Ch. 31
Chapter 31: Just as He Nodded Off, a Pillow Arrived
“...You’re saying, you, an F-rank Transcendent, came here looking for a neighbor’s child, were attacked by one D-rank and two E-rank Transcendents, and in order to protect yourself, you killed them all instead, and you only suffered minor injuries?”
The security officer in a blue cap looked at the boy suspiciously: “Are you sure no one helped you?”
Jiang He nodded, his voice hoarse: “Only me.”
The officer was about to question him further when a voice came from afar: “He’s an S-rank Talent wielder, Principal Zhong’s student.”
The officer turned his head and saw a short-haired middle-aged man in a firefighter’s uniform walking over with a red-haired girl, immediately recognizing their identities.
“Captain Zhang, Captain Du.” The officer glanced at Jiang He, suddenly understanding, and put down his notebook: “So that’s how it is.”
He smiled at Jiang He: “A hero in the making—classmate, I now fully understand the situation. Thank you very much for your help. I’ll take these children back to the station first...”
Jiang He watched as several officers escorted the dazed but now-awake children onto a vehicle, driving away, and finally let out a sigh of relief.
This wasn’t some deserted place, but the old city district.
The locals, having heard the sounds of battle earlier, had already called the security bureau. Thus, not long after the fight ended, nearby officers had arrived on the scene.
Fortunately, Jiang He had foreseen this. Before the officers arrived, he had already sent a message to Du Lingwei.
Otherwise, explaining things would have been very troublesome—
For instance, regarding his identity as an S-rank Talent wielder. Jiang He had said it several times already, but the officers wouldn’t have believed it. What could he have done about that? They didn’t know that Central State First High School now had an S-rank student.
Jiang He thanked the two of them: “Thank you for the trouble.”
“It’s nothing.” Du Lingwei shook her head.
“What trouble? Hardly.” The short-haired middle-aged man was named Zhang Zhiyong, captain of the Seventh Squad. Jiang He had already met him earlier that day during his training at the fire department.
At this moment, Zhang Zhiyong’s gaze swept over the small courtyard that had been burned into ruins, and he asked in surprise: “This was your doing?”
“Yes.” Jiang He’s hoarse voice answered.
Hearing this, Zhang Zhiyong couldn’t help but click his tongue.
If Jiang He were D-rank, or even E-rank, defeating three human traffickers single-handedly wouldn’t have surprised him.
But Jiang He was only F-rank—and according to Du Lingwei, he had only awakened last Friday!
So this was an S-rank Talent? Seeing was truly believing. It was almost absurd.
However, this sparked an idea in Zhang Zhiyong’s mind.
“Jiang He, would you be interested in joining the fire squad?”
“Uncle Zhang?” Du Lingwei turned her head in surprise.
“Little Du, when you first joined the squad, weren’t you only E-rank?” Zhang Zhiyong said: “Jiang He may only be F-rank, but he managed to defeat a D-rank enemy. He’s stronger than you were back then.”
“Besides, I’m not asking him to fight people.”
“He needed no leads, yet managed to locate the kidnapped children in such a short time. That Talent of his is extraordinary.”
“That’s exactly the kind of ability we need!”
Du Lingwei was convinced.
Whether it was the school attack, or this incident, both had proven the excellence of Jiang He’s Talent—
Perhaps he wasn’t strong yet, but when facing many kinds of situations, he was far more useful than Transcendents who only had combat ability.
Most importantly, right now Central State City was plagued with frequent incidents, and manpower was in short supply.
“So, what do you think, Jiang He?”
Zhang Zhiyong’s eyes were filled with expectation: “You’ve only just awakened. This is the time for growth. As long as you’re registered with us, you can use my authority and resources to cultivate.”
“Though our fire squad’s facilities aren’t as extensive as the high school’s, training rooms like the 【Blood Refining Chamber】 are comparable in quality.”
“My physical strength has already reached its bottleneck. Ordinary Spirit Blood quotas are of no use to me for now. I’ve already given half to Little Du... the rest I can give entirely to you, about 200 grams’ worth.”
