Chapter 258: Divine Energy is a curse!?
It wasn't that Zarek didn't consider that Mirabella wouldn't notice him, but he thought that only after devouring the divine energy would she be alerted.
But it seems that was not the case; instead, the moment Zarek returned Alice to her true form of divine energy, she was already alerted.
This made many of his plans fail, but this had very little consequence to him.
Because Zarek was essentially immortal already, he could adapt to the divine energy, and if he instantly died, he could always turn back his body's time and recover again.
So he didn't even have to worry about instant death.
As Zarek shot through the tunnel and devoured the Divine Energy in a single gulp, for a moment, he didn't feel a single change inside him.
"Hmm?"
Just then, Zarek's entire body began emitting a bright golden light, his entire body shone in it, even coming through his eye sockets, and mouth, and veins bulged throughout his body like coiled snakes.
It felt like Zarek could explode at any time, and this was 100% accurate, he could truly explode right now.
Every fiber of his being was screaming at him; the overwhelming Divine Energy was too much.
The <Devour> skill didn't help either because it was instantly broken down the moment it entered his body.
Zarek froze on the spot and then fell to the ground with a large thud, rolling around the ground with painful groans escaping his lips.
His body started to crack like a vase, and golden light seeped out from it.
Suddenly, a rumble sounded and the ground parted ways, revealing Mirabella, who had already caught up to him.
"You really swallowed all that Divine Energy?" Mirabella's lips quivered in disbelief. For a moment, she even forgot to act, looking at the state of Zarek with a stunned expression.
"I created Alice with the countless Divine Energy that I had gathered from the human race for more than sixty years because my body couldn't take it, but this guy really devoured it."
She landed on the ground and shook her head with a sigh.
Even though she seemed to be wearing a blindfold, the world was even clearer to her than to a person who had eyes.
Her head tilted towards Zarek with a face full of disdain in her demeanour.
"I thought he was planning something big, but he is nothing more than a weakling." She shook her head. "Divine Energy is not only a blessing, but also a curse."
Mirabella rolled down her sleeve to hide a small crack that had appeared in her arm.
At first, she too thought of herself as invincible in the world, simply because she could turn the people's prayers to Divine Energy, and she abused it thoroughly, especially after coming to the sacred temple, which allowed her to do so much more than she could possibly imagine with the people's prayers.
Because she realised those who came to pray here actually didn't send their fate anywhere and just lingered here, so with some minor tweaking, she was able to direct it all to her.
Her strength grew day by day.
But she soon realised a terrifying disaster as well.
Her body started to break down because of having too much divine energy; that's how Alice was born, she was nothing but pure amalgamation of Divine Energy and this is why she grew desperate for Zarek as well.
He might have a solution for her to be able to withstand the divine energy because he seemed to adapt to everything from her observation, adapting and evolving to grow stronger by the minute.
It was simply terrifying to watch.
At that moment, as she looked at Zarek like the gaze of a predator, she was already imagining her to have a power that was similar to his and finally withstand the Divine Energy.
But now that she looked at Zarek, who was soon about to explode, she couldn't help being disappointed.
"I underestimated Divine Energy and overestimated your power," Mirabella murmured to herself, a little regretful at heart, but it was nothing for her since she couldn't use it anyway, so there was very little use she had for Divine Energy.
As for losing Alice, she was indifferent to such a thing; she was but a mere creation of her Divine Energy.
But still, Mirabella's curiosity never left her as she watched Zarek's demise.
Zarek was a single touch away from exploding from the Divine Energy as it coursed through him, his body expanding to an unnatural form and cracks spreading everywhere around his skin. The blinding golden light could fry any normal person's eyes if they even looked.
Of course, Melissa couldn't in any way be termed as normal at all.
"Hmm?" Suddenly, she paused; she pinched her hand as if trying to discern reality.
Because right in front of her, Zarek returned to his previous form as if he was reversing his time itself.
This was simply a miracle. Right in front of their eyes, Zarek had completely returned to his ordinary self without a single scratch.
Golden light still seeped out of his body, cracks appeared like shattered cobweb glass; however, he was in a much better condition now.
Then suddenly, he stood up, looking at Mirabella and spoke with a deep voice:
"I am surprised that you didn't attack me in my most vulnerable position."
"How are you alive…!?" Mirabella pointed with her palm, and a burst of divine energy shot towards him.
Zarek only smiled facing the attack as he slowly opened his mouth, then he ate it.
Mirabella looked at this with wide eyes.
"Hmm, my body still hasn't recovered, as my body is still actively on the verge of breaking down, but fighting might solve it," Zarek muttered.
His pale skin was turning golden by the second; even his face, his skin, everything was turning gold.
With this transformation, his presence was also skyrocketing through the air, reaching even greater than Mirabella in front of him.
"This feeling, it's amazing," Zarek murmured as he flickered towards her while she was still flabbergasted.
Bang!
The space tore apart as the terrifying force of his flicker from his raw strength caused the entire cave to rumble, and it inched away from reaching Mirabella.
