Erina had followed them all the way, and she had heard everything clearly from outside—what her grandfather was saying, and what Renz was saying. Hearing her grandfather's making things difficult towards Renz, she thought it over and decided she couldn't let the situation remain so passive. So, she burst in, intending to regain control.
Renz was momentarily stunned by her words. Erina, what are you doing?! What are you doing?! Can't you tell the Old Man is just giving me a warning, telling him not to be too indulgent at this age? If Renz had simply agreed and proven himself capable after becoming an adult, gaining the Old Man's approval would have been easy.
But with her intervention, wouldn't the Old Man be absolutely furious? What kind of daughter openly sided with an outsider like that? Anyone who didn't know better would think she had changed her surname to Su. Isn't she just messing with the Old Man's composure?
Senzaemon Nakiri's expression indeed changed. He hadn't expected Erina to say such words. Her meaning was simple: whether Renz could support her or not was irrelevant to Erina; she could support herself, and she was determined to be with him regardless. But Senzaemon Nakiri merely wanted to warn Renz not to go too far in their relationship, not to let a child come into the picture. Who would have thought that Erina's feelings for Renz had reached such a point?
"What do you know?" Senzaemon Nakiri slapped the table hard. "You're still young, life is long, and you'll need money for everything. If you marry this brat and don't use a single cent from the Nakiri family, you'll have to buy a house, right? Don't you know how much houses in Tokyo cost?"
"Do children need to live in good school districts, receive the best education, and have good hospitals nearby?"
"Even a single-story house like that would require a massive amount of money to furnish."
"The cost of a child's education, their growth, their hobbies—not to mention your own life, the dishes you like to eat, the high-quality ingredients you'll need for cooking—won't those also cost money?" Senzaemon Nakiri's anger had also flared up. What nonsense about a woman not needing money for her life.
That was utter rubbish. Senzaemon Nakiri wouldn't demand a dowry; his Nakiri family was vast and wealthy, not lacking in money. But to let his granddaughter marry into poverty... Senzaemon Nakiri was unwilling. He didn't want his granddaughter to live a hard life, nor should she, given their circumstances.
Renz could date his granddaughter, and Senzaemon Nakiri wouldn't even object to their marriage and union. However, "You brat, you must be able to support Erina before we talk about marriage."
If he couldn't support her, it was out of the question. And Erina, now, was even worse. If that brat couldn't support her, she'd support herself, and she was still determined to stand with him. What kind of spell did that kid cast on you?
"I can take out a loan," Erina said, unfazed by her grandfather's gaze. "Renz and I can take out a loan to buy a house and pay it back together."
"Besides, life is about living it together, isn't it? How could I just let Renz be the only one to earn money and support me?"
Renz knew that if he didn't step forward and declare his stance now, the collision of the Old Man's temper and Erina's temper would be like Mars colliding with Earth. When both sides got furious, things would go very badly.
"I know myself well," Renz said, not denying the correctness of the Old Man's view. It was indeed valid. From a guardian's perspective, entrusting his most beloved granddaughter to someone whose background was unknown, and who might not be able to support her, was too much of a gamble.
What if Renz wasn't the right person? That would truly harm Erina. Even if Renz and Erina both knew they were the right people for each other, the Old Man didn't know.
"I will do my best to prove myself," Renz understood what was lacking now: a track record that would convince the Old Man. Eishi Tsukasa was formidable, but defeating Tsukasa was not enough. Tsukasa was merely the most talented person at Totsuki Academy. The Old Man had seen and dealt with chefs ranked in the top ten globally by the ESPN ranking.
Tsukasa was merely a prospective candidate for these individuals. Potential didn't guarantee the ability to break in. No matter how high Renz's culinary skills were, they weren't as substantial as world ranking points. The top priority was to find a way to quickly win some prestigious culinary competitions with high value.