“And you don’t even need to formally join—just like Little Du, part-time. Help us when needed.”
Spiritual Blood also had grades.
The stronger the exotic beast, the higher the quality of Spirit Blood extracted from it.
At school, Jiang He’s monthly quota was 30 grams, but since his energy level was too low, what he actually used was only D-rank Spirit Blood.
Zhang Zhiyong, however, was a peak C-rank Transcendent. His quota was at least C-rank Spirit Blood.
Two hundred grams of C-rank Spirit Blood could absolutely raise Jiang He’s physique to 50 points, massively increasing his overall energy level.
He might even be able to spare some for inscribing new Spell Words!
This was just like dozing off and having a pillow delivered!
Jiang He nodded quickly: “I’m willing.”
He thought about how he needed to change profession to 【Word Keeper】 before Friday.
So he added: “I want to break through to E-rank as soon as possible, so...”
“Don’t worry, it won’t affect your cultivation.” Zhang Zhiyong said: “You’re only F-rank. You won’t be sent into combat. Normally, you’ll just train with Little Du.”
“If there’s another incident like today’s—disappearances or other thorny problems—then we’ll ask for your help.”
After finishing, Zhang Zhiyong smiled and extended his hand: “Welcome to the Seventh Squad.”
Jiang He shook his hand, and Du Lingwei also smiled: “Welcome aboard.”
……
With Du Lingwei as precedent, Jiang He’s entry into the squad was easy.
Zhang Zhiyong would handle the procedures, letting him rest for now. Tomorrow, when he went for training at the fire department, he just needed to sign the papers.
Jiang He was already exhausted. He rode back to the neighborhood in Zhang Zhiyong’s car, then went straight home.
Not long after he arrived, there came a knock on his door.
Opening it, he found Auntie Yang and Li Zhi visiting, their hands full of gifts.
Auntie Yang’s eyes were still red, her face haggard, though her spirits were much better.
She placed the things on the floor, then excitedly grabbed Jiang He’s hand, thanking him over and over. When she mentioned Jiang He’s parents, her tears wouldn’t stop.
Afterward, she pulled Li Zhi forward, urging him to thank Jiang He.
Li Zhi, however, seemed somewhat restrained and distant.
That was normal. The one who had suffered all day was Auntie Yang. From Li Zhi’s perspective, he had suddenly lost consciousness, and when he came to, he was already being escorted back by the officers. He hadn’t quite understood what had happened.
So to him, this “life-saving benefactor” didn’t feel real. He was reserved and unfamiliar.
Actually, Jiang He felt the same.
His decision to save people had been a spur of the moment. Now that Auntie Yang had come to thank him, he was the one left feeling at a loss.
Especially after sitting with Auntie Yang for a few minutes, more and more parents with children came by to thank him, which made him even more awkward—after all, he didn’t know them at all, he had just happened to rescue them along the way.
Once he finally sent them off, the house grew quiet again.
Jiang He lay on the sofa, finally feeling like he could breathe.
“How does it feel?” White Crane, who had been invisible the whole time, tore open a gift, picked up a piece of braised beef, and asked while chewing.
Jiang He turned his head to look at him: “What?”
“How does it feel being a hero?” White Crane asked.
Jiang He thought for a moment, then the corners of his lips lifted slightly: “Not bad.”
No matter what, when he saw Auntie Yang’s joyful expression, he felt a weight lift from his chest.
A flicker of complexity passed through White Crane’s eyes.
Then Jiang He suddenly remembered something and sat up again.
“Right, I rescued them and even took down an ‘Evil Wolf.’ Will that draw in more enemies?”
“Do we need to ask Teacher Zhong for help? She already knows about your existence anyway.”
“No need.” White Crane licked his fingers and opened another gift.
“If just any accident could rouse the Wolf Pack into full mobilization, they wouldn’t have remained hidden for so long.”
“When that Evil Wolf died, the Wolf Pack had already abandoned this city.”
“They won’t be coming back for now.”
