Chapter 508: Phenix in Hell
The sky of hell seemed to have split in two.
On one side, the icy blue of the Dragon, still roaring its insane fury.
On the other, the incandescent red of the Phoenix, dancing in the air like a living storm of fire and reborn flames.
And in the midst of that sea of embers, stood Sapphire.
Her spear, shrouded in crimson energy, reflected the colossal bird's glow, each movement a flash that streaked the sky. The Phoenix flapped its wings, and each beat was a cataclysm: rivers of fire spread across the firmament, as if trying to set hell itself ablaze.
Sapphire, however, did not retreat.
She advanced, cutting through the air like lightning. Each thrust of her spear split the space before her in incandescent lines. Its eyes glowed with the same intensity as the fire it faced, and the hatred it carried within fueled every attack.
The Phoenix screamed—not a sound, but an explosion. The roar was accompanied by a sea of flames that engulfed everything. The horizon vanished. There was no sky, no ground: only fire.
Sapphire spun in the air, her spear extending as if it were part of her very being. With a downward thrust, she cut the fire into two streams, clearing a path for herself. Still, the heat enveloped her, licking at her skin as if to consume her.
"Try harder!" she screamed, challenging the legendary creature.
The Phoenix responded by diving. Its flaming body fell like a free-falling sun, a flash that made Stella, even from a distance, raise her arms to shield her eyes.
Sapphire, instead of fleeing, rushed toward the beast.
The two forces clashed.
The spear collided with the Phoenix's incandescent beak. The impact created a shockwave that swept for miles, ripping rocks from the ground, incinerating the air, and bending the space around it like shattering glass.
The heat was so intense that even Stella, even from a distance, felt her skin burn.
Sapphire, however, stood her ground. Her boots tore through the air, her muscles tensed to their maximum. Her arms trembled, but she didn't give an inch.
With a scream, she swung the spear, deflecting the beak's attack. The released energy exploded into embers, and Sapphire used the momentum to spin over the Phoenix's body.
A clean cut.
The spear's blade split the creature's flames, splitting its flaming plumage. For an instant, light scattered in sparks that fell like shooting stars.
But the Phoenix wasn't made of flesh.
It reformed itself. The flames flared again, closing the wound as if nothing had happened. And then, with a flap of its wings, the creature unleashed a circular blast of fire.
The ring of flames expanded in all directions, burning everything in its path.
Sapphire was engulfed in light.
Stella gasped.
"SAPPHIRE!"
But then, a flash of light pierced the fire.
Sapphire emerged from the flames, her spear spinning around her in frantic circles. Each rotation created a barrier of crimson energy that sliced through the fire, repelling it in spirals. Her entire body glowed, her eyes glowing.
"I WILL NOT BURN HERE!" she roared.
With a leap, she broke through the flaming wall and shot at the Phoenix's chest. Her spear found its mark. The impact split the creature's chest open, sending flames shooting out in all directions like a volcanic eruption.
But from within the wound, the fire only flared again, more intense. The Phoenix screamed, and its wings flared in an explosion so violent that Sapphire was thrown backward like a rag doll.
She spun in the air, blood dripping from her mouth, but steadied herself before falling. Her chest heaved with effort, her skin scarred with burns.
"So this is it…" she murmured, panting. "You truly are eternal."
The Phoenix flapped its wings again, and its plumage transformed into hundreds of flaming arrows that launched at Sapphire. Each feather was a blazing spear, swift as death.
Sapphire whirled the spear in circles. Each strike cut through one, two, ten arrows. The sky filled with cracks, explosions, red and gold flashes. But there were too many. She was hit in the shoulder, then in the leg. The heat burned her, and blood dripped down, mixed with the ashes.
Still, she pressed forward.
She used the very force of the flames against herself, propelling her body into rapid spins. Each rotation was a mad dance amidst the fire, and her spear sliced through the air in short, precise strokes.
Until she reached the creature again.
She leaped, screaming with all her pent-up fury:
"DIE, YOU WRECK!"
The spearhead descended like a red bolt of lightning, piercing the Phoenix's flames.
The impact reverberated through the inferno.
Stella, still struggling to stay upright, felt the ground beneath her tremble. The entire sky seemed to have been cut in two.
When the light faded, Sapphire was suspended in the air, gasping. Her spear had pierced the creature's right wing, ripping it apart.
The Phoenix screamed, and the scream turned to fire.
The bird's body burned even more violently, as if it were about to be reborn in the midst of battle. The fire, which had been red, now took on ever-increasing golden hues.
Sapphire gritted her teeth.
"You will not be reborn on top of me."
She raised her spear again, ready to pierce the creature's flaming heart.
But the fire exploded.
The shockwave threw her away, her body spinning until it collided with a fragment of suspended rock. The impact was brutal, but she rose, even as blood gushed down her arm.
On the other side, Stella was still fighting to stay alive against the Blue Dragon.
The two of them, even separated by colossal monsters, were trapped in the same storm.
Sapphire glanced at Stella, who was barely breathing. The Blue Dragon roared, ready to advance again. The Phoenix, in turn, rose into the air in golden flames, as if it were the sun itself reborn in hell.
Sapphire landed on a floating rock, her knees nearly giving way. For an instant, just an instant, her heavy breathing mingled with the roar of the two beasts.
Then, Stella fell beside her, exhausted, her winds trembling.
The two leaned back against each other.
The silence between them lasted a second. Just one.
Sapphire laughed hoarsely, spitting blood.
"How... did we get to this?"
Stella, even bloodied, let out a short, tired, almost insane laugh.
"Who knows?"
And before them, the Phoenix and the Blue Dragon roared together, igniting and freezing the sky of hell.
