Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Successful Escape
The two of them finally managed to escape danger.
Looking back, it was nothing short of a miracle!
If they had to do it all over again, the outcome might have been different.
"Miss Su, thank you for what you did just now," Gao Fei said weakly. "If you hadn't pulled me back at the critical moment, I would have fallen to my death by now." Recalling the recent event, Gao Fei felt a surge of fear. It had been too dangerous, and he had nearly been on a one-way trip to hell—with no return ticket.
"No," Su Xiaorou shook her head. "I should be the one thanking you. If it weren't for you today, I would definitely have died in that elevator. Oh right, I still don't know your name?"
"My name is Gao Fei," he said.
"Hmm, that's a nice name, pleasant to the ear, and easy to pronounce," Su Xiaorou smiled and said.
"Tap tap tap..."
At that moment, a group of people ran up from below, each of them panting and sweating profusely. When they saw Su Xiaorou unharmed, their suspended hearts finally settled. Thankfully, Su Xiaorou was alright, otherwise... they would all be in big trouble.
"Miss, it's so good you're okay, I was really scared just now," a middle-aged man sighed with relief. "Come on, let's hurry and take the Miss to the hospital." Although Su Xiaorou didn't show any visible injuries, it was safer to take her to the hospital for a check-up. What if there were internal injuries?
"Take him to the hospital, too," Su Xiaorou pointed at Gao Fei lying on the ground.
"Yes, yes, let's take this... security guard to the hospital too," the middle-aged man said, recognizing Gao Fei's profession from his uniform.
A group of people rushed over and carried Su Xiaorou and Gao Fei away from the scene.
...
On the way to the hospital, Gao Fei honorably fell asleep. He just couldn't help it—he was too exhausted, and it was a miracle he had held on until now.
When he woke up again, it was evening. His hands had been wrapped in bandages, which were faintly stained with fresh blood. Perhaps because of the medication, the wounds in his palms seemed a bit less painful.
"Oh? You're awake?" A young nurse pushed open the door and came in, holding some medicine.
"Perfect timing, hurry up and process my discharge papers," Gao Fei said as he sat up from the hospital bed, put on his shoes, and walked towards the door.
"Hey! You can't be discharged with your wounds like this," the nurse called out after him.
"It's just a little scratch on the palm, nothing serious!" Gao Fei said indifferently. "In a few days, it will be healed." Gao Fei, who came from a farming family, grew up working the fields with his parents. He was no stranger to suffering and injury; this was nothing to him, and he didn't want to waste his time in the hospital.
"Nothing serious?" The nurse couldn't help but laugh. "Do you know that your palms are abraded severely, in some places even the bone is exposed? If you don't get proper treatment, you might end up with complications... Hey, don't go, why won't you listen to advice?"
No matter how much the nurse tried to stop him or reason with him, Gao Fei wouldn't listen. Finally, under his persistence, the hospital had no choice but to process his discharge.
"I'm off," Gao Fei waved at the nurse and then walked steadily out of the hospital.
"What a hateful guy," the nurse stamped her foot angrily. "His palms are injured so badly, and he doesn't even care, so unreasonable! Wait until his condition worsens, then see if he regrets it or not." This nurse's name was Ouyang Lan, who just started her job. She was kind-hearted and well-liked in the hospital, valued by the leadership. She despised people who neglected their health, viewing them as wasting their lives and beyond reasoning.
After stewing in anger for a bit, Ouyang Lan left huffily. Little did she expect, she would encounter Gao Fei again in the future, and a lot would happen between them, but that's a story for another time and not mentioned here.
...
After leaving the hospital, Gao Fei took the bus home. It was already 7 p.m., and the company had closed for the day. Even if he went back, he wouldn't be able to get through the main gate.
Once home, he had a simple dinner and then began his practice.
The night passed without incident.
The next morning, he was woken by the alarm clock. After a good stretch, a night's practice made him feel even stronger, and the injuries on his palms seemed to have improved a bit.
Seeing there was still time, Gao Fei made himself breakfast. After eating his fill, he set off for work at the company.
"Gao Fei!? What are you doing here?" Niu Gang asked in complete surprise. "Aren't you supposed to be in the hospital?"
"I was discharged last night," Gao Fei casually replied. "It's just a little skin abrasion on my hands, no need to stay in the hospital."
"Gao Fei, I heard you saved Miss Su's life yesterday?" Niu Gang's eyes sparkled with intense envy and admiration. "Why don't I ever stumble upon such good fortune? Playing the hero and saving a beauty, that's something I've always dreamt about."
"Forget about it," Gao Fei rolled his eyes. "I almost died yesterday. If I had a choice, I would rather give that opportunity to you."
