Chapter 6: Playing Again

Tanaka's face suddenly paled the moment a huge and burly man opened the door with an angry snarl.

"Kid, don't you know that this is almost 1 AM in the morning and you're knocking on the door? It is an abomination to disturb a coach in the middle of the night."

Tanaka's gaze trembled.

"I — I'm looking for Coach Damien."

The man's eyes squinted as if trying to figure Tanaka out.

"I am coach Damien. What is so important that you have to disturb several sleeping coaches in this school?"

A certain fuel of boldness entered Tanaka's body.

"I want to play again. I need your permission to be a part of Seagull once again."

Coach Damien suddenly realized. He wiped his eyes and stared at Tanaka then he said.

"So, you are that kid? Isuryburg asked you to leave, instead you left your things behind, running away and not returning until after two days?"

"It wasn't my intention to stay for two days. I was kinda stuck."

Coach Damien stared at Tanaka for a while and said.

"The match two days ago caused Seagull balling School to lose a lot of score points in the champion's league, and anymore fall-out or decrease in score points then Seagull is done. You couldn't even guard against your ball on that day. You did not even make any attempt to tackle it back. When your teammates shouted for a pass, you actually ignored them. These are errors that cannot go unpunished. We have overlooked them but now, no more."

Tanaka's eyes were pleading at this moment.

"Was Coach Isuryburg really fired because of me?"

"Fired? No he wasn't, he is just on suspension. I'm only here temporarily to supervise your teammates. The thing is, he dismissed you and did not make sure you reached home successfully to your parents. And hearing that you went missing is definitely a fault of his. That being said, he was careless."

Tanaka nodded, somewhat relieved.

"So Coach, can I play."

"Of course not. Your recent plays have put the school in jeopardy and we do not want to take the risk again or we won't get the necessary funds to run this business. Did you forget that the Champion's league funds this company? And the more score points we lose disconnects us from their financial aid."

Tanaka stared at the man, unwilling. He lingered, not even knowing what to say next or how to answer. But then as if Tanaka was suddenly inspired, he said:

"What if I were tested somehow? Not like the main game, but an arranged game. If I mess up there, then you can send me home to my parents."

Coach Damien's eyes narrowed.

"What a child, giving such a condition…" he thought for a while and said. "But you're actually right about that. Disturbing me this early morning should be a way of telling me that you've improved within these two days you went missing. Do not disappoint me."

Tanaka smiled in glee.

"So, I can go back to the room with my roommates?"

Coach Damien sighed. "Yeah sure… for now."

And the wooden door was slammed shut, sending echoes, rippling through the empty hallways.

[What a fool. I thought you were smart enough. If I hadn't reminded you of a test, you would have not suggested anything. So much for rewarding you with a Calculative Mind]

Tanaka's excitement was halted mid-way.

"So what if you reminded me, Aèos? It is your duty to guide me anyways so, fuck off."

Tanaka rushed back to the boys who actually waited.

Nishida was stunned to see the smile on Tanaka's face.

"So did he agree?"

Tanaka sighed.

"I have to play a makeup game to prove my worth."

"Technically, your position here is at stake. Almost as if you are hanging on a fragile balance. Tanaka, how do you deal with your terrible playing skills?" Nishida asked.

"You ask him." James blurted out.

Only Isaac did not say a word, staring at Tanaka like he's making a very big mistake.

"Fine, let's go back to the room."

This time, Tanaka followed them, having been away from this same room for almost two days. Now he wanted to crash into bed and just fall into a deep sleep. He was actually giving in to fatigue.

However, he busied himself.

'Open system.'

Runes appeared in his line of sight.

Previously, he was confident. But now seeing his stats, his confidence was boosted to a new degree. Although the figures were minor, it was significant. There's a huge gap between those with 0 talent points and those with 5 talent points.

Not just that, Tanaka's speed had improved dramatically.

5 points in strength makes a big difference now in football. Tanaka wouldn't be so pathetic in the game, at least the outcome should be enough to secure his spot in Seagull balling School.

'This is right, this is right. I'll show them how not so pathetic I am. I'll let them have a feel of what it's like to be glorious."

But then —

[Don't get too full of yourself. Even with these stats, you might still fail woefully. The odds are negligible. But my point is, do not think you've made it just because you you attained a petty attribute points or talent points]

"Yes Aèos, remind me! Keep reminding me!" Tanaka snapped.

And Nishida turned along with James and Isaac.

"Who's Aèos?" Isaac asked.
