Chapter 46: Chapter 46 - Asia's Choice

After a simple dinner with Asia and Jeanne, Kazuya went to his room to rest and sleep a bit, cuddling with his cute saint who, of course, went to sleep with him. He wanted to take advantage of the fact that he didn't have to share her at night with any of his other "sisters"…

It happened after midnight.

Kazuya woke up at 3:14 in the morning. He was thirsty. And, to be honest, he also needed to use the bathroom, the kind of need that couldn't be ignored, no matter how much he wanted to stay in bed.

After taking care of the essentials, he headed to the kitchen. The mansion's corridors were silent, the soft light from the wall sconces casting long shadows on the carpets. As he grabbed a bottle of water, he noticed a figure in the garden, standing still, looking at the sky.

It was Asia.

The girl was there, motionless, staring at the full moon that hung alone among the clouds. The night breeze tousled her long blonde hair, and the scene had something too melancholic for that hour.

What was she doing there?

Instinctive curiosity grew in his mind, so he decided to approach. Better to make sure nothing was wrong.

"Still awake, huh?" he said, his voice sounding relaxed in the silence.

Asia turned suddenly, startled, her green eyes gleaming under the moonlight.

She was beautiful, undeniably. Her blonde hair stirred by the breeze, her delicate face, and those green eyes that seemed to hold more than they should.

But for Kazuya, beauty wasn't just appearance, and he had seen all kinds of incredible beauty considering his life as Ritsuka Fujimaru, an opinion formed in that life…

Rias? Beautiful too, of course, but always with that unsettling aura. Something dark, even beneath all the veneer of nobility and charm. He had noticed it from the first moment he saw her—it was pride, ego, and that arrogance typical of pureblood demons. Not the kind of thing that sparked his interest.

Asia was different.

Her aura was clean, almost too naive for this world. Pure, warm, and though he was the type of man who kept his feelings well-guarded, there was something comforting in her presence.

If someone asked him who was more beautiful, Rias or Asia, the answer would come without hesitation: Asia. Not for her appearance, but for the kind heart she had.

Asia stared at him, surprised, her hands clasped in front of her chest.

"Kazuya-san… Did I wake you? I'm sorry, I—"

"Relax…" Kazuya cut her off with a casual wave of his hand as he approached. "I woke up because I was thirsty…"

He leaned against the balcony railing, looking at her with a slight smile.

"And stop calling me Kazuya-san. Just use Kazuya. I don't care about that kind of formality…"

She hesitated, furrowing her brow slightly.

"But… Shuten-san said it's an essential formality here in Japan…"

He let out a low chuckle, shaking his head.

"While she's right about that kind of formality in Japan, it depends a lot on closeness… And besides, not every Japanese person cares about it. Personally, I don't mind a pretty girl like you calling me by my name…"

Asia blushed immediately, her eyes darting away, but she quickly shook her head.

"N-No, I can't. It feels like I'm getting special treatment… Everyone here in the mansion treats you with the utmost respect, Kazuya-san… If I called you by your name, wouldn't it be strange?"

Kazuya felt like sighing. Her innocence was almost disarming. It was like dealing with a fairy-tale character lost in a rotten world. He had already told her earlier, when Jeanne brought her to the mansion, that he didn't care about formalities, but Shuten Douji had jokingly said it was rude and that she should add "san" when addressing him, and Asia took it very seriously…

"Then how about I let you call me by my name because you're my friend?" he suggested with a lazy smile.

Asia blinked, surprised.

"Friend…?"

Her eyes went blank for a moment, and her expression lost its sparkle. It was as if she didn't know what the word meant. As if that concept wasn't part of her life.

"Kazuya-san… you want to be… my friend?" she asked, her voice soft and her head tilted, as if afraid of her own question.

Since Jeanne-san brought her to this mansion, she had started to believe that maybe, just maybe, she had finally found a home. But deep down, the fear never went away. There was always that whispering voice saying it was all temporary, too fragile to last. Even with Jeanne's kind words saying otherwise… part of her still thought that at any moment, it could all fall apart. Like it was too good to be true.

