Chapter 29
As soon as Vanessa turned off the phone, she couldn't hide her disappointment and sadness.
Tears started to gather in her eyes and fall as the cold wind blew. She bit her lips to muffle her sobs, not allowing anyone to hear or see her, though Yanna, who was not far away, knew what was happening.
Yanna slowly walked towards Vanessa and clasped her in her armd. She knew the result would be like this, and she couldn't do anything about it. Right now, she felt hopeless too, as she experienced a sense of sadness and discomfort that she couldn't quite place, except that it was all about Vanessa.
No words were exchanged as Yanna gently led Vanessa back to their Turtle Shack. Once they sat down, Vanessa began to cry even more.
Yanna looked up, unable to hold back her own tears. She reflected on everything that had happened since she came into this world and what she had learned. She felt grateful and happy to have Vanessa in her life. Vanessa made her see that life wasn't just about working hard. She learned how to appreciate who she really was, something she hadn't had a chance to show in front of others except to her assistant.
Though their time together had been short, it pained Yanna to see Vanessa cry like this. Vanessa always displayed a tough exterior both on and off-camera, but with Yanna, she was willing to show her vulnerable side. It made Yanna feel special.
Then she thought about Oliver, the main protagonist of the book. She frowned just thinking about him and the way he treated Vanessa in the story.
He treated Vanessa well and protected her, but the problem was that Vanessa wasn't the only one receiving his special treatment. It hurt Vanessa, who had a soft heart, to see this. Unfortunately, by the time she found out, it was too late, as she had already married Oliver in the storyline. Yanna had been irritated when she finished the book. Vanessa couldn't even file for a divorce within the context of her family's story.
Yanna hugged Vanessa tightly and composed herself before speaking. Although she wanted to comfort Vanessa and be honest, she still had to pretend not to know.
"Vanes, what's wrong?"
"Yanna, I don't want you to go, but the director can't do anything about the decision made by the sponsors."
"Vanes, I'll be fine." Yanna released her hold on Vanessa and looked into her eyes.
She felt her heart start to race as soon as their eyes met. She suppressed whatever feelings she had at that moment, knowing that it wasn't the right time to address them.
Vanessa felt as though she had an illusion that Yanna was about to kiss her. She couldn't believe it, yet she couldn't help but hope.
Unexpectedly, Yanna did kiss her on the forehead. Vanessa was shocked, and her tears suddenly stopped flowing, which made Yanna smile.
"Have you calmed down?"
"I... yes."
"Don't worry, what actually worries me is if the person replacing me is a jerk."
"No, don't worry. I know who will replace you, but I just don't feel comfortable around him."
"Then, don't get close to him. If he takes two steps closer to you, take five steps back."
"He is not a bad person, Yanna."
"We can't tell. It's better to be cautious."
"He is good to me. He is my childhood friend."
"Oh..."
"..."
"..."
"Yanna?"
"Let's go to sleep. It's getting late."
Yanna, feeling uncomfortable inside, couldn't help but be irritated. She wanted to remind Vanessa about Oliver but remembered that Vanessa and Oliver were childhood friends. What about her? She was just a new friend.
Yanna didn't show her irritation outwardly, but Vanessa, being an excellent actress herself, sensed that something was wrong. Just a while ago, Yanna had been comforting her, but when the topic shifted to Oliver, Yanna's behavior changed.
Vanessa couldn't help but feel angry at Yanna's current behavior. She wanted to get mad but didn't want to waste her time getting angry, considering they would soon be separated.
"Yanna, what's the problem?"
"There's no problem."
"Yanna, I know there is."
"Vanessa, there is no problem at all."
Yanna wanted to remain silent, but every time Vanessa spoke, her emotions and thoughts started to stir. Vanessa, too, started to feel irritated by Yanna's evasiveness.
Vanessa was furious but couldn't vent her emotions. She didn't want to get angry at Yanna, but Yanna refused to talk. She clenched her fists, and her tears began to flow once again. It was the first time she had experienced such emotions that she couldn't put into words.
She was about to stand up and leave when Yanna approached her again and embraced her. She didn't say anything; she was angry and want to let go but she didn't want any conflict between them and want to hear what she's gonna say.
"Vanes, I... I'm sorry. I'm being unreasonable. I didn't mean it."
When Yanna realized her actions, she knew she had been wrong, but she had no idea what was going on with herself. But when she saw Vanessa's tears, her mood fluctuated once again. She felt hopeless too because she had never experienced such complicated emotions before.
However, she didn't want Vanessa to misunderstand her.
"Vanes? Are you angry?"
"..."
"Listen, I... it's... how should I say this... actually, I'm going through some trouble right now, which makes me not think properly and act like an idiot."
"What is it?"
"..."
"..."
"You know what, if you—"
"No, no, please! It's... it's kind of embarrassing."
Yanna held Vanessa tightly, unwilling to let go. Vanessa started to feel better now that Yanna was willing to talk. She didn't want to be left in the dark, especially not by Yanna.
