Chapter 34: Yuki goes to the war zone
Yuki took a few days off. The clinic was also closed off for a week. I guess the clinic had consecutive holidays. I remembered the staff at that clinic. I wonder how they are doing. I will never forget the looks on the nurses' faces when they found out that Yuki and I were dating. They were like "Are you serious?"
When I came back to my room, there was Yuki looking at me with a big smile on her face. It gave me a bad premonition.
"Welcome back, Marc!”
“You're in a good mood, aren't you? Is it because you’ve come home spoiled from seeing your parents?”
“No, it's not that. I've reported to my parents. Me. I'm going to Doctors Without Borders."
“…..Are you serious?!”
"What! Even you are saying that it's impossible for me, who is a young lady, to do it, aren’t you!"
“… Is that what your parents told you?”
"...That's right. That I can't do it."
She looked down and clenched her fist in frustration. I squeezed her hand back. Yuki clung to me.
“He said he would allow me only if it was far away from the war zone. Still I'm going! Marc, write me a letter of recommendation."
“It's your decision and I respect your opinion. But I need you to promise me a few things. It's a dangerous area. I know it’s not much comfort, but I need you to protect yourself.”
I had a serious look on my face.
“I understand. I'll do whatever you say.”
"1. If you feel you are in danger, don't hesitate to run away.
2. Never be alone.
3. Call me every day.
Yuki, you will be guarded by a vampire. This is something I try not to let anyone know, so even you won't know. That way I'll be able to know how you're doing."
“Then I guess you won't need to contact me."
“I want to hear your voice. Is that bad?"
“No, I’m glad to hear it"
“And there’s not enough supplies over there. We can’t give priority to your zone. Be prepared for that.”
Yuki was happy and pleased.
*I want to go with her! But for now, I need to be patient! We'll gather supplies in a little while. I'll show up then. I want to see the doctors over there too. They need to be rewarded for their hard work. I'll bring them something sweet and if there's anything I can do to help, I'll do my best.*
"Hey, Marc. I wonder what I can do to help those in need. I guess I'll have to go over there to find out.”
“I'm grateful for the help of even one person. But the reality is surely terrible. My friend over there was lamenting that the civil war was spreading.”
I told Yuki.
“Not all lives can be saved. I’m sure you’ll see painful scenes. But that’s just how war is.”"