On the other hand, Kazuya thought that expression didn't suit her. It shouldn't. Girls like Asia shouldn't carry that kind of emptiness in their eyes.

"Of course…" he replied, a frown appearing briefly. "Or do you not want to?"

The emptiness vanished. It was replaced by panic and a bit of fear.

"N-No! It's just that…" She lowered her face, hiding her expression. "That someone like you would want to be my friend is…"

"And what's wrong with that?" Kazuya raised an eyebrow. "You're beautiful, kind, good-hearted… Who in their right mind wouldn't want you around?"

Asia slowly lifted her gaze, her green eyes wide and glistening. Tears clung to her eyelids, but she didn't let them fall. A bitter smile appeared.

"I… Kazuya-san… Do you know my story?"

"Sort of…" he replied casually, as if they were talking about the weather. "I just know they kicked you out of the church because of that devil you healed."

Asia trembled, and he noticed.

"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to…" He placed a hand on her shoulder, the touch light but firm, like someone who wasn't just doing it out of politeness. "I just want to be your friend. I don't care about the past. What matters to me is that you seem like someone fun to have around."

She bit her lower lip, her eyes shining even more.

"But I don't know how… I've never lived outside the church before."

"Easy to fix." Kazuya shrugged. "You learn. Jeanne or I will teach you how, like we did before. You'll do fine…"

Asia let out a small, hiccuped laugh. It was a light sound, weightless, as if something had loosened inside her for the first time in years.

"Thank you… Kazuya-san."

He smiled, looking away at the moon.

"No need to thank me…"

Silence settled for a moment.

Kazuya looked at the girl and gave a faint, discreet but sincere smile. Accepting Asia into the mansion hadn't been part of any grand plan, since it wasn't even part of the mission he had given to Jalter and Jeanne. It was a chance occurrence outside his plans. But one thing was certain: he simply couldn't turn his back on someone so innocent and pure in such a corrupt world.

It was hard to explain, even to himself… but something about that girl made him want to protect her, not out of obligation, but by choice. Maybe it was exactly that purity he wanted to preserve, as if it were one of the few things in this world worth protecting.

Come to think of it, with everything that had happened—Sirzechs knocking on his door and getting beaten up by him, and the meeting with Azazel right after—he hadn't even stopped to talk to Asia like he was doing now…

He wanted to be sure whether she would stay here with them or leave…

"But Asia…" he said suddenly, his voice cutting through the silence, making her look up attentively. "I'm warning you now. Being my friend isn't something simple…"

He paused, looking at her seriously.

"As you can imagine… I'm a hero. And heroes always have enemies. If you're by my side, there's a chance they'll target you."

Asia's eyes widened, her heart beating faster.

"And from what I heard from your conversation with Jeanne, your dream is to have a normal life, right?" he continued, his tone softer, almost sad. "I won't lie… if you stay close to me, you won't have that."

In truth, he wanted to say more.

But for a moment, his throat went dry as he looked at her… that fragile expression, her eyes full of hope for a normal life, a life that so many teenagers took for granted without a second thought… he hesitated.

And before he could find the words to continue, it was Asia who spoke, and this time, the surprise came with a pang in his chest.

She smiled again. Not like before. It was a small, sad smile, carrying something no girl her age should know: bitterness.

"I… I don't think I'll ever have a normal life, Kazuya-san. Not anymore…" she said, her voice trembling but firm. "You're like me, aren't you? You also have a gift from God…"

Kazuya stayed silent for a moment.

"Yes…" he finally replied, calmly. "Like you, I also received a gift from God. But… mine doesn't heal. It destroys. It takes lives…"

His face held an impassive expression as he spoke. Asia let out a short, joyless laugh, but also without resentment.

