Counting names was a troublesome task, especially for a program with such a mixed bag of participants and no limits on skill levels. It was even more exhausting to go through. Mizutose had been counting names from 8 AM to almost 1 PM, and she was feeling quite tired.
The most annoying part wasn't just counting the contestants; even the friends and family group had to be registered. This was because, if they wished, friends and family could accompany the entire program and even stay together.
Thankfully, the slots for friends and family were limited to two people; any more, and it would become even more chaotic and troublesome. Now, Mizutose heard a very familiar name but couldn't recall who it was due to fatigue. Surprised, she looked up and froze.
"Could you please repeat, what is her relation to you?" Mizutose wondered if she had misheard—did the young man say "girlfriend"? Not a "classmate" relationship?
That couldn't be right! The boyfriend of the distinguished young lady of the Nakiri family surely had to be a scion from a similarly prestigious family.
Renz was about to repeat himself, but Erina clarified, "I'm his girlfriend."
"You want one room?" Mizutose asked suspiciously. She had thought she misheard earlier, but now it seemed otherwise.
"Could we have two rooms?" Renz mused. It was better to avoid suspicion. If the Old Man found out they were sharing a room for the program, he'd surely come at him with sharpened knives, ready for a jungle brawl. Even if Renz claimed he hadn't done anything, he'd have to see if the Old Man believed him. It was more reasonable for a couple of their age not to stay in the same room.
"Two rooms? Let me see." Mizutose smiled inwardly. If they didn't stay in the same room, the possibility of them being a fake couple increased greatly. Perhaps they were just friends, helping each other out for the sake of the God's Tongue, and simply fabricated a friends and family identity to participate. Mizutose glanced at the register in her hand.
"There might not be enough rooms available. If you absolutely need two rooms, we'll have to wait until the counting is over, and if there are extras, we can assign them then," Mizutose said.
"There's also a small town three kilometers from here where you can rent if it's full." She said this, giving Erina a graceful way out. If they really were a fake couple, true friends assisting each other, there was no need to put them in an awkward situation, forcing them to stay in the same room.
"There's no need for that much trouble; just one room is fine," Erina boldly decided.
"Aren't you afraid your grandfather will throw me into the sea?" Renz said, rubbing his forehead.
"What's there to panic about?" Erina knew her grandfather well. He wouldn't do anything drastic without sufficient evidence. Most importantly, Erina could easily protect Renz. If she truly stood in front of the Old Man, he would at most say a few angry words.
At these words, Mizutose realized her judgment might be wrong. Were they not a fake couple, but a real one? And one that had already communicated with their families?
"Uh, both of you, this program might be quite long, with a month of living together," Mizutose still offered a friendly reminder.
"During this time, it's easy to encounter awkward situations. For the friends and family group, you might consider visiting during the daytime filming and returning home at night." Even if they were a real couple, they hadn't experienced the test of living together, had they? Eighty percent of couples break up over cohabitation.
Bathing, eating, doing laundry—various daily habits can easily lead to conflicts due to differing lifestyles.
"Don't worry about it," Erina waved her hand. "Just give us our room number, and the key or room card."
Mizutose was momentarily stunned by Erina's assertive words. She lowered her head, registered a name, and handed over a key. "Room number is 301."
"Thank you," Renz and Erina both thanked her politely. Renz picked up Erina's suitcase and smoothly opened the door to leave. The two walked out of the office in coordinated steps. The entire village was neither too big nor too small, with many basic facilities. Soon, they found the hotel where they would be staying. Oh, it should be the dorms leased by the program now.
"301."
Renz opened the room door. The entire room was clean and fresh, with a faint aroma of herbs in the air. It had a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom.
"A world for two, it feels a bit lonely," Renz wondered if he was being perverse. When he had kids, he found them incredibly annoying, and raising them was extremely painful. He wished he could hire a few maids, send the children to another house, and let someone else take care of them. He used to think how wonderful it would be to live a couple's life with Erina every day, casually touching her hand, hugging her, and enjoying playful bed fights.
After the kids were gone, Renz ironically felt lonely. It wasn't noisy at all, and there were no kids asking a million questions. The joy in life had decreased.
"By the way, are their accommodations arranged so clearly?" Renz saw a box of tissues on the living room table, and next to it, an unknown brand of condoms.
"They even prepared condoms for us?" Renz muttered.
Renz silently looked at Erina's face.
"This must have been a couple's suite before, so they prepared these," Erina examined the condoms in Renz's hand, then their eyes met.
"What are you looking at?!" Erina seemed to have figured out Renz's thoughts.
"No! Not now!"
"This is my first time; I don't want to use these."
Renz stared at Erina, though he didn't actually have "that" in mind. But he did want to see Erina's reaction. After all, picking up a box of condoms and staring at a girl could easily lead her to misunderstand. He didn't expect Erina to be so innocent and fall for it immediately.
"Pfft, hahaha," Renz couldn't hold back his laughter and chuckled softly. "Just kidding, but speaking of which, does that mean it's okay without protection?"
"No, that's not okay either! What if... we end up with other little babies?" Erina loudly refused, her voice trailing off as she spoke. Her face flushed, and Erina involuntarily looked down at the floor. So, so, so cute! My wife! She's so, so, so cute!
Renz reached out and ruffled Erina's long golden hair. She was so cute, it would be a disservice to his hands not to mess with her hair.
"Are you sick? You're messing up my hair again," Erina bared her silvery teeth, shook her head, trying to escape Renz's "devil's grip." She reached out and grabbed him, like a fierce dragon, letting out a roar and "fiercely" biting Renz's finger.
"Are you an animal?"
"How old are you, still biting people all the time?"
Renz exclaimed, "It's going to bleed! You're going to make it bleed!"
"You're lying! I didn't really bite!" Erina was startled by his pained "yelp," but once she snapped out of it, she realized she hadn't even bitten hard!
