Chapter 35 - Moving On from a Life of Unfair Criticism
“…Uh…Chocoa…”
I woke up after having a strange dream that I couldn’t even remember.
“Ha-wa-wa-wa… *Cough*… *Ugh*…”
My voice was completely gone. Mixing in a few lies as I did yesterday must have worn it out to the point that it wasn’t just husky, it was nearly unusable. Clutching my sore throat, I sat up.
“…”
What… is this?
In my line of sight was a tiny cat sleeping like an angel on a bed of blankets, amidst a complete mess on the floor. Its light, nearly white fur blended in with the bedding, almost making it invisible. Could it have slept there, deliberately camouflaged? But more than that… how did it get there with those short legs?
My curiosity didn’t last long, as I noticed a path of crumpled blankets leading from my pillow to the disarray on the floor.
“Sigh…”
I couldn’t help but sigh at the thought of cleaning the house again after tidying it yesterday. But since the cat had eaten, I wasn’t particularly upset. I gently picked up the cat, which was lying in an odd position with its legs hidden, and placed it on the pillow before covering it with a blanket. Fortunately, it hadn’t left any mess on the bed, though the floor was another story. I got up immediately to start cleaning.
“…Is it… raining?”
While cleaning up pieces of scattered kibble and bits of meat that looked like modern art on the floor, I glanced at the small window. It wasn’t as dark as yesterday, nor did I hear the sound of heavy rain. I quickly finished the remaining cleanup and opened the door to check outside.
*Drip-drip.*
A light drizzle was falling from the sky.
“If it’s only this much… I can probably go through with it… *Cough*… Ah… My throat!”
Even talking to myself a little made me cough, and the stinging in my throat was unbearable. I went back inside, grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, and took the medication the doctor had prescribed. Taking it on an empty stomach wasn’t ideal, but there wasn’t much I could do at this point. After taking the medicine, I called Eunah unnie.
“…Hello…”
A hoarse voice, sounding rougher than mine, answered the call. I told her I thought we could proceed with the move.
“Is that so…? *Yawn*… Alright, I’ll send someone over, so get ready…”
“Thank you…!”
After walking around the house finishing the call, I looked back to see a pair of small blue eyes watching me from the bed. The cat’s pink nose contrasted with those deep blue eyes, making it look even more charming.
“Uh… hello?”
I waved a little, but the cat didn’t run away like yesterday. It just stared at me, tracking my slight movements with its eyes. It was still cautious but without the intense fear from before.
I approached the cat.
“…Hiss…”
There was no problem with me getting closer. The cat only flinched a little, but as I slowly extended my hand, it tried to back away, preparing to hiss again.
“…”
I realized the problem. Lowering my hand, I knelt down, leveling my red eyes with its blue ones, and let a gentle smile spread across my face.
“…Meow…”
Once the cat confirmed I meant no harm, it reached a paw out from under the blanket. Its short front legs slowly stretched onto the bed as it emerged, nudging the blanket with its tiny head. I just smiled, not making any further moves, because it had to approach me on its own.
The cat finally stepped all the way out of the blanket, revealing its perky ears, blue eyes, pink nose, adorable little mouth, short legs, snow-white fur, and slightly swaying tail. Still eyeing me carefully, it took cautious steps in my direction.
“Hello.”
Before I knew it, the cat was right in front of my face. In response to my greeting, it closed its eyes and nudged its head toward me as if in reply.
I stroked its small head with my finger. Feeling the soft texture of a cat’s fur for the first time was a wonderful sensation.
I spent quite some time petting the cat. Starting with its head, it soon leaned in closer, pressing its body against me, so I ended up petting its head and back, albeit a bit awkwardly.
“…Purr…”
The cat slowly opened its eyes, met mine, swished its tail, and then jumped back toward the blanket.
*Thump-thump-thump-thump—*
“Oh.”
Whether because it was unused to running or because it was on the bed, the cat tripped just in front of the blanket, sprawling out with its head tucked under the covers. I chuckled, lifting the cat up gently.
“Meow!”
The cat initially struggled, but as soon as I held it firmly, it calmed down. Lifting it higher so it could see me, I met its gaze.
“Meow~”
“…Strawberry… That’s it. You’re Strawberry from now on.”
“Meow?”
