Chapter 35 - The Formidable Airhead Girl
Nodachi is a weapon for the battlefield, emphasizing teamwork, and not particularly effective in one-on-one combat. Kitahara Hideji assumed a Chūdan-shiki stance, intending to end the match quickly and send this Airhead child home.
As Fukuzawa Yukari raised her wooden sword over her head, Kitahara Hideji had already focused his gaze and decided to strike preemptively. He lunged forward, attempting to stab Fukuzawa Yukari’s wrist and gain the upper hand. However, to his surprise, Fukuzawa Yukari, although appearing Airhead, wielded her sword with great skill, exuding a fierce and dangerous aura.
“Ahaha, I strike!” Fukuzawa Yukari completely ignored Kitahara Hideji’s attack on her wrist, her face filled with excitement. In return, she swung her sword directly at Kitahara Hideji’s head. The wind whistled sharply, and the speed was astonishing, almost giving the impression of striking before the initial attack.
Kitahara Hideji was taken aback. While he could have struck Fukuzawa Yukari’s wrist, it seemed that he might end up with his brains splattered instead. He quickly dodged to the side to avoid her strike, losing the advantage of his initial attack.
Fukuzawa Yukari showed no signs of letting up; her sword struck the ground heavily, sending rocks flying. Kitahara Hideji was about to seize the opportunity to strike Fukuzawa Yukari’s shoulder when he realized that her two-and-a-half-meter-long wooden sword seemed as light as a feather in her hands. It was perfectly controlled, and even as it bounced off the ground, the blade changed direction, twisting her waist to slash towards his waist and ribs.
Similar to the previous situation, he could have struck Fukuzawa Yukari, but she could also have inflicted significant damage to him simultaneously. It was almost too fast; Fukuzawa Yukari’s swordplay was incredibly swift!
Kitahara Hideji had to spring back several steps to react. No, this was not a matter of exchanging wounds; Fukuzawa Yukari’s movements were unbelievably quick. It looked like both sides were simultaneously hit, but in reality, he was the one hit first. So even if he managed to hit this girl, it wouldn’t have much killing power.
This Airhead child was formidable!
In the blink of an eye, Kitahara Hideji and Fukuzawa Yukari had exchanged blows for two rounds, with neither gaining the upper hand. Instead, Fukuzawa Yukari’s ferocious attacks forced Kitahara Hideji out of an effective attacking range.
He realized the meaning of “an inch longer is an inch stronger” as he struggled to get close to Fukuzawa Yukari. Her swings with the oversized wooden sword were like sweeping attacks, with powerful area-of-effect (AOE) capabilities, leaving almost no gaps to exploit. The heavy wooden sword combined with the momentum of her strikes could cause severe injuries, from head wounds to broken bones; the sound of the wind alone was chilling.
In a short time, Kitahara Hideji found himself in a dire situation. Forget about sending Fukuzawa Yukari home early; he was trying his best not to end up in the hospital. It was an extremely difficult situation.
However, despite the difficulties, Kitahara Hideji’s experience in close combat kept him composed. Taking advantage of a moment when Fukuzawa Yukari’s strike missed, he activated his skill called “Foreseeing,” freezing time for an instant. Countless semi-transparent Kitahara Hidejis and Fukuzawa Yukaris engaged in battle, but within the blink of an eye, over half of the possibilities had been slashed down by Fukuzawa Yukari.
Time resumed its flow, and Kitahara Hideji, gritting his teeth, used the opportunity when Fukuzawa Yukari’s strike missed to close the distance. He pressed his wooden sword against hers and charged forward, knowing he had to be the one to take the initiative and maintain an imposing presence.
Fukuzawa Yukari remained unfazed by Kitahara Hideji’s aggressive charge. Her face was filled with excitement, seemingly immersed in the joy of battle. With a quick twist of her left hand, she changed the direction of her wooden sword’s blade, while her right hand exerted force to turn the thrust into a horizontal slash, aiming to cut Kitahara Hideji in half from his abdomen.
Kitahara Hideji kept his wooden sword at his side, using the back of the blade to block Fukuzawa Yukari’s horizontal slash. Simultaneously, he slid the blade to continue his forward charge, but he felt a powerful force pushing back, making it difficult for him to resist. Fukuzawa Yukari had altered her thrust into a horizontal slash midway through, and that unexpected force had thrown him off balance.
