Chapter 3 - The World Has Been Unfair to Me
When my mom suddenly appeared, I couldn’t say a word, and just then, my dad slowly walked in from behind.
Dad, who entered the hospital room, didn’t say anything.
No, maybe he was about to say something but stopped. Mom ignored him and continued speaking to me.
“Do… do you recognize who I am…? I’m your mom… Do you remember who this is?”
“I do… It’s my mom and Seo-ha…”
As my entire family gathered unexpectedly in the hospital room, memories of the past flooded back, and my expression darkened slightly.
Minyoung, who had been standing quietly beside me, picked up Seo-ha, who was still fast asleep even with all the noise, in place of my mom.
With her hands now empty, Mom grabbed mine and started pouring out all her worries and fears from the past.
“…Do you… know you’ve been asleep for over a month…? Do you know how worried we were?! We could only visit on weekends because of time… Minyoung did everything…”
“A month…”
Wondering if it was true, I glanced at the doctor, who quietly nodded. It really seemed that a month had passed.
I hadn’t watched any broadcasts, hadn’t been home, and I didn’t know what was going on, but first, I had to calm down my mom, who was still gripping my hand tightly, tears streaming down her face.
“I’m… not dead… I just look a little different now… And didn’t I tell you to speak in Seoul dialect when in Seoul? You sound country.”
“…I’m sorry… I still don’t know how to speak the Seoul dialect… Are you really okay? You’re not hurt anywhere?”
“Other than feeling a bit weak, I’m perfectly fine. Oh my, Mom, you’ve gotten so skinny… Have you not been eating properly?”
After patting my mom’s back for a while, she finally stopped crying and stepped back.
“Ahem…”
The doctor, who had been silently watching everything, wiped at his eyes and cleared his throat, drawing our attention.
“Is it okay if I talk with the patient for a bit?”
“…Let’s step out.”
At Dad’s suggestion, my family nodded and left the room.
Click-
The door closed, leaving only the doctor and me in the room.
“How are you feeling physically?”
The doctor cautiously opened the conversation.
“…I feel weak…”
I lifted my arm and spread my hands, noticing that my rough, calloused hands were gone, replaced by the small, soft, white hands of a woman.
“Well then… I’ll tell you what we’ve learned so far and what your family has shared.”
I lowered my arm and nodded, signaling the doctor to continue with a serious expression.
“First of all… it’s true that you’ve become a woman… Your sister was the one who found you in your semi-basement apartment after you collapsed…”
“When the paramedics arrived, they didn’t find a man in his early twenties. Instead, they found a silver-haired woman covered in blood, unconscious.”
“The paramedics, concerned about the woman’s life, moved her to the ambulance. Other responders checked the house but didn’t find anyone else.”
“The nearby CCTV footage also showed a normal young man entering, which made things even more confusing… Your sister was initially shocked and didn’t believe it, but after comparing the situation and DNA, she accepted it.”
“Do we not know why this happened? Like a disease or something…”
At my question, the doctor paused, swallowed, and then spoke.
“Uh… I’m sorry… We’ve shared your case with renowned doctors in the medical field, trying to find similar cases, but none have been found… Though we didn’t reveal your identity, we did consult without saying anything. I apologize.”
The doctor repeatedly apologized before bowing his head.
“…It’s fine… You did it to help me… So what happens to me now?”
I was curious. How am I supposed to live in this body? Can I even live a normal life?
“All your health metrics came out normal. Other than reduced strength, you’re just an ordinary woman… But you’re going to face a lot of changes. It’ll be difficult to adjust, and you might face some mental challenges.”
What can I do with this body? Working at a warehouse, and lifting boxes, seems impossible. Even walking around is hard, so how could I carry boxes weighing tens of kilos?
With my unusual white hair and red eyes, maybe I could get a job at a café or something, working the counter?
“…Hospital bills…”
Suddenly, I was hit with the fear of practical issues. I had been in a private room for a month. Surrounding me were dozens of noisy machines, amplifying my anxiety.
“The hospital director covered your bills. This situation is unprecedented in history, and after hearing about your situation from your sister, he helped.”