Preparing food for my new family member, now called Strawberry, it ran over to the edge of the bed, eagerly eyeing the food bowl.
“I’ll buy you something… like a little step stool… or something…”
I carefully set Strawberry down on the floor. This time, knowing what it was, it didn’t resist. Once on the floor, Strawberry devoured the kibble in the bowl with happy chomping sounds.
*Knock-knock-knock.*
As I was watching Strawberry eat, there was a knock on the door.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
It was Eunah unnie’s voice from outside.
“Come on in.”
Eunah unnie and her younger sister had arrived.
“Hm…? What brings you here?”
I could understand Eunah unnie coming because of the move, but I hadn’t expected her sister to tag along.
“Sightseeing? And don’t talk too much; your voice is already shot.”
Her sister handed me a mask as she stepped inside. I thanked her and put it on.
“Oh, so you’ve made friends?”
As soon as the new people entered, Strawberry abandoned the food bowl and darted to a corner filled with boxes.
“…It’s okay, they’re good people.”
I carefully approached Strawberry, speaking gently, and lifted it up. It flinched but didn’t run away this time.
“Don’t raise your hands; just watch.”
“It’s like a piece of art that says, ‘Look with your eyes only.’”
“Right…”
Though she seemed a little disappointed, there wasn’t much we could do. I found my softest hoodie and placed Strawberry into a carrier.
“We’re almost at the center, so get ready; looks like you already are.”

Kim Joo-hyun POV
“Ugh… the weather’s so fickle…”
Annoyed by the neither-rain-nor-clear skies, Kim Joo-hyun wandered aimlessly through the neighborhood. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d left home, but he was walking around his own area now.
“Ugh… you could’ve at least given me the address…”
The reason I was out was to keep a promise: after a game where a team kill led to a sure win slipping away, I’d ended up apologizing and was asked to help with a move. It had been so long. On this day of drizzling rain, I pulled my hat down, shielding myself.
“…”
I saw a large moving truck ahead, and someone emerging from a semi-basement.
***
Lee Suyeon POV
The moving truck had arrived, and I began passing the packed boxes to the center staff. They insisted they could handle everything, but I didn’t want to stand by idly since I wasn’t the one paying. Just as I picked up a relatively light box, someone took it from me. I looked up, wondering if a staff member thought I had taken on something too heavy.
“Hello, sir. I’m Aro. Kim Joo-hyun.”
“…Woah…”
Aro’s face, which I saw for the first time, was ordinary. His hair was greasy, despite the hat, and his dark circles were prominent.
“Oh… I didn’t tell you the time… I’m so sorry…”
“No, it’s fine. It was actually nice to walk for once. And the rain’s stopped.”
Just as he said, the rain had stopped. The blue sky was clearing, and a cool breeze was blowing.
“Hm… should I call you Su-yeon then…? *Cough*?”
“Heh, just Aro is fine. We’re not likely to meet in real life often anyway.”
With that, Aro loaded the boxes onto the truck.
“…Who’s that?”
Behind me was my sister, looking intensely at him.
After calming down my suddenly hostile sister, I introduced them to each other.
“Hello, I’m Lee Min-young.”
“Nice to meet you, I’m Kim Joo-hyun. Wow, both of you are stunning!”
“…”
“Whoa, don’t worry, I don’t have any intentions. I wouldn’t stand a chance anyway, so don’t look at me like that.”
“Hmph… alright then. Would you mind helping with the rest?”
“Sure~”
With that, Aro continued helping with the move.
The move took several hours, and if Eunah unnie hadn’t called a moving company, it might have taken more than a day. I left the old semi-basement behind and arrived at a new home. A clean space, filled with the scent of a new house, was soon filled with various boxes, a bed, a desk, my computer, and even my old wardrobe. The mini-fridge was placed in a larger kitchen, and numerous boxes were stacked around.
I carried the small carrier into the room and placed it on the bed.
“A room…”
I almost felt like celebrating the fact that my new home had an actual room, but I wasn’t sure what I’d do if I had alcohol. I decided to settle for ordering some black bean noodles later.
“Come out, it’s our new home.”
In the middle of a house full of unpacked boxes, the tiny cat tentatively took a few steps on the floor.
Curious to explore the new house, the cat dashed across the spacious living room.
I felt a sudden urge to share this adorable sight, so I sat down in front of my computer.
