Chapter 419: Chapter 418: Take Refuge
"No, you can't do this!"
"I'll tell you everything you want to know, please, please!"
"They're innocent, please, please come back! I'll tell you everything you want to know, just please don't do anything to them!"
"Police! Police, come quickly! I'll tell you everything, just please protect my family! Please!"
As Jiang Hai moved firmly toward the exit, the man named Camilla March tried desperately to rise and stop him. Unfortunately, his hands and feet were cuffed to a fixed chair, making it impossible for him to stand, let alone move.
Though his hands and feet were bruised, he seemed to feel no pain and continued to shout.
When it became clear that his pleas couldn't sway Jiang Hai, he turned to call the police. For him, the only person he could trust now was the police—his former biggest enemy.
"Jiang, this trick of yours really works," Moses Adams said with a chuckle after closing the door to the interrogation room once again.
Evildoers are often punished by other evildoers. Jiang Hai's "kill your whole family" tactic was indeed effective.
"Do you think I'm joking?" Jiang Hai laughed bitterly at Moses Adams' words. "No, I'm serious." He would never joke about something like that.
He then moved on to the other three interrogation rooms. Aside from one diehard who still refused to speak, the other two were panicking and begging Jiang Hai to release them. But unfortunately, Jiang Hai was serious about carrying out his threat. The people who had accompanied the attackers and blocked the road all deserved to die, but Jiang Hai couldn't bring himself to kill their families.
He wouldn't let these individuals go, either—he needed to assert his power. He wasn't someone to be messed with.
But how to deal with these people was a dilemma. With so many individuals involved, handling them one by one would be far too troublesome. Flying to Miami and hiring people to return to Boston would be expensive and logistically complicated. Just thinking about the back and forth made Jiang Hai feel conflicted.
After exiting the interrogation rooms, the police took over the investigation. This time, they worked quickly and efficiently. They soon discovered that their boss, Billy Warren, was the one behind the attack on Jiang Hai. Moreover, Billy Warren was involved in illicit activities like H, gambling, and flour trade. In exchange for the protection of their families, these individuals divulged everything they knew, much to the police's satisfaction.
The Winthrop police contacted the Boston authorities, who moved to arrest Billy Warren. However, by the time they arrived, he had already fled. They sealed his properties, warehouses, and some of the stores he had connections to, seizing large quantities of flour and other goods.
Of course, none of this had any direct impact on Jiang Hai. He was still preoccupied with how to carry out his plan to kill the families of those involved.
After finishing his work at the police station, Jiang Hai took a car back to the manor with Moses Adams.
Once home, Moses went to deal with various issues like the manor's renovations and vehicle maintenance, while Jiang Hai retreated to his villa. He sank into the sofa in the empty living room, trying to organize his thoughts. Since the events of the previous night, the villa had been largely deserted. Darlene and Marianne were staying in Aphra's room, and Bernice and Xiaoya were at Hilda Leonard and Becky Hall's small villa. This was only temporary, though—the others would return once the villa was repaired.
At the moment, however, Jiang Hai had nowhere to stay. He had spent the previous night at the police station and had no idea where he would sleep tonight. While most of the villa was fine aside from the exterior walls and his own room, it was still considered a crime scene, meaning the guest rooms were off-limits.
"This is a headache. What should I do?" Jiang Hai rubbed his temples, feeling a rare sense of frustration. Since coming here, his life had been relatively carefree—eating, playing, and sleeping. Aside from not having a fixed girlfriend, his life had seemed like a dream.
Now, suddenly faced with so many responsibilities, he didn't feel equipped to handle them all. The matter of revenge, in particular, weighed heavily on him. If he didn't act, his anger would never subside, but how could he take action? Should he go in person? What if things went wrong?
There was no one reliable in Boston to help him. Even if he wanted to ask Bell for assistance, Jiang Hai knew he couldn't. Bell Lester, a soldier with a strong sense of justice, would never agree to kill women and children. Jiang Hai had no other option.
"What? Are you thinking?" Just as Jiang Hai was lost in thought, a voice interrupted from behind.
Startled, Jiang Hai turned around to see Azarina Vicarbolio standing there.
"It's you. Haven't you left yet? Thank you so much for last night." Seeing her, Jiang Hai relaxed, settling back into the sofa.
"Don't thank me. I'm saving myself. Besides, if I leave, I don't really have anywhere to go." Azarina moved her long legs and sat down on the sofa beside Jiang Hai.
"The world is big, there's always a place for you," Jiang Hai said. He knew a bit about her situation, but with her skills, she could easily find a place to live. Still, he could only offer her some comforting words.
"But I don't really like going outside. What do you think of me staying?" Azarina suddenly looked at Jiang Hai seriously, causing him to pause in confusion.
"I know you've been troubled lately, and you could use a capable ally. What do you think of me? I might not beat you, but when it comes to close combat, your special forces subordinates wouldn't stand a chance against me." Azarina's words left Jiang Hai baffled. What was she getting at?
In fact, Azarina, like most people, was afraid of the unknown. Though she had been trapped in a life of constant danger and scheming, she had found a strange sense of peace here with Jiang Hai. No endless tasks, no constant fear of death, no need for intrigue—just good food, drink, and a laid-back life. Even though it hadn't lasted long, she had grown fond of it. Staying with Jiang Hai seemed much better than going out and finding another job.
She believed Jiang Hai had many things he would need her help with.
"When I was six, I joined the KGB and started learning combat and firearm techniques. By twelve, I completed my first mission independently. By fourteen, I was trained in espionage. I know many tricks to please men, though I've never used them in the field. But if you want me to stay, all these skills are at your disposal." Seeing the hint of interest in Jiang Hai's eyes, Azarina smiled and inched closer to him.
When she got too close, Jiang Hai pulled back in surprise.
"What are you afraid of? It's not like you can't beat me." Azarina chuckled, her training making her confident and bold. For her, her body was just another tool, a weapon, a means to complete her mission. But Jiang Hai wasn't used to this kind of behavior. Though he wasn't shy with women, he didn't want this kind of complication.
"Alright, forget it. If you want to stay, stay. There's no need to try anything else." Jiang Hai coughed awkwardly, realizing at the critical moment that he had no real choice.
Azarina's strength was undeniable, and he could certainly use her as a bodyguard. Plus, having a beautiful, strong woman by his side would boost his status.
"In that case, thank you, boss," Azarina said, her eyes narrowing with a smile.
She had begun to find Jiang Hai interesting, especially now that she saw his weaknesses clearly.
"You'll be free most of the time, but when I need to go out, just follow me. You can manage your time as you wish otherwise. I'll help with your identity problem. The weekly salary is $2,000, with a separate year-end bonus," Jiang Hai said. He had hired bodyguards before, so he had a rough idea of what was reasonable.
