Chapter 515: Katharina found me
The silence that had gripped the chasm, heavy and suffocating, finally broke when the group reached the edge of the crevice.
Vergil was the first to climb, pulling his bloodied body out as if it were just another step on a stroll. He stretched his arms back, letting out a dry crack in his bones, as if waking from a deep nap. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes still shone with that menacing tone that had frightened even his own companions minutes before.
"Hmph…" he sighed, with an amused smile. "A good kill, good exercise. Now all that's left is to find the others."
He turned, looking at the horizon of twisted trees and the purple sky that burned above them, as if painted by distant flames. Her gaze swept over every detail, but her voice was unconcerned, almost casual:
"Raphaeline, Stella, Sapphire, Sepphirothy, Ada, Katharina… and my mother."
Roxanne, still panting, wiped the sweat from her forehead. Her hand trembled, but her eyes were alert.
"Find them…" she muttered, settling Titania beside her. "It's going to take time. This place is a damned labyrinth. This forest is good for nothing but killing everything that enters."
Vany spat blood on the ground and raised an eyebrow in agreement.
"She's right. This shit has no beginning or end. It's like walking around inside a stomach, waiting to be digested."
Rize, the more serious one, ran her fingers over the hilt of her sword, as if caressing the blade.
"I agree." Her voice was hard, practical. "The smell here is treacherous, the trails repeat themselves." If the others are alive, they must be hunted too.
Silence fell again for a brief moment, until Titania, mounted on Zuri's scales in her colossal serpent form, lifted her head. Her golden eyes flashed, and her breathing grew heavy.
"Wait…" her voice was faint but urgent. "I sense something. Big. Very big…"
But before she could finish, the world exploded red.
A bolt of living magma tore through the forest, slicing through trees like dry twigs. Heat exploded in waves, the ground cracked, and the air became a curtain of incandescent fire.
The group barely had time to react. Zuri rose, curling into protective circles, and Rize instinctively raised her sword. Roxanne pulled Titania close, shielding her.
But Vergil?
Vergil just laughed.
He raised a hand, and just as the magma beam was about to pierce the entire group, he caught it.
A deafening boom echoed through the clearing as the impact ignited everything around them, but the fire didn't reach them.
Vergil planted his feet firmly on the ground. His fingers sank into the burning liquid energy, and behind the curtain of lava, a silhouette began to take shape.
It wasn't an "it." It was a "she."
The lava flowed, shaping a female body that emerged like a goddess from the heart of a volcano. Her hair didn't fall—it dripped, rivers of magma flowing in incandescent strands. Her eyes glowed a living amber, two embers pulsing with intensity. Her skin glowed red and gold, and the air around her crackled, twisting in hot waves.
Vergil continued to laugh, even as the skin on his hand crackled and burned in contact with the living magma. The flames devoured his flesh, but as quickly as they appeared, the wounds closed, regenerating as if he were made to endure it.
"Hah…" His laugh was low, filled with pleasure. "At last."
The silhouette then launched itself at him, and instead of striking him, it embraced him.
The impact sent up a wave of heat that made the forest scream, dry trees exploding into embers instantly.
Vergil wrapped his arms around the flaming figure, unhurried, as if welcoming an old love. The heat didn't matter. Neither the burned flesh nor the pain. Everything was healing, everything was regenerating.
"It's been a long time, my wife," he murmured, with the most dangerous smile he had ever shown.
The figure lifted its face. Amidst the incandescent glow, the magma flowing like liquid tears, there she was.
Katharina.
Her lips curved into a soft, sweet, almost childlike smile—but impossible to mistake for innocence.
"Vergil…" Her voice was melodic, vibrating like bells amidst the fire. "I finally found you!"
The entire group froze.
Zuri, even in her serpent form, backed away slightly, her eyes fixed on that impossible sight. Titania let out a shaky breath, Roxanne gasped for air, and Vanny blinked several times, trying to believe what she was seeing.
The only one who managed to speak was Rize.
"That… that's your wife?!" Her voice nearly broke mid-sentence, shock etched in every line of her face.
Vergil, still hugging Katharina, tilted his head back, laughing heartily.
"Of course it is. Who else would cross hell in magma form just to hug me?"
Katharina stared at him, chuckling softly as well. Her laugh was sweet, almost delicate, in stark contrast to the absurd power pouring from her. Magma dripped from her hair like a flaming veil, splashing onto Vergil's chest, burning but healing at the same time.
She lifted a hand and placed it on his face. The sound of sizzling flesh echoed, but Vergil simply closed his eyes, breathing deeply, as if relishing the touch.
"You've always been resilient..." Katharina whispered, with almost frightening tenderness. "Only you can handle touching me like this."
Vergil opened his eyes, his smile sharp.
The two laughed together, a melody so intimate it made the entire group look at each other, unsure whether they felt relief, fear, or pure embarrassment.
The heat around them was still unbearable. The ground creaked, cracking as if it were about to open into rivers of lava. And yet, in the midst of that hell, Vergil and Katharina embraced like lovers who hadn't seen each other in millennia.
Vany was the first to break the silence.
"Okay." She scratched the back of her neck, staring at the scene. "I don't know what's weirder: her being literally made of magma... or you two calling each other husband and wife in the middle of this fucking murderous forest."
Katharina turned her gaze to Vanny and stared at those enormous dairy cow breasts... "Where did you find this dairy cow?"
Vany looked at her, "W-what did you-"
"Oh, sorry," Katharina said, pulling away from Vergil, her body returning to normal. "There, hot and perfect for my husband," she said as her red hair and green eyes appeared.
