Chapter 150: Just A Grade-C Mission?
Ethan leaned back slightly in his chair, his fingers laced together on the sleek, modern table.
He was seated in one of the smaller meeting rooms inside Nemesis HQ.
His eyes moved between Luciano, Helena, and Maya. All three wore calm expressions, but there was seriousness behind their eyes.
Letting out a quiet breath, he asked, "So… what now?"
Luciano, sitting at the head of the table, let a small smile slip through.
"Straight to the point. I like that." He glanced at Maya, then Helena. "You sure you want me to be the one to tell him?"
Both women gave him a nod.
Luciano sighed, then turned his gaze back to Ethan.
"Nemesis wants to recruit you."
"Recruit me?" Ethan raised an eyebrow, his tone even. "For what, exactly?"
Before Luciano could respond, Helena leaned forward, her voice calm but firm. "Nemesis acts as a check and balance for Ascendants."
She paused before continuing, "Especially those from powerful families. If left unchecked, they could destroy cities. Our job is to make sure they don't."
Maya followed up smoothly, her tone more grounded. "We're not just here for politics either. We step in during wars, stop rogue Ascendants, and protect civilians from being caught in the crossfire."
Ethan listened closely. His face gave nothing away, but inside, his mind was fitting the pieces together.
He gave a small nod. "So basically… you're like an international task force for Ascendants. You handle what normal authorities can't."
"Exactly," Helena said.
It all made sense now. Mark's vague comments about the military. The secrecy around Ascendants. The tight control over their powers.
Ethan thought back to Mark's stories about being in the army. He hadn't lied. Not really. He'd just told the safest version of the truth.
And it was the right call. If he'd told Ethan everything, panic might've taken over. The same thing would happen if the public ever learned the full truth. Entire countries could fall into chaos.
Ethan turned his attention back to the table. His voice was steady. "If I join… what exactly would I be doing?"
Luciano gave a small nod. His smile faded slightly, replaced by a more serious tone.
"Normally, someone like you would go through the academy first. That's where we train our agents before they're deployed."
He paused.
"But in your case, that's not going to happen."
Ethan tilted his head. "Why not?"
This time, Maya answered. "Because of the LaRues. What they're planning is too dangerous to wait for. We need to act now."
Ethan's brow furrowed. "What exactly are they planning?"
Luciano's expression darkened. His reply was blunt.
"A coup."
Ethan blinked, the word hitting hard. "A coup?"
Luciano nodded. "Based on the intel we've gathered, the LaRues are forming alliances with the other Great Families in Arkansa—Roscoes, Ansons, Wisoba, Aruz. Their plan is to overthrow the current government."
Ethan leaned in slightly. "When?"
His voice was calm, but inside, he was already preparing himself.
He needed to know everything.
"They're moving," Luciano said, his voice low. "With their research and creations nearly complete, they're starting to act more aggressively." He paused for a moment, then added with a heavy tone, "Once they've locked down control here in Arkansa, we believe their next move is to take over the entire country."
Helena leaned forward, her fingers tapping lightly against the table. "Their plan doesn't stop there. They intend to restructure the nation into five regions, with each family ruling one."
Ethan frowned. "How do you know that?"
"We have our sources, Ethan."
His jaw tightened as the weight of it all settled in. "Is there anything standing in their way?"
"For now?" Maya glanced at Luciano before answering. "The government, the military, and the other Great Families in the remaining fourteen states. But if the LaRues play their cards right, they could bring more of them to their side."
Luciano nodded grimly. "But, the biggest obstacle in their way is the Khans family."
"The Khans?" Ethan asked. "Why?"
"They're the only Supreme Family in the country of Arland. Direct descendants of the Khans Kingdom's royal bloodline. They're the closest thing to untouchable this nation has."
Ethan leaned back slowly, nodding. He remembered studying the Khans family in school—how their name carried weight even in modern times. "So the LaRues either need to take them out… or convince them to stay silent."
"Exactly," Helena said. "And if the Khans push back, it won't just be an Ascendant conflict. It'll be a nationwide war."
Ethan let out a deep breath. The scale of what was unfolding felt enormous, like a storm that had been building for years. "So where does Nemesis come in?"
Luciano leaned forward, his tone sharp. "We stop them. We shut down this coup before it starts. Keep the country from falling into chaos."
Ethan met his eyes. "And you think I can help with that?"
Luciano's expression softened, just slightly. "We don't have much choice. Our forces are stretched thin. There have been too many crises over the last few years. And with Mark… out of the picture… we need all the help we can get."
Ethan narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean? Isn't everything the LaRues are doing enough to get Nemesis's full attention?"
It was a calculated question. He wanted to see how much they were willing to tell him.
Maya hesitated before answering. "As much as I hate to say it, everything involving the LaRues… including Mark being held captive… has only been classified as a Grade C mission."
"Grade C?" Ethan blinked, surprised. "You're telling me this mission involves Artificial Ascendants, a kidnapped Nemesis agent, bio-weapons, and a full-on coup… and it's still only Grade C?"
He shook his head slowly. "Makes me wonder what Grade A and B missions look like."
No one laughed.
What they didn't tell him was that above A and B, there were also S, SS, SSS… and even star-grade missions.
Ethan looked at Helena and Maya. Both nodded silently.
He took another breath and straightened his posture.
"All right. Tell me what I need to do."
Luciano gave a faint smile, his eyes glinting with approval. "Good. Let's get started."
