Chapter 341: Night Of The Dead (3)
After Su Xiaoli shattered the corrupted cultivators' bodies, a wisp of dark spiritual qi seeped from their remains, slithering upward toward the sky like a sinister shadow.
Huang Xue narrowed her eyes at the retreating energy. It pulsed with an unnatural rhythm, something foul and ancient. Her instincts screamed at her to destroy whatever that was
She wanted to follow her instincts and pursue it, destroy the dark energy before it could escape. Not to mention, something that could kill and control so many cultivators inside Starlight City was anything but ordinary.
To penetrate the heavily fortified defenses of Starlight City, slaughter dozens of cultivators, and then bend their corpses to its will? This wasn't the work of a common cultivator. This was an organized, large-scale assault… and behind it lurked a truly terrifying entity.
Unfortunately, Huang Xue didn't have the luxury to do as she wanted
The ground trembled under a new wave of footsteps. More of the undead surged toward them. Five more corpses this time, including one that radiated a suffocating pressure.
Her pupils contracted. A Return To Void cultivator had joined the horde.
Even worse, although the person was dead and lacked the refined techniques of a living expert, it still retained at least eighty percent of its original power. That was more than enough to crush any ordinary Dao Seeking cultivator, and even Huang Xue's group would struggle to handle it without preparation.
Su Xiaoli's gaze sharpened as she assessed the situation. Her grip tightened around her Suppression Fan.
"We may not be able to win," she said grimly, "but escaping might be even harder. Let's fight!"
After a moment of hesitation, she swung her fan in a wide arc. A frigid wind howled across Starlight City's streets.
The four weaker attackers, cultivators below the Return To Void realm, froze mid-charge, their bodies instantly crystallizing into statues of ice.
The Return To Void zombie barreled through the freezing gust without pause, suffering only superficial frostbite that slowed it down slightly. Its body was chipped and cracked, but its momentum barely faltered.
Still, the cold had achieved something vital: its speed had dropped by nearly half. Su Xiaoli frowned, surprised by the results of her own attack.
She had instinctively expected the zombie to dodge or shield itself, as any living being would. But this creature didn't seem to know fear, pain, or caution. It was pure aggression, stripped of all higher reasoning.
'Maybe escaping wouldn't be as difficult as I feared,' she thought bitterly.
But that was no longer an option. The zombie was already upon her.
Its nails—elongated, blackened, and razor-sharp—lunged straight for her chest, aiming to rip out her heart in a single brutal strike.
Thankfully, Huang Xue and Xue Qiang didn't let the chance that Su Xiaoli had created go to waste. An elegant sword appeared in Huang Xue's hand, and the space around her vibrated with pure sword intent.
Not only had Huang Xue's cultivation increased exponentially during the last few years, but her Sword Dao was not something that could be taken lightly.
She raised her sword and swung it down, aiming to cleave the zombie in half. At the same time, Xue Qiang hurled her spear like a flaming comet, aiming to skewer its heart.
If their opponent had been a true Return To Void cultivator, it would have easily evaded or parried their attacks. However, the zombie, driven only by a mindless urge to kill, continued its reckless assault on Su Xiaoli, completely ignoring the deadly strikes coming from Xue Qiang and Huang Xue.
Huang Xue's blade arrived first. It sliced through the spiritual qi shrouding the zombie's body without resistance. The refined sharpness of her sword intent, honed through countless years, made it seem effortless, like a hot knife cutting through butter. With a single graceful motion, she cleaved the zombie cleanly in half, dark blood and grotesque entrails spilling onto the floor below.
But the attack didn't end there.
Almost immediately after Huang Xue's strike, Xue Qiang's spear followed. Channeling her fire spiritual qi to its peak, she thrust her weapon precisely along the line Huang Xue had carved. Upon impact, an explosion of flames erupted, centered around the tip of her spear.
The already bisected corpse stood no chance. It was consumed entirely by the searing fire, reduced to little more than ash and blackened cinders within moments.
Just like before, a mass of dark spiritual qi drifted upward from the remains, ascending into the night sky.
Their fight didn't go unnoticed.
Within moments, twenty more zombies turned their pitch-black eyes toward the trio. Their stiff, unnatural movements gave way to a sudden burst of speed as they charged at them.
Su Xiaoli's expression darkened, her brows knitting tightly. "This is endless. If we stay here, we'll drown in them. Let's leave Starlight City while we still have the chance!"
Huang Xue and Xue Qiang both nodded in agreement. Although Dao Seeking realm cultivators were considered fairly strong within Starlight City, it wasn't enough against the current situation.
After all, due to the ongoing war against the Four Demon Venerables' cults, the Seven Planets region had attracted countless experts, meaning Return To Void cultivators were relatively common here. Facing even one of them was risky; being surrounded by dozens was suicide.
Before they could act, a commanding voice rang out from behind them, sharp and clear.
"Defend the ladies!"
A moment later, an explosion of force erupted from inside the restaurant. A powerful punch shattered the thick stone wall like brittle paper, sending debris flying outward. In its wake, half of the incoming zombies were obliterated, reduced to little more than mangled limbs and dark mist.
The five guards assigned to protect Su Xiaoli, Huang Xue, and Xue Qiang emerged from the broken restaurant wall like vengeful spirits. Their clothes were tattered and splattered with blood, but their auras burned fiercely, brimming with unyielding killing intent.
Having finished off the undead inside the restaurant, they quickly regrouped around the trio.