The gap was huge! Kitahara Hideji gritted his teeth and endured, closing the distance to just over two meters in an instant. However, his wooden sword was now ineffective for offense and barely sufficient for defense. Thankfully, he had managed to reach the weak part of Fukuzawa Yukari’s wooden sword near the hilt, where the pressure was lower. This allowed him to free one hand and attempt a “Mu katana-tori (No-Sword Disarm)” technique to try and snatch her sword away. Even a ferocious tiger without its claws would be less formidable!
But to his surprise, the sword didn’t budge when he tried to disarm Fukuzawa Yukari. She gripped the hilt as if it were made of solid iron, and despite the pressure, it seemed like she didn’t even feel it. If anything, the pain seemed to excite her even more.
She laughed heartily and charged at Kitahara Hideji, slamming him back with her body and sword.
Kitahara Hideji felt like he had been struck by a rhinoceros, and all the air in his lungs was forced out. He lost control of his footing, stumbled backward, and nearly tumbled, while Fukuzawa Yukari swung her wooden sword again, shouting, “Ah-ha, Slash!” The lightning-fast strike came diagonally.
Helpless, Kitahara Hideji barely managed to lift his sword to block, but he couldn’t afford to take the full force of the blow. He quickly shifted the blade to unload the force, diverting Fukuzawa Yukari’s wooden sword with a desperate effort. This gave him a moment to catch his breath, but even so, his steps were unsteady, and his hand holding the wooden sword was almost numb, losing all sensation from his fingertips to his wrist.
Though it may seem slow to describe, the actual battle only lasted two or three seconds. As they passed each other, Kitahara Hideji took a desperate gasp for breath, while Fukuzawa Yukari didn’t seem to need any respite. She turned around, wielding her sword, and struck again, shouting in excitement, “Slash! Slash! Slash!”
Each shout was louder and filled with murderous intent, startling the night birds in the forest to take flight.
Kitahara Hideji activated his “Foreseeing” skill once more, freezing time to assess the current situation. The transparent figures of the combatants vanished almost entirely – he couldn’t win! Fukuzawa Yukari’s skill might not be exceptional, but her physical abilities were terrifying – her strength, speed, and reflexes were that of a monster. If they encountered her on a historical battlefield, Kitahara Hideji would immediately order archers to focus fire on her, turning her into a hedgehog before anything else.
It was true that a forceful attack could overcome any technique, and speed was indeed the key to martial prowess!
The problem was that this wasn’t a battlefield, and there were no archers to focus fire on Fukuzawa Yukari. Kitahara Hideji barely managed to dodge her attack, but the situation was getting worse. Fukuzawa Yukari fought with the excitement of a wild beast, possessing an instinct that seemed to anticipate Kitahara Hideji’s every move. Even his deceptive moves were easily avoided by her, and he found himself being cornered step by step.
Kitahara Hideji had forgotten why he engaged in this Sword Technique combat. All he could see was the tip of Fukuzawa Yukari’s sword, and all he wanted was to win or, more precisely, to “stay alive.”
There must be a way! There must be a way!
He used the Kuruma-nari-ryū technique to strike at Fukuzawa Yukari’s wooden sword weak spots while evading her attacks, managing to deflect her sword and avoid her continuous pursuit. This bought him a little bit of breathing space, but he continued to fight and retreat, his eyes burning with an unyielding will and a determination to survive.
He had flames burning in his eyes.
Fukuzawa Yukari’s eyes were also blazing with fighting spirit as she skillfully wielded her wooden sword with the elegance of a real blade. The sound of cutting through the air followed the swift swing of her blade. Her expression transformed from excitement to fervor, her mouth shouting in exhilaration. Her short skirt fluttered, and her black hair swayed lightly as she poured her whole being into the battle.
In her eyes, there was only Kitahara Hideji. She licked her lips, her face beaming with a smile. With a powerful Nagehanashi-ryū technique, she delivered a reverse Kesa (diagonal) strike towards him with incredible speed. Kitahara Hideji had no escape, and he tried to forcefully block the strike, but the force was too overwhelming. He was almost brought to his knees and seemed to have lost the strength to retaliate.
Fukuzawa Yukari switched her wooden sword into a horizontal sweep, her excitement escalating further. Laughing loudly, she declared, “Ah-ha, it’s over! Slash!”
Kitahara Hideji suddenly lifted his head, his sweat-soaked hair sticking to his forehead. His eyes flashed with determination, ignoring the ferocious horizontal strike that could send him to the hospital. Summoning his last ounce of strength, he lunged forward, his voice roaring –
“Die!”
