Chapter 36: Chapter 36: A New Partner Joins
"This is the Vermilion Gym Badge. Although the battle didn't go as I expected… I admit defeat."
Recalling the frustrating battle, Lt. Surge's face twitched slightly, but he still handed the orange badge shaped like a flower to Kazuki.
"That Magnemite of yours is really well-trained. If there's a chance, I'd love to exchange tips on raising Electric-type Pokémon with you."
Laughing heartily, Lt. Surge slapped Kazuki's shoulder with his thick hand. As someone who admired toughness, he naturally respected someone like Kazuki, who had both guts and strength.
Right… right? Holding the orange badge in his hands, with Magnemite floating aimlessly beside him, Kazuki's eyes wandered, unsure how to respond.
If he told the truth now—that Magnemite wasn't actually his Pokémon, and that the gym leader had been defeated by a wild Pokémon—would Lt. Surge pass out on the spot?
Better not risk it.
Kazuki glanced to the side, where Raichu, covered in bandages and with half its face wrapped up, was still standing shakily, stubbornly holding its head high.
"…Is it really okay?"
"Don't underestimate us. Scars are a man's medals. We'll remember this loss, and next time we meet, you'd better be ready!" Lt. Surge flashed a toothy grin and gave Kazuki a thumbs-up. Raichu, following its trainer's lead, bared its teeth and raised a paw toward Magnemite.
However, Magnemite didn't react at all. In fact, its eyes hadn't even looked at Raichu the entire time. It simply turned and floated toward the gym's exit.
"..."
"Well, if there's nothing else, we'll be going now!"
Seeing Magnemite drifting further away, Kazuki didn't have time to continue the awkward conversation with Lt. Surge. He grabbed Sabrina's hand and hurried after Magnemite.
As the figures of the young boy and girl disappeared into the distance, Lt. Surge placed a large hand on Raichu's head and ruffled its fur. "Don't be too upset. If you lose to an opponent, just win next time."
"Rai… chu…"
"Haha, I know you're frustrated. Once you're healed, we'll start an ultimate, hellish training regimen… Don't regret it later."
"Rai-chu Rai-chu!" Raichu bumped its orange fist against Lt. Surge's, and as the two were psyching themselves up, the female subordinate suddenly rushed in, slightly out of breath, and reported:
"Boss, there's a call for you."
Hearing this, Lt. Surge frowned slightly. Without even straightening up, he waved his hand dismissively. "Tell them to call back later. I'm busy right now."
"But…" The female subordinate didn't retreat as usual. Instead, she spoke with a serious expression, "It's the League calling. And from the sound of it, this matter is urgent."
…
"So… what is it doing now?"
Kazuki scratched the back of his head, watching the gray sphere spin aimlessly in mid-air.
After following Magnemite out of the gym and running over a kilometer, it suddenly seemed to lose direction, stopping and floating in place. Its large eyes showed no sign of thought.
Kazuki had tried to communicate with it, but Magnemite barely reacted to external stimuli. Aside from occasionally emitting a few meaningless electrical sounds, it didn't say anything.
Helpless, Kazuki turned to Sabrina for help:
"Sabrina, can you use telepathy to sense what Magnemite is thinking?"
Sabrina nodded slightly and placed a hand on the screw atop Magnemite's head. Her eyes glowed with psychic energy.
After a short while, she let go and concluded, "There's… nothing inside."
Nothing inside? As in, its brain is empty? This little guy… doesn't seem too bright.
Perhaps unable to hold back any longer, one of the Poké Balls on Kazuki's belt began to shake violently. Then, with a red light, the black-armored beast stomped onto the ground.
Lairon looked up at Kazuki with crimson eyes, as if looking at an idiot, and opened her mouth:
"Lair, Lair. (Didn't you follow that magnet to find the Vermilion Gym? Now that you've won, why are you still following it?)"
Kazuki's eyes widened as he suddenly realized, "Oh, right! Why am I still following it? Oh no, I've become an idiot!"
He smacked his forehead with a loud thud, making Lairon question her own judgment. How had she ended up with someone like this?
"Lair, Lair. (Since we've come this far, why not just catch it? At least this trip won't be a waste.)"
Lairon's red eyes turned to the floating sphere. Although she hadn't participated in the gym battle, she had watched the entire fight from inside her Poké Ball. That magnet might not be the brightest, but its combat ability was decent enough. She didn't mind it joining the team.
"It has to be willing, though. The problem is, I don't even know how to communicate with it…" Kazuki was tempted by Lairon's suggestion, but as he said, without solving the communication issue, catching it was out of the question.
Or maybe… he could start with something Magnemite was interested in…
After some thought, Kazuki opened his backpack and pulled out some leftover Pokéblocks. In theory, Pokéblocks were edible for Pokémon like Magnemite, but some individuals might only be interested in electricity.
Opening the sealed bag, the sweet aroma immediately filled the air. Magnemite, which had been spinning in place, seemed to catch the scent and turned its head, floating over unsteadily.
It's reacting! So it's not one of those picky traditionalists. Relieved, Kazuki placed the opened Pokéblocks on the ground and waited for Magnemite to approach.
