Chapter 407: Sacrifice the Body and Burn the Soul for Ah Jiao
By the end of the year, Yu Qingtan returned to the Southeast Region, delivering the Five Elements Technique respectively to the Wendao Sect and The World Academy Southeast Branch, and once again preached at the Southeast Branch.
Afterward, Yu Qingtan's avatar, the Green Holy Maiden of the Sect of Commoners, began to promote the Five Elements Technique within the sect following the permission of their leader, the Life Revered One. The Green Holy Maiden's rate of expanding the sect's members was even faster.
Yu Qingtan spent a happy New Year in the Tanxian Elegant Courtyard with familiar people like Xiang Yiyi, Xiang Ru, and the true person Rou Jia. Then the time came to the Lichuan Calendar year of 7105, with Yu Qingtan turning twenty-one.
Yu Qingtan's system panel finally showed that her Affection Value had reached one hundred million, and she couldn't wait to exchange it for a card to upgrade a Lifebound Artifact to a Middle-grade Dao Artifact in the system panel.
Then, Yu Qingtan went to Luo Li Island, got ready, took out her Lifebound Artifact, the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella, and used the card to upgrade the Lifebound Artifact to a Middle-grade Dao Artifact.
Your journey continues on My Virtual Library Empire
Immediately, a mysterious force began to surge quietly. The Five Elements Canglan Umbrella, originally floating serenely in the air, started to emit a faint five-colored glow, brilliant and dazzling.
Within the glow, intricate patterns began to surface on the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella. These patterns flowed like water and swirled like mist, intertwining with each other to form mysterious designs that seemed to contain the secrets of the universe, compelling one to explore their deeper meaning.
As the light grew stronger, anomalies began to appear around Luo Li Island. Streams of Spiritual Energy gathered from all directions, swirling around the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella. Gold, azure, blue, red, and brown-yellow hues interwove to form a magnificent multicolored light screen, which cast the entire Luo Li Island into a fairyland-like splendor.
Under the illumination of this light screen, all beings on Luo Li Island felt a tremendous pressure. Cultivators with lower cultivation levels couldn't help but kneel down, worshiping in the direction of the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella. The higher-level Cultivators showed looks of amazement, aware that only the emergence of a precious treasure could cause such a celestial phenomenon.
Amidst this oppressive force, Yu Qingtan remained unusually calm. Her eyes closed, she tuned into the changes brought about by the upgrade of her Lifebound Artifact. She could distinctly feel the power within the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella growing stronger, as if a formidable force was emerging from its interior.
Over time, the phenomena surrounding the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella gradually subsided. Finally, as all of the light faded away, the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella had completed its metamorphosis.
A woman who bore a striking resemblance to Yu Qingtan, yet appeared to be a delicate young lady, materialized before her. She spoke with a joyful smile, "Master, I've become a Middle-grade Dao Artifact now, and I'm so happy!"
This was naturally the Artifact Spirit of the Five Elements Canglan Umbrella, Xiaowu. Now, Xiaowu was even more lively than before, and unless scrutinized closely with Divine Sense, one couldn't tell that she was an Artifact Spirit.
"Xiaowu is truly amazing!" Yu Qingtan smiled as she gently stroked Xiaowu's head, praising her, then she drew the Five Elements Canglan Sword from the umbrella and began to comprehend the changes following its transformation into a Middle-grade Dao Artifact.
A Middle-grade Dao Artifact was typically a piece of equipment that only a Divine Transformation Cultivator could wield to its true potential. Since it was her Lifebound Artifact, Yu Qingtan didn't have to worry about the consumption issue, and she could unleash its full might.
With it, Yu Qingtan no longer had to rely on Demon Venerable Bai Chen and dared to face God Transformation Honorables directly.
Half a month later, Yu Qingtan returned to Hanmo Immortal City in the Eastern Region and then traveled to the Western Regions using the Cross-Domain Transmission Array.
The endpoint of the teleportation was Mount Ling in the Western Regions, a vast mountain range stretching tens of thousands of miles, also the holy land of the Western Region Buddhist Sect.
Below the Mount Ling, there was an Immortal City named Chanyin Immortal City, which was the exact location where Yu Qingtan had teleported to.
As soon as Yu Qingtan stepped into the city, she was enveloped by the strong Buddhist aura of the place. Dressed in a pale blue Taoist robe, she moved amongst the many monks and secular Buddhist disciples, like a refreshing addition to the scenery.
Before arriving, Yu Qingtan had carefully learned about some of the situations in the Western Regions. In the Western Regions, most people were believers of Buddhism, but to become a practitioner in a temple was not easy. The majority were just secular disciples, and the status gap between the two was immense.
Yu Qingtan, as usual, purchased a property in Chanyin Immortal City and then hired a Foundation Establishment Stage woman named A Lian to guide her around the city.
The architecture in the city was ancient and elegant, with gold-topped red walls and upturned eaves, as if each building was telling a thousand-year-old Buddhist tale. On either side of the streets, green trees offered shade, and flowers bloomed profusely, while the fresh air was filled with a faint sandalwood scent, calming the mind and soul.
Yu Qingtan and her guide made their way to the center of Chanyin Immortal City, to a Wan Buddha Plaza, named so because in the center of the plaza stood the Wan Buddha Pagoda, said to enshrine the relics of over ten thousand high monks.
Approaching within a hundred yards of the Wan Buddha Pagoda was forbidden, and as A Lian was explaining this to Yu Qingtan, a man suddenly crossed over the railing and charged to within five yards of the pagoda before yelling, "Ah Jiao, my heart for you is witnessed by ten thousand Buddhas!"
Then his body burst into white flames, and within a single breath, he became a man of fire before turning to ashes in mere moments.
Yu Qingtan had intended to intervene, but realized this was a late-stage Foundation Establishment male cultivator who had ignited his soul with a special method. By the time she reacted, it was already too late to save him.
Watching the scene before her, Yu Qingtan's heart involuntarily tightened, as the decisiveness and madness of the act shook her. She knew that this was an extreme way of expressing emotions in Buddhism, known as "self-immolation of the soul."
Soon, a crowd gathered, and there was a multitude of opinions about the incident. It was only after the intervention of the City Lord's Mansion that the matter was settled.
From the information Yu Qingtan overheard, she learned that the man's name was Li Hao, and he was deeply in love with a woman named Ah Jiao, and the two were lovers. The Western Regions had only a few temples where marriage was forbidden, so Yu Qingtan was not surprised by this.
Li Hao came from a poor family, but he had good Buddhist cultivation talent. He worked daily in a shop using Buddhist small transmutation magic to process Demon Race materials and refine Demon Race butter, with most of the Spirit Stones he earned given to Ah Jiao.
Unfortunately, Ah Jiao did not truly appreciate him; what she wanted was to marry an official monk. However, she couldn't bear to part with the Spirit Stones Li Hao provided, so she kept leading him on.
Recently, as Li Hao had been pressuring her about forming a Daoist couple, she happened to meet an attractive young monk. Thus, she used the excuse that Li Hao didn't love her enough to break up with him, resulting in this tragedy.
Yu Qingtan let out a soft sigh, disapproving in her heart of such actions. She believed that although love is beautiful, life is even more precious and should not be easily given up for love.
Yu Qingtan no longer felt like continuing her tour and returned to the residence she had purchased.
The next day, Yu Qingtan left the Chanyin Immortal City and headed towards the Great Thunderclap Monastery on Mount Ling.
