Chapter 1430: What To Do...
Breakfast continued on after that with a few more questions from everyone seated, like how they decided to grow the Empire into the insanely powerful country it was today to what got the Empress ready to just... settle down like this.
You would assume that they would have sequestered themselves off in a mountain somewhere and just lived a peaceful, quiet life all on their lonesome, but apparently Lady Theresa had decided to make things interesting by pushing the Empress around and keeping her from attempting to just settle down.
It was a very nice way of saying that the wooden Elf had bullied the giant Devil futanari into meddling in this world's affairs before she began to actively guide the Empress to take on some other wives to fulfill her needs.
That portion of the conversation was rather... 'fun' considering most of us weren't too keen on hearing about how 'powerful' the Empress was in bed - and how the ailments Lady Theresa faced hindered her ability to fulfill her 'duty' to the Empress at night - hence why the wooden Elf told her to seek out other women to get her needs met.
What started as a way to attempt to distance herself from the Empress and have her live her life as best she could without being weighed down by someone who would eventually become incapable of 'loving' her instead became this odd yet functional dynamic where things clearly worked out.
I'll admit that the very proud looks on all of the Empress' wives faces made it rather clear that the 'power' Lady Theresa described was very real, and it was something that made me look at Leone in a bit of a new light... one that definitely wasn't something I was supposed to think...
Because if Leone was already that 'powerful' herself, and her Mom is just... her but two times as big - body wise, I mean - then does that mean that her 'power' is scaled upwards as well..?
It was the sort of thing that had my mind drifting to dangerous territory as I tried to imagine what that would feel like and if I could take it... with the answer being 'yes' because it would be so painful that I would love every damn second of it... and that wasn't something I should be thinking about.
That was the point where breakfast began to get a little 'odd' and we started drifting through different topics to right our heads, since clearly we weren't responsible enough to not pervade something like a backstory.
One such topic that we began to discuss was far more important since it concerned the mercurial future we were facing instead of the set in stone past that had already happened, and as such it was something I cared about more.
"Are there any missions or tasks that we need to fulfill going forwards? Things that we are meant to be responsible for on a regular basis?"
A quick question derailed breakfast from something relaxed to something more 'suffocating' as everyone turned towards me immediately, each of the powerful people sitting down for breakfast giving me a different look.
Even just from my direct family the looks were extremely diverse; Mom was narrowing her eyes and weighing things in her mind, Mother Ria was calmly carving her pancakes into smaller portions for herself while looking between all of us, and Mother was just smiling wryly as she switched between us and them.
Then there was the hesitance in Lady Lorelei's eyes, the indifference on the Demon Wolf's face, the somewhat stern Dragon and of course the Empress, who leaned forwards and rested her chin on her hands as she 'looked' at us.
"Obligations..? I could definitely think of something, and I imagine the one who has a real answer is the Demoness sitting right there, but... There are many things expected of you four, you understand that, right?"
"I do, which is why I am asking. I am inclined to accept the offer from Lord Belian where we would take ownership over one of the Three Kingdoms that we conquered. Rebuilding it and turning it from the rubble it is now into something glorious and worthwhile of being apart of the Empire."
Mom was the one to respond first, her eyes fixated on Jahi as she said "Doing so would imply your desire to carve your own path instead of preparing yourself to take over the March. Is this just Katherine's desires or is it your own as well?"
The 'contrast' between the two Demoness' was on full display as Jahi just continued to eat even as she was asked something so important, though I doubt anyone expected much more from her since we were dealing with family instead of strangers.
"I believe you stated it yourself; you have no plans of croaking anytime soon, and even with the Fiends being here I sincerely doubt anything happens... so why bother waiting a century or three when I can just do it myself?"
Jahi was nonchalant with her reply, something that made most of us at the table smile wryly while the rest just pursed their lips and studied her, though the decision was ultimately between her and Mom.
The seriousness faded immediately at that as Mom just leaned back and shrugged, looking towards her wife for a moment before saying "Well, fine with me. Not like I give a damn what the rest of the riffraff say anyways; you'll always be an Asmodia no matter what happens. And at least I can actually teach someone who cares about me! Lakshmi loves her Mom whereas you were always so damn indifferent!"
And then instantly the question was pushed aside with an equally mercurial answer to the future we were facing, though I had to admit that the immediate pivot over to what Jahi was like as a baby and how 'indignant' Mom was about the difference between her two Demoness daughters was definitely amusing.
Even more so since it dragged the rest of the table into 'heated' debate over who's child had been the most 'insufferable' and troublesome compared to who had been the greatest, sweetest baby ever to exist in all worlds...
Funnily enough the consensus seemed to land on Leone and me for the two separate 'families', though I shut the 'debate' between who had been 'better' down immediately since neither side actually knew the other at those times.
Chaotic could barely describe the random flaring of passion inside of the dining hall thanks to this discussion, with Lady Yusa threatening Lady Fenyras multiple times whenever the emotionless twins were brought up while Lady Igna defended Dante a handful of times... much to the Dragonkin's mild embarrassment.