“…When can I be discharged?”
“We’ll monitor you until next week, and if you seem fine, you can be discharged. But it would be best to visit the hospital regularly afterward. I can introduce you to a psychiatrist if needed…”
“N-no… That’s too much just for me…”
“…Understood. For now, do some simple rehab therapy, and you should be able to leave.”
“Okay…”
“Oh, by the way, your friends asked if they could visit tomorrow. Would that be okay?”
Ah, right. I had plans to drink with them that night. I suddenly felt guilty imagining how they must have felt after hearing I was hospitalized, and one important thought popped into my head.
My favorite stream… It’s such a shame. If a whole month has passed, the broadcast might not even be saved.
“What day is it today…?”
“It’s Saturday…”
“The… time?”
“A little past 11.”
“Aaah…”
As stress overwhelmed me, I grabbed my head, and I could feel the doctor growing uneasy. Of all nights, it had to be Saturday.
My favorite streamer was supposed to broadcast tonight. But most streams ended between 6 and 9 or 10 p.m., and she didn’t stream on Sundays, saying she needed a break.
“Uh… is something wrong?”
“N-no… Is there Wi-Fi here?”
“Yes… But why?”
I couldn’t bring myself to say, “I’m upset I missed my favorite streamer’s broadcast, so I want to watch the replay.” It was too embarrassing.
“It’s nothing…”
After chatting a bit more, the doctor left, and my family returned. I said goodbye to Seo-ha, who was still asleep, and since it was getting late, my parents went home. My usually silent dad patted me on the shoulder and told me to let him know if I needed anything and to stay strong before leaving.
Eventually, it was just me and my sister in the room.
“Hey… oppa, are you asleep?”
“What?”
Her gentle voice rang out softly in the quiet hospital room, instantly lifting my mood.
“Um… I’ve been thinking about it… Shouldn’t I start calling you ‘unnie’ now?”
She wasn’t wrong. I wasn’t her ‘oppa’ Lee Su-yeon anymore but her ‘unnie’ Lee Su-yeon. It felt like the feminine name I’d always been teased for growing up had finally found its place.
“…Sorry.”
When I didn’t respond, my sister must’ve thought she’d said something wrong, as she quickly apologized.
“…No, it’s fine. Now that I think about it, that’s probably right. Even if I can’t go back to my original body, I’m still me. It might feel awkward, but if you want to call me that, go ahead.”
“Okay… Unnie…”
Being called something other than the usual title sent shivers down my spine. To shake off the strange feeling, I quickly changed the subject.
“So… is school going well?”
“It’s vacation now. I’ll be a sophomore next month…”
“Have you made a lot of friends?”
“….”
Since she was lying on the guardian bed, which I couldn’t see from here, I couldn’t see her face, but I knew my sister well enough to know she had probably turned her head away in silence.
“Make lots of friends… Do you have enough money for rent and living expenses?”
“It’s okay. Thanks to you, I’m managing fine.”
“Good… Then sleep well…”
“Yeah… You too, unnie…”
With the unfamiliar sound tickling my ears, I drifted off to sleep.
“Ugh…”
Feeling something strange on my face, I slowly opened my eyes.
“Ah, you’re awake?”
I must’ve forgotten to close the curtains last night, as the bright sunlight stung my eyes. Squinting, I adjusted my focus and saw my sister poking my cheek.
“…What do you think you’re doing?”
“Your cheeks are super soft, unnie.”
“And you woke me up just to…”
“It’s already 2.”
Huh? 2? If it wasn’t 2 a.m., then it was 2 p.m.? Me? I’d always wake up early to go to work, and by evening, I’d be home watching my favorite stream. That had been my routine for months, and I usually woke up at 7 a.m. without an alarm.
“2?”
“Yeah… You looked so peaceful, I didn’t want to wake you, so I just watched for a bit.”
“Watched? That’s a bit much…”
Even as I said that she didn’t stop poking my cheek, so I swatted her hand away and sat up.
“Unnie… I’ve been watching you for hours, and I came up with an idea.”
“Hours…? What is it?”
With a serious expression, my sister spoke.
“How about you start streaming, unnie?”
