Chapter 24: Mother Marie
We walked into the karaoke bar. It was dim inside.
“You can use this room.”
Leonardo said.
"It's pretty dark.”
Yuki remarked.
“Then, how about this level of lighting?”
Kazuya flipped the switch with a practiced hand.
“We have good night vision, so we don't have a problem, but how about you, young lady?”
Leonardo asked. Yuki peeked at Leonardo, saying,
"Are you a vampire too?”
She asks with sparkling eyes,
"No, I'm a different race. I'm a werewolf."
"Heh! I see. So you are in human form now. Will you transform when there is a full moon?"
"Hey, hey, Yuki. It's not polite to ask that question so soon after meeting someone for the first time.”
I shushed Yuki.
“You're a strange young lady. I can see why Marc fell in love with you, she's not afraid of us. It makes me feel a little strange when someone stares at me with such sparkling eyes and smiles like that.”
“Hey…hey hey! Leonardo!"
I got a little nervous.
“I'm fine. Don't worry so much. I won't take her. Besides, I have my own mate. If I cheat on her, I'm more afraid of what will happen afterwards.”
“Oh! I didn't know that. Well, as long as you’re happy, there is no problem.”
Kazuya says to Yuki,
“Yuki-san. Why don't you sing? We're here for karaoke after all."
"Yes, I'm sure we are. It's been a long time since I’ve done this!Let's sing!"
She seemed really excited.
Kazuya made eye contact. He seems to be saying, ‘Leave it to me to take care of Yuki. You should tell Leonardo what's happening.’
“How much information do you have over there?”
“The hunters are coming to Japan and they’re sending a professional. Our little squabble was the catalyst. I'm sorry.”
Leonardo bowed his head.
“It's a trivial matter. They want to eradicate our species. There are human absolutists in every age. In fact, some races have been exterminated already. Half-breeds are one of them. We don't see mermaids anymore. There used to be plenty of them in the sea.”
“That's right. They were not harmful to humans, but now we don't see them anymore because they were over hunted, as if eating a mermaid would make you immortal.”
Satisfied with the song, Yuki asked Kazuya,
“What kind of person is Marc's mother?”
"Hey, Yuki!"
Kazuya smiled.
“Isn't it okay? She is my beloved one whom I adored. I still love her.”
“She was free to go wherever she wanted. She came to Japan because she liked the country. She took some of the family members with her, but that was also to take care of herself.”
I said.
“Yes, that's right. From my point of view, that person was dazzling, and she adored me as a child. Her blonde hair was beautiful, and her eyes, like the clear blue sky, charmed everyone. She gave her love equally to her dependents. At that time, I didn't know that they were her dependents, but I thought they were maids and butlers, the people who took care of her and her surroundings."
Kazuya recalled."