"Hypocritical." Niu Gang scorned Gao Fei with a glance, "You're just so hypocritical! You must be over the moon after saving Miss Su, but you put on this act like it doesn't matter at all. You are the epitome of hypocrisy! I despise you!"
"Fine, believe what you want to believe. It's not like you would trust anything I say now anyway." Gao Fei dropped the remark and headed toward the duty room.
Niu Gang gave the retreating back of Gao Fei the middle finger, "Hypocritical jerk."
...
The duty room.
Gao Fei had just sat down and hadn't even had time to take a sip of water when he heard Niu Gang calling him, "Gao Fei, come out, someone is looking for you." Someone is looking for me? Who could it be? Gao Fei stood up and walked out only to freeze in his tracks. Standing opposite was a beautiful woman, it was Su Xiaorou.
"Gao Fei! When were you discharged from the hospital?" Su Xiaorou hurried over, "With injuries as severe as yours, how could you be discharged?" Su Xiaorou had undergone a full body checkup at the hospital yesterday, and after making sure there were no issues, she was discharged immediately. Before she left, she had visited Gao Fei, who was still sleeping at the time. Afterward, she went home. Early this morning, she drove back to the hospital to visit Gao Fei, only to find out that he had been discharged! Su Xiaorou guessed that he might come to work, so she drove straight to the company. Upon inquiring with the security, sure enough, Gao Fei was at the company, and that's the entire sequence of events.
"It's just a little abrasion on the palm, it's nothing." Gao Fei shook his head nonchalantly.
"Really nothing?"
"Do I look like there's something wrong?"
"If you are fine, then I'm relieved." Su Xiaorou nodded lightly, "So, to thank you for saving my life, I would like to invite you to dinner tonight."
"Ah?" Gao Fei was taken aback, "There's really no need..."
"It's settled then, I'll see you after work." With that, Su Xiaorou walked away in her high heels. True to her status as the company president, her decisiveness was apparent. In just a few words, she arranged dinner for the evening, not leaving Gao Fei any chance to refuse.
Niu Gang was green with envy after hearing Su Xiaorou was taking Gao Fei out for dinner. His eyes reddened as he said, "Gao Fei, you are on a roll. Being favored by Miss Su, you're bound to rise high in the future. Just don't forget to give me a hand when you do."
"It's just a meal, look how envious you are. Is it really necessary?" Gao Fei laughed.
"That's the company's heiress! If she invited me to dinner, I'd gladly take ten years off my life." Niu Gang declared, "No, make that twenty!"
"You're talking nonsense more and more. Alright now, go on your patrol." After saying that, Gao Fei walked away.
...
Time flew, and in a blink, it was time to clock out.
Su Xiaorou appeared on time in the underground parking lot and waved to Gao Fei, "Let's go, it's time for dinner."
"Ah... I am not off work yet..." Gao Fei, being a security guard, finished his shift later than the office staff.
"I've made a special exception for you to leave early today, let's go." Su Xiaorou said with a smile. As the CEO, she certainly had the authority to let Gao Fei off work early, and no one would dare object. That was the power of her position.
With Su Xiaorou having put it that way, it would seem inappropriate for Gao Fei to hesitate further. "Well then, please just wait a moment; I'll go change my clothes." Two minutes later, Gao Fei emerged, dressed in different attire.
"Get in!" Su Xiaorou personally opened the car door for Gao Fei, a privilege not many could enjoy.
Gao Fei ducked his head and got into the car. It was his first time ever sitting in a Ferrari. As expected of a car worth millions, it had a spacious interior and comfortable seating. Most importantly, the car's exterior was very cool. If it were driven on the roads, it was sure to attract onlookers.
Su Xiaorou started the car smoothly, released the handbrake, and as she pressed the gas pedal, the Ferrari darted forward.
No sooner had Gao Fei and Su Xiaorou left than Niu Gang emerged from behind a pillar. He stared in the direction the Ferrari disappeared, his eyes reddened with envy: "Why is that guy Gao Fei so lucky! What does he have that warrants such good fortune! Why?!" At that moment, Niu Gang felt a tinge of hate for Gao Fei.
That's the thing with people; they find it hard to see others living better than themselves, especially those of equal status. Niu Gang used to feel somewhat superior to Gao Fei, being a local while Gao Fei was from out of town. But now... that superiority had completely shattered, making it hard for Niu Gang to accept all at once.
...
The red Ferrari sped down the road like a streak of red flame, full of shock and beauty from afar.
"Where shall we go for dinner?" Su Xiaorou asked while skillfully driving the Ferrari.
"Anywhere is fine," Gao Fei replied.
"Do you like seafood?" Seeing Gao Fei nod, Su Xiaorou smiled, "Great, we'll go for seafood then!"