"It really was impossible to start wishing for a normal life, wasn't it?" she said, more to herself than to him. Her voice now had a soft, resigned melancholy… but also a touch of acceptance.

"Yes… we're chosen people, Asia… Unlike others, we were born with this gift and power. And, as people say, power always attracts more power. It's impossible for us to live like normal people if those around us would be in danger," Kazuya said, nodding.

"But you already know that, don't you?" He paused and narrowed his eyes.

"Yes…" She nodded. "I knew, deep down, but I just…"

"You're afraid of giving up your dream," Kazuya finished for her.

Asia's eyes widened.

"It's a fact I can't change easily. If you're my friend, you won't have a normal life anymore. You still had hope of living like an ordinary person, but that chance will be lost if you choose to walk by my side," he declared, before continuing. "But at the same time… you also want this, don't you? I know you got along well with Jeanne and the others, right? I'm sure you don't want to be alone anymore, do you?"

Hearing his words, Asia lowered her head, soft sobs escaping her lips.

"I… Kazuya-san… I… it really is impossible, isn't it?" she asked, her voice breaking. She also used his name, a sign that she had finally accepted that the dream of a normal life was impossible.

"It is…" Kazuya confirmed, looking at the girl beside him, who stared at the ground as if there was something interesting there.

Silence settled. Seconds turned into minutes.

Five minutes passed until Asia looked up from the ground and met his gaze again.

"I don't have a choice… do I?" she asked sadly.

"We always have a choice," Kazuya said, closing his eyes. "No matter what, there's always a choice. The question is: are we ready for the consequences? It might lead to death… but sometimes, death itself is better than the other option."

Asia looked at him with an expressionless gaze. Then she tilted her head slightly before smiling, and this time, the smile was sincere.

"Then I choose to accept your offer," she said softly. "Maybe I can't have a normal life… but that doesn't mean I can't have friends."

"Good choice," Kazuya replied with a small smile. "Our adventures won't be easy, Asia…"

"I know… but I'll stay with you all," she said, nodding, and he laughed.

They stayed a while, watching the sky.

"I think you'd better go to bed, Asia," he said calmly.

"Yes… but what about you?" she asked as she stood up.

"I'll stay a bit longer," he replied, and she just nodded before walking away, heading back to sleep.

Kazuya stayed there, looking at the sky for a while longer.

A sigh escaped his lips — it was the first time he'd had this kind of "sentimental" conversation with someone, except in his life as Ritsuka Fujimaru. He didn't know how to feel about it. Part of him wanted Asia to choose to be his friend and stay with them so he could protect her from this world, but another part wished she would want to leave and have a normal life, because she deserved it.

Anyway, now he would have to include her in his plans in a more active way.

As he was about to leave, he sensed someone approaching the mansion.

(A/N: Author's Note

This chapter was, by far, one of the hardest I've written so far. Not because of technical difficulties or setting issues — but because I wanted to do justice to a character who, in my opinion, always deserved more attention and respect within the High School DxD universe: Asia Argento.

Since her very first appearance in the anime and light novel, Asia has always carried that aura of purity, kindness, and emotional fragility that made her beloved by many. But behind that innocent demeanor is a broken girl, marked by rejection, fear, and loneliness. I wanted to bring that duality to the surface — the girl who dreams of a normal life, but deep down knows that maybe, just maybe, it will never be hers.

It was really difficult to balance this. To preserve her sweetness and naivety without making her too gullible, and at the same time, to show the sadness she carries without stripping away her character. I truly hope I managed to capture Asia's essence faithfully here.

So, to you, reader — especially if you know DxD well — I'd love to ask: did I succeed in conveying the true Asia Argento? Did she feel like the Asia you know, or did I stray too far? I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts. Because to me, characters like her deserve that kind of care.

Thank you for reading this far. This chapter drained me, but it also left me deeply satisfied. Because, in the end, stories are about people — and tonight, I feel like I wrote something genuinely human.

See you in the next one.