"As for transferring to Totsuki Academy, I will come after I win The-Blue World Young Chef Selection," Renz said in a calm, unassuming voice. This statement was incredibly arrogant. The-Blue World Young Chef Selection was not a competition that could simply be won, yet his words conveyed an almost certain confidence in winning.
Totsuki Academy only had three semesters. The-Blue is held once a year, meaning Renz only had three opportunities to transfer to Totsuki Academy. Value needed to be proven with achievements, not just words. The World Young Chef Selection championship, at the very least, would grant him the qualification to stand alongside the God's Tongue.
Senzaemon Nakiri gave Renz a deep look. That kind of unwavering self-confidence was rare for Senzaemon to see; even Eishi Tsukasa wouldn't dare claim such certainty. However, given Renz's comprehensive culinary skills, winning the championship wasn't impossible.
"As for your relationship, I will no longer inquire about it; just keep it within reasonable bounds," Senzaemon Nakiri said with a hearty laugh, no longer showing his previous anger. Putting this pressure on Renz also made him feel more at ease.
"I understand," Renz nodded.
"This old man is tired. Let's talk again when we have time," Senzaemon Nakiri said, waving his hand, and feigned a nap in his chair. Erina initially still wanted to argue, but seeing her grandfather speak like this, she could only give up.
Walking out of the principal's office with Renz, "Erina, you just completely betrayed both your husband and your grandfather," Renz said, annoyed. He had been talking well with the Old Man; essentially, the Old Man just wanted him to be more discreet. But when Erina came in and said what she did, it directly escalated the conflict. What was originally an elder's admonition now had a different flavor.
However, by some strange twist of fate, it wasn't a bad thing. At least Renz had clarified the Old Man's bottom line. The Old Man wasn't against Renz and Erina dating. As for whether he would object to their marriage, that was another matter. Fortunately, there was still room for maneuver. As long as Renz proved his capabilities and could support Erina, the Old Man might agree to marry Erina to him.
"This kind of thing has to be faced sooner or later," Erina, however, felt that she hadn't done anything wrong. This latent explosive had simply been ignited by Erina prematurely, and with this discussion, wasn't it clearer where her grandfather's tolerance line was?
"Aren't you afraid the Old Man will actually disown you from the Nakiri family?" Renz asked helplessly.
"No, I'm not. If my grandfather truly kicks me out, I'll just go to your house. You wouldn't not support me, would you?" Erina rolled her eyes. "Besides, even without the Nakiri family, we might be a bit poor. But we can still get a loan. Anyway, that's how ordinary people live: taking out a mortgage to buy a house, and then slowly paying it back. We just have to be a bit frugal with our daily expenses."
"It's just as I told my grandfather, we can slowly pay back the mortgage together. If you and I both work hard, we can easily earn enough to buy a house."
"Starting with the idea of eloping from the get-go, your approach is too wild," Renz couldn't help but retort. "Preparing for the worst is so typical of you." "However, I'll figure out the mortgage. You can just be my full-time lovely wife. I don't want my cute wife struggling on the work front every day. Besides, Rina and Haruki will need you to look after them then."
"Can't you be the house-husband, a full-time husband, and take care of the kids at home?" Erina retorted. "I'll handle earning money. My reputation as the God's Tongue is much more useful than yours."
Renz suddenly turned and leaned heavily towards Erina. Caught off guard, Erina was pressed against the nearby wall, with Renz's arm bracing against the wall beside her head.
"What are you doing? You suddenly scared me," Erina glared at Renz fiercely, trying to hide her initial startled reaction.
"When it comes to earning money, I won't let a woman support me," Renz said in a serious tone. "If you really don't want to be a full-time wife, I won't allow your work hours to exceed six hours a day."
"Why are you being so fierce?" Erina said innocently.
"If I'm not a little fierce, I'm afraid someone won't listen," Renz pulled back his arm. "It's not the first or second time things have gone in one ear and out the other."
"You don't need to work that hard."
