional rumble of distant tremors. Shadows seemed to slither along the walls, their movements unnatural and disjointed.
"I'm guessing this isn't going to be as simple as walking up to the core and smashing it," Aiden said, his grip tightening on his blade.
"Nothing ever is," the woman replied. "Be ready for anything."
They stepped into a massive central space, its cupola covered by intricate murals revealing the coming and going of the Golden Wastes. At its center, inside the rift was the core-a beating mass of black and dark red energy. Out of its "roots," things were withered and dying like rot. Splinters of a golden statue here and there peppered the floors, a mangled testament of the fall of the kingdom.
As Aiden and the woman came closer, the chamber began to shake violently. The tendrils of the core withdrew a little, and the shadows along the walls coalesced into a towering figure. It was a monstrous amalgamation of human and serpent, its body covered in golden scales that shone with unnatural light. Its eyes burned with malevolence, and its voice echoed through the chamber, deep and resonant.
You dare defy the will of the rift?" the creature hissed, its gaze fixed on them. "This realm is mine now. Leave, or be consumed."
Aiden exchanged a glance with the woman, who stepped forward, her sword raised. "We're here to destroy the rift and free this realm. If you stand in our way, you'll fall like the others.
The creature let out a low, guttural laugh. "Foolish mortals. You have no idea what you're dealing with.
It lifted its clawed hand and chaos broke loose within the chamber. The scattered shards of statues, as if called forth by it, lit up; and their pieces soared into the air. Piece by piece, the broken bodies reunited to become some sort of terrible parody of their original forms-the glorious ones they were before. Hollow sockets glowed from the core energy and lifeless gazes met Aiden and the woman from them.
"Well, this is new," Aiden muttered, raising his blade.
"Focus on the core," the woman said, her tone sharp. "I'll handle the statues."
Before he could protest, she charged toward the nearest statue, her sword slicing through its corrupted form. The golden fragments exploded outward, only to reform seconds later.
Aiden turned his attention to the core. The Nexus energy inside him surged as he raised his hands, channeling it into a concentrated blast. The beam struck the core, causing it to ripple and pulse violently, but it quickly stabilized, its tendrils lashing out in response.
One shot at him, far too fast for him to respond. It wrapped around his arm, the dark energy it was imbued with blazing like acid through his skin. Aiden let out a scream as his mind lost focus, attacked by the influence of the core. Bits and pieces of his history filled his mind—memories of losing battles, loved ones he failed to protect, and the worlds crumbling under his watch.
"No!" he shouted, struggling against the tendril's grip. He focused himself, drawing on the Nexus energy to sever the tendril with a burst of light. The core recoiled, its tendrils retreating momentarily.
The woman glanced back at him, her expression grim. "Stay focused, Aiden. It's trying to break you."
He nodded, his breathing ragged as he steadied himself. The visions lingered at the edges of his mind, but he pushed them aside, channeling his energy into another blast. This time, the beam struck the core more directly, causing cracks to spread across its surface.
The creature let out a loud, frenzied roar as its massive form lunged toward Aiden. He barely dodged in time, rolling across the floor as its claws carved deep gashes into the stone where he had stood.
"You cannot win," the creature growled on, its voice reverberating through the chamber. "This realm is mine, and you are nothing but pawns in a futile game."
Aiden gritted his teeth, pushing himself to his feet. "Funny, I was just about to say the same thing to you."
He raised his sword, its blade shining with energy from Nexus, and charged into the core. The creature advanced to block his path, but the woman had appeared at the side of it, her sword flashing as she thrust it deep into the shoulder of the creature. It shrieked in anguish, its focus now on the woman for the moment.
"Now, Aiden!" she called out.
Seizing the opportunity, Aiden unleashed another wave of energy, more potent this time. The beam, shooting straight at the core, struck the surface, shattering it and sending fragments of dark energy flying in all directions. The chamber trembled violently, and the core's tendrils writhed in agony as they disintegrated.
The creature let out a final, guttural scream as its form began to dissolve, its golden scales crumbling into dust. The statues around the chamber collapsed, their corrupted energy fading into nothingness.
As the dust settled, Aiden and the woman stood in the now-silent chamber, their breathing heavy. The oppressive weight of the rift's presence was gone, replaced by a faint, soothing hum of Nexus energy.
"It's done," Aiden said, his voice laced with exhaustion.
The woman nodded, lowering her sword. "One more realm freed. But the rift isn't finished yet."
Aiden sighed, wiping sweat from his brow. "Yeah, I figured. What's next?"
She turned to the Nexus portal, which flickered back into existence at the center of the chamber. "We move on. There's no time to rest."
Aiden looked at the portal, his resolve wavering for just a moment before he straightened his shoulders. "Fine. Let's keep going."
As they stepped through the portal, the temple and the Golden Wastes faded behind them, another realm saved but countless challenges still ahead.
