Chapter 24: Chapter 24 – Regrouping
Rin's pupils narrowed slightly. That dazzling blond figure stood like a beacon on the battlefield.
Minato Namikaze—this young jonin was now standing before them, back facing the group, the kunai in his hand gleaming coldly.
"Reinforcements from Konoha!" someone among the pursuing Mist ninja shouted warily. But moments later, mocking laughter followed. The so-called "reinforcements" turned out to be just one man.
They clearly didn't take Minato seriously—after all, he had yet to earn the moniker "Yellow Flash." But some of the sharper ones, noting his incredible speed, began cautiously retreating.
Hachidai narrowed his three-tomoe Sharingan slightly, clearly surprised by the sudden arrival.
"Did the Hokage send you?"
Minato turned and gave a warm smile, though his ocean-blue eyes held firm determination.
"I departed with the main force. Clan Leader Fugaku sent me to assist your squad. Now's not the time for explanations—please follow me."
With that, he quickly formed hand signs, and several specially crafted kunai flew in strange arcs toward the enemy lines. Rin noticed they were inscribed with complex formulas—the mark of the Flying Thunder God Technique.
"Go!" Minato called out and dashed into the fray.
His figure flickered between the kunai, each reappearance followed by a Mist ninja dropping.
Though he hadn't yet earned his title, his lightning-fast movements were already an overwhelming presence on the battlefield.
Rin followed the team's charge, witnessing firsthand the future Hokage's combat style.
Minato's movements were clean, efficient, and deadly—nothing flashy, every strike aimed at a vital point. In contrast to the Uchiha's often flamboyant jutsu, his style was no less lethal.
"So fast…" one Uchiha chunin murmured in awe, his Sharingan wide.
"Quit staring! Keep up!" Hachidai barked.
Under Minato's lead, the group quickly broke through the enemy's encirclement.
Rin noticed Shisui's two-tomoe Sharingan was locked onto Minato's every movement, as if trying to comprehend the blur of motion.
"That teleportation technique…" Rin heard Shisui mutter, his eyes shining with admiration.
Once they broke through, Minato led them to a secluded cove. Several Konoha boats waited at the shore, manned by fellow shinobi.
"Board the boats!" Minato ordered simply.
"Mist reinforcements will be here soon."
Everyone quickly boarded. The boats set sail, drifting away from the shores of Uzushiogakure.
The mission was over—shorter than Rin had expected, but far more dangerous.
"You okay?" Shisui walked up to her, concern in his voice. A shallow wound on his arm had already been self-treated.
Rin shook her head.
"I'm fine. But you—did your Sharingan evolve?"
Shisui touched his eye and gave a sheepish smile.
"Yeah… it just happened during the fight."
"Well done." Hachidai appeared behind them, his crimson Sharingan scrutinizing Shisui.
"A double tomoe at your age is rare. The clan leader will want to see you when we return."
Rin pursed her lips. Rare? Even awakening the Sharingan at Shisui's age was rare, let alone reaching two tomoe.
Shisui nodded respectfully, eyes shining with hope. Rin knew—he'd officially entered the Uchiha elite's radar. His future would only grow more complicated from here.
Minato walked to the center of the group, his golden hair glowing under the sun.
"Good work, everyone. Though the mission ended early, the intel we gathered is valuable."
Hachidai crossed his arms, voice stiff.
"You didn't have to interfere. We could've completed the mission on our own."
Unfazed, Minato kept his kind smile.
"I believe in the Uchiha's strength. But this operation was assigned by Clan Leader Fugaku. He wanted timely updates from the front, and we owe that much to the Third Hokage's trust."
Rin noticed the flicker of disgust in Hachidai's eyes at the mention of "Third Hokage."
The rift between the Uchiha and the Hokage faction was clearly deeper than she'd thought.
On the way back, Rin deliberately approached Minato. He stood at the bow, gazing out at the horizon, sunlight gilding his silhouette.
