Chapter 148: The Core Leaders

Helena stood in the dimly lit observation room.

The large holographic screen in front of her glowed softly, casting light across her face. On the screen were four distinct figures, each one representing a pillar of Nemesis's inner structure.

These were the Four Core Leaders, the guiding minds behind everything Nemesis stood for.

The first figure was a broad-shouldered man with a scar running down his cheek. He was known as the Combat Leader.

His face was stern, unreadable, and he wore a high-collared uniform covered in medals from countless battles. His presence spoke of discipline and experience.

Next was the Techno Leader, a thin man with sharp features and multiple cybernetic implants.

His eyes were intense, and his metal fingers twitched slightly, glowing with built-in tech. He radiated intelligence, the kind that was always thinking ten steps ahead.

The third figure was cloaked in shadows. Even in the hologram, her face was barely visible. She was the Stealth Leader.

Her voice, when she spoke, was soft but firm, the kind that made people listen without question. She handled Nemesis's secret operations and protected its most sensitive information.

Last was the Vanguard Leader, an older woman with silver hair tied neatly in a bun. Her calm, steady presence gave off a sense of control. She was the strategist, the bridge that connected all the other leaders. Her role was to ensure that every part of Nemesis moved as one.

Helena stood tall and addressed them with her usual calm tone.

"Leaders, as requested, this is my report on Ethan Cole. He has completed the initial round of tests."

The Combat Leader leaned in, his voice deep and firm. "And? What's your assessment?"

"Ethan Cole is unique." Helena spoke without hesitation. "His results were consistent across all areas. Physically, his strength, speed, and endurance match a Higher Three-Star Ascendant. His elemental tests, both in raw power and control, exceeded expectations for his current level."

"How much did he exceed?" the Combat Leader asked.

"On par with a Middle Four-Star Ascendant."

The Techno Leader raised a brow. His mechanical eye pulsed lightly. "Impressive. But not enough to call for a meeting like this. What makes him so special?"

"Yeah. We're here just because Mark wanted us to take a look at this kid," the Stealth Leader interjected. "You should not waste our time with a potential recruit."

Helena paused for just a breath, then spoke clearly. "Ethan Cole is a Golden Ascendant."

The room went silent. Even through holograms, the weight of that statement was felt.

The Stealth Leader's expression tightened.

"A Golden Ascendant..." she repeated. "Are you absolutely sure?"

Helena nodded. "Yes. His aura is faint, but it's there. That makes him the twelfth known Golden Ascendant on Earth."

Everyone was silent again. That was how rare a Golden Ascendant. Even after thousand of years, only a dozen of them were present.

The Stealth Leader's voice cut through the quiet. "Golden Ascendants are not a title that should be bestowed easily. They're called old monsters for a reason."

She paused before adding, "If he's truly one of them, why is he still a Lower One-Star at twenty?"

The Vanguard Leader answered before Helena could. "He's late to ascend, yes. But the fact that he's already this far, despite starting later than most, suggests he has unusual potential. Still… it also means risk."

The Techno Leader shook his head. "Potential doesn't mean much if it doesn't lead anywhere. By the time he becomes strong enough to matter, the LaRues and others will be far ahead."

Helena's tone sharpened slightly. "With respect, I disagree. His late start isn't a weakness. It's an anomaly."

The Leaders looked at her intently. Their gestures showed that they wanted her to continue.

Helena nodded, "In just one week, he's achieved more growth than most do in months. If we support him now, he could become a game-changer."

The Combat Leader leaned back, folding his arms. "Or he could become a threat. A Golden Ascendant attracts attention. If word gets out, every major power will come after him, and us."

Helena stayed steady. "I understand the risk. But the reward outweighs it. He isn't just strong, he's different."

"What do you mean by that?" the Stealth Leader asked.

"He is unaligned. A Golden Ascendant with no ties to any family, faction, or secret order. That makes him a rare opportunity."

The Stealth Leader spoke again, her tone colder. "And if he's pretending? If he's already working with someone and we're being played?"

"He's not," Helena said firmly. "I've watched him closely. He has no links to the Great Families, the Supreme Families, or even the Ancient ones. He's walking this path alone, unsure of where he fits in. That's exactly why we need to step in before someone else does."

The Vanguard Leader tapped a finger on her desk, eyes narrowing. "Then what's your recommendation?"

Helena took a breath. "We train him. We give him the tools, the support, and the purpose. If we let him go now, we risk losing him to another faction, or worse, letting him go rogue is something that Nemesis can't afford either."

The Combat Leader grunted. "And if he turns into more trouble than he's worth?"

Helena met his gaze through the screen. "Then we handle it. But I don't believe that'll happen. He's driven. Loyal to the people he cares about. If we give him reason, that loyalty can extend to Nemesis."

The Techno Leader exhaled slowly. His eye flickered as he processed her words. "If we do this, it has to be all in. No half-measures. He'll need full support."

The Vanguard Leader looked around the screen at her peers. "We have a choice. Take a risk and invest in Ethan Cole… or cut ties now before things get complicated."

The Combat Leader let out a slow sigh. "If Helena's this confident, I'll follow her lead. But the moment he becomes unstable…"

The Stealth Leader finished for him. "We move quickly."

Then the Vanguard Leader turned back to Helena. "He's yours now. Train him. Prepare him. And make sure he knows what this means. A Golden Ascendant in Nemesis could change everything, but only if he stays on our side."

Helena nodded once. "Understood."

The meeting ended right after. The leaders didn't wait for anyone or anything.

Silence filled the observation room.

Helena leaned back slightly, letting out a long breath. Her eyes drifted to the data still glowing on her tablet.

She thought of Ethan again.

A Golden Ascendant. The weakest of them so far.

But that wouldn't last.

And deep inside, she was certain, one day, he wouldn't just be the weakest.

He'd be the one everyone feared most.