Since it didn't have a mouth, Magnemite couldn't eat Pokéblocks like most Pokémon. Instead, after approaching the Pokéblocks, its single eye glowed blue, and a bolt of electricity struck the blocks.
Under the electric current, the Pokéblocks quickly melted into a syrup-like liquid, which Magnemite then absorbed into its body using its magnets.
Judging from its expression… it seemed pretty satisfied?
Watching Magnemite "eat" all the Pokéblocks he had placed, Kazuki tentatively took out a new Poké Ball and placed it next to Magnemite.
"Would you like to become my partner?"
"Zzzz~" Magnemite's eye shifted upward to look at Kazuki, then downward at the tiny remnants of the Pokéblocks. It floated forward and tapped the button on the Poké Ball with its magnet.
A red light shot out from the ball, enveloping Magnemite and pulling it inside. The ball shook a few times before finally settling.
Kazuki bent down, picked up the Poké Ball containing Magnemite, wiped off the dirt, and held it close. "Welcome to the team, Magnemite."
"Lair~"
Lairon let out a long yawn. After traveling all the way from Saffron City and not even getting to fight in the gym battle, she was bored out of her mind and could barely keep her eyes open.
Noticing Lairon's mood, Kazuki, who had spent so much time with her, knew exactly what she was thinking. He quickly reassured her:
"That gym battle was an accident. Who could've guessed Magnemite would barge in like that? I promise you'll get to fight in the next battle. It won't be long."
Lairon just rolled her eyes and didn't respond. Given Kazuki's tendency to avoid trouble, the only way he'd actively seek out a Pokémon battle was if the sun rose from the west tomorrow.
She wasn't wrong. Even Kazuki himself only planned to head to the next gym as quickly as possible. Neither of them could have predicted that a real battle would come so soon—and so suddenly…
…
Night fell, and the noise outside the bed gradually quieted down. Apart from the rustling of leaves in the breeze, only the faint chirping of insects could be heard.
After a long day of travel, Sabrina, who had just finished washing up and changed into a white pajama set with cute patterns, didn't go to bed.
Instead, she sat at the dressing table by the bed, her reflection showing her beautiful face. Her amber eyes occasionally flickered, as if recalling the day's events.
Unconsciously, the corners of her lips curled slightly. She cupped her smooth, fair cheeks with her hands, a faint blush appearing on her face.
"Miss, it's so late. Are you thinking about Kazuki? (Telepathy)"
Alakazam's yellow form materialized behind her. Seeing her young mistress in such an obvious state of infatuation, her expression became subtle.
But this wasn't necessarily a bad thing. In the past, Sabrina rarely showed any emotion, let alone such a tender expression. As someone who had watched her grow up, Alakazam was perhaps the most pleased with this change, aside from Sabrina's parents. And as for the boy who had brought about this change, since Sabrina liked him, Alakazam didn't mind helping their relationship along.
Hearing Alakazam's telepathic message, Sabrina didn't respond, but her increasingly red cheeks and the way she unconsciously twirled her hair betrayed her thoughts. Seeing her "honest" reflection in the mirror and Alakazam's "knowing smile," Sabrina could only shrink back and let out a soft "Mm."
"But… what Mom said… I didn't do it."
Speaking softly, Sabrina's beautiful eyelashes fluttered, and a hint of sadness flashed in her eyes. Before leaving, her mother had secretly communicated with her via telepathy, giving her some advice on life and, more privately, some tips on how to win a boy's heart.
She had tried one of them at lunch today, but unfortunately, she had not only failed but also broken Kazuki's pot.
Luckily, Kazuki hadn't been angry. But the other methods… The words her mother had spoken echoed in her mind, making her heart race as if it had a motor installed. Her face felt like it was on fire.
She turned to Alakazam and asked shyly, "Alakazam… do you think Kazuki will… like me like this?"
Like? If he can resist pouncing on you in this state, I might start questioning his gender!
Seeing Sabrina in such a shy state, Alakazam could only think this. But then, as if realizing something, she suddenly paused. "Miss, you're not planning to…"
Before she could finish, Sabrina, having received her affirmation, teleported away. Alakazam had no choice but to follow.
Arriving at Kazuki's bedroom door, Alakazam saw her young mistress with her head lowered, a fist extended but frozen mid-air, hesitating to knock.
After a few long seconds, Sabrina tugged at her pajama hem, seemingly mustering her courage. Just as her fist was about to knock, the door swung open from the inside
Kazuki, now dressed in casual clothes, rushed out and collided with the stunned Sabrina.
Feeling a soft, warm body crash into his chest, Kazuki instinctively looked down. What he saw nearly caused him to lose all rationality.
"Mmm…" Sabrina's body trembled violently as Kazuki's masculine scent overwhelmed her. Her face turned completely red, steam practically rising from her head. Her crimson eyes swirled in confusion, and she mumbled incoherently.
Heat rushed to Kazuki's head, and he almost couldn't stop himself from throwing the girl onto the bed. But…
Biting his tongue hard, Kazuki forced his burning gaze to clear slightly. Breathing heavily, he placed his hands on Sabrina's shoulders and said:
"Magnemite just sensed something and rushed off. We need to catch up with it now…"