"Minato-senpai," Rin said softly,
"Thank you… for the rescue."
Minato turned, his gentle smile immediately appearing.
"Ah, Rin. Seems like you've found some peace of mind?"
"Yes… my sensei helped me through it."
"Hmm, Hokage-sama really knows how to guide his students. Wish he'd teach me how to handle mine better—Obito and Kakashi…"
He trailed off, then suddenly leaned closer with a playful glint in his eye.
"By the way, Rin—you were amazing back there. That teleportation move—did you come up with it yourself? Does it have a name?"
He had clearly seen her use "Gutsuei Shunpo" to eliminate the spies—and assumed it was some kind of high-speed jutsu.
Rin's heart skipped, but Minato's gaze was full of good-natured curiosity, not suspicion.
"It does have a name," she blurted out.
She feared that if she said it didn't, Minato would name it himself—and that would be a disaster.
She observed him up close. He was still young—early twenties at most—but already carried the poise of a future leader.
"So? What's it called?" Minato pressed, blue eyes gleaming with interest.
Rin hesitated.
"Uh… Gutsuei Shunpo…"
"Gutsuei Shunpo?Moon shadow step?" Minato frowned slightly, stroking his chin.
"Hmm… sounds poetic, but not flashy enough! A teleportation technique needs a cooler name!"
Rin felt a surge of alarm. She knew all too well what Minato's naming sense was like—just look at his jutsu names.
"How about 'Silver Meteor Flash'? Or 'Phantom Gale Dance'? Oh! I've got it! 'Moonlight · Supersonic · Blitz!'"
Rin's mouth twitched involuntarily.
Of course. That's so you, Minato-senpai.
"S-Senpai… I think 'Gutsuei Shunpo' is fine…"
"Too plain!" Minato shook his head, hair gleaming in the sun.
"Naming teleportation jutsu is serious business—just like my Flying Thunder God—"
"Minato-senpai!" Rin hurriedly cut him off.
"Actually, it's still in development… I might change the name later…"
"Ah…" Minato looked disappointed but quickly perked up.
"Then once it's finished, let's name it together!"
Rin sighed in relief.
Next time, I'll make sure to name it in advance—never give Minato an opening again.
Just then, the boat rocked violently.
In the distance, several Mist pursuit ships appeared on the horizon.
"Looks like we didn't completely lose them." Minato's expression turned sharp—the naming-obsessed jokester from moments ago vanished instantly.
He turned to the Uchiha aboard.
"Everyone, prepare for battle!"
Hachidai snorted, his Sharingan already fixed on the enemy.
"Finally, some worthy opponents."
Minato stood tall at the bow, gripping several marked kunai. The sea breeze tousled his golden hair, sunlight painting him in a divine glow. Though he had yet to earn the title "Yellow Flash," his presence already radiated the charisma of a future Hokage.
"Ready—"
Minato's voice cut through the wind.
The Mist ships drew closer, their ninja forming hand seals. Rin's hand hovered over her short sword, ready to strike.
Just as the battle was about to erupt—a fleet of Konoha ships appeared on the horizon.
At the lead stood none other than Uchiha Fugaku.
"Reinforcements from the Clan Leader!" a Uchiha chunin shouted in excitement.
The Mist ships turned around at once and retreated.
Crisis averted, the tension on board eased instantly.
Minato sheathed his kunai, turned to Rin, and winked.
"Guess the naming discussion will have to wait."
Rin silently rejoiced at her narrow escape.
After regrouping, Fugaku personally listened to Hachidai's report.
When he heard about the two Root spies, his expression turned grim.
"I will demand an explanation from the Third Hokage myself."
Fugaku's voice was icy cold.
Standing nearby, Rin sighed internally.
The rift between the Uchiha and the village ran deeper than she imagined.
It was no wonder things would later spiral out of control.
Under Danzo's relentless pressure, it was a miracle the Uchiha hadn't rebelled yet.
All thanks to their so-called "soft" clan leader.
