chapter 6
6 – Breaking Off Marriage (2)
It is not that simple to break off marriage between high-ranking nobles in the Empire.
The imperial family does not want the power of high-ranking nobles to grow too large, so to prevent marriages between nobles with strong power, marriages between dukes and higher nobles must be approved by the imperial family.
A high-ranking aristocrat’s marriage break requires the approval of the imperial family, as it can be seen as damaging the honor of the imperial family simply by breaking the relationship established by the imperial family.
A day after submitting the letter of divorce to the imperial family, the emperor ordered me and his father to enter the palace. As it was expected, my father and I headed for the imperial palace after completing simple preparations.

Not even a week after the ball at the palace, the emperor’s face, which he saw again, still looked pensive.
“Welcome to the Marquis of Lombardy and Youngsik.”
“Meet the Sun of the Empire.”
As my father bowed to the emperor in a formal greeting, my father followed suit and bowed to the emperor.
“Yes, both of them are unusual even at first glance, befitting people from the Lombardy family who have been teachers of the imperial family for generations.”
“It is embarrassing to rely on past fame.”
At his father’s answer, the emperor laughed lightly and then continued.
“But these days, a family that doesn’t even have the reputation of the past is giving Lombardi a hard time?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
The family without even the reputation of the past that the emperor speaks of must be the Argenta family. Even though the emperor himself bestowed the title on his heart, he seems to have a grudge against Argenta, who didn’t help at all when he was pushed to the back room.
“I read the newspaper yesterday morning too. It’s just embarrassing for my son to lay his hands on a young lady who has a fiancée. He didn’t have a bad personality, so I trusted him… But, after all, there’s no one to trust.”
Since neither my father nor I had anything to say to answer the emperor’s self-talk, we remained silent, and the emperor continued talking.
“For me, there is no reason or justification to oppose your breakup. But I don’t know how my sons will turn out. And the Argenta family has already sent a letter to the imperial family stating that they oppose the breakup.”
“It may not be possible to break up the engagement… Is that what you want to say?”
“I just want to say that it might be.”
The emperor is already old. He would have wanted to push the Argenta family into a difficult situation by supporting the marriage breakup, but he already has neither the energy nor the desire.
“Please step back. Anyway, take care of yourself. The divorce suit you applied for will be held in a week.”
The emperor ordered us to celebrate, and the guards escorted us outside.
Since there is no reason to remain in the imperial palace now, an imperial servant approached us while we were leaving the imperial palace to return to the marquis’ residence.
“Are the Marquis of Lombardi and his son correct?”
“Right?”
“The 2nd Prince wants to see you two.”

As I followed the servant to the second prince’s palace, I reminded her of her memories of the second prince.
I don’t have much experience seeing the second prince myself, but he was the male lead in a novel I read. So he can be confident that he knows something about him.
He was the male lead as if drawn on a drawing paper. He was the perfect male protagonist in every aspect, from his outstanding military strength to his outstanding appearance, being kind only to Seria, who was the female protagonist, and infinitely cruel to the wicked.
But what is the reason he wants to meet me now? He called me and his father together, but the person he really wants to see would be me.
“Here it is.”
Looking at the room the servant led me to, I saw a door with a large imperial family pattern in sight. The servant opened the door, revealing the image of the second prince sitting at the table.
“Nice to meet you. Marquis, English style of Lombardy.”
“Meet the little sun.”
They exchanged greetings in an awkward atmosphere. What was the intention of inviting us even though the 2nd prince clearly knew that we would have bad feelings for him?
I thought I might get angry when I saw the 2nd prince, but it wasn’t so so I quietly sat down at the seat led by the servant.
“First of all, I would like to apologize to Youngsik Lombardi.”
With that, the 2nd prince stood up and bowed her head. I looked at him quietly and asked as he raised his head again.
“What are you referring to as an apology for something?”
“…I apologize for what happened between me and Lady Argenta.”
“Do I need to apologize? Lady Argenta and I will become strangers if we go ahead with the breakup.”
I deliberately responded in a mocking tone to him. If your lover cheated on you and broke up, and the person apologized the next day for cheating on you, how many people would accept that apology?
It can be more or less. But to be clear, I am not that kind of person.
“I don’t think you need to hear any more about that. I will just get up.”
As I was about to get up, the 2nd Prince urgently told me.
“The night of the Imperial Palace Ball was a smoke. She and I have no feelings for each other, and the photos taken are crudely manipulated.”
I responded coldly to his unspeakable words.
“You don’t have to take Seria’s side by defending her without heart. Anyway, I know that the prince wants me and Seria to break up our engagement.”
“No.”
“Looks like it really isn’t worth listening to anymore. Let’s go.”
Then, the 2nd prince did not open her mouth anymore and calmly saw us off.
“Take the two of you to the outside of the imperial palace.”

“I didn’t get anything in the end. After all, breaking up marriage is not so easy because politics is involved.”
As my father said. Today, all I came to hear was the emperor’s words that breaking up marriage might be difficult after all, and the second prince’s useless excuses.
It may seem that way on the surface. But in my heart, I was able to catch a clue from the emperor’s words.
Inwardly, the emperor hated Argenta and seemed to want the honor of the Argenta family to be damaged. If you make him come out a little more actively, it may be possible to break the engagement.

No matter how much the emperor was pushed into the back room, he still had enough power to break off a nobleman’s marriage.
And I have a way to actively get him out. I recalled the face of the customer from the upper ranks I met after escaping from the imperial ball.
An exotic girl with black hair covered her face with a black cape, but when she took off the cape, she looked more confident than anyone else.
“Jack.”
I called a servant to assist me.
“Yes.”
“That customer from the other day, do you know where to contact me?”
“Yes. We can contact you right away.”
“Make an appointment right away.”

When I reached the mansion by carriage, I felt a commotion in front of the Marquis.
Then my father signaled to the coachman to stop the carriage, and when the carriage stopped, he jumped out of the carriage and headed in the direction of the commotion. As I followed him and reached the place, I saw that the butler was making a troubled expression.
“No. The Marquis and Cesar have gone out, and I don’t know when I’ll be back either?”
“Then I will wait here until Cesar returns. So, do you have anything to say?”
At the familiar voice I heard, I looked inside the wagon that was leaving the butler and the scuffle.
And I was able to spot a familiar gray-haired woman.
“Ah… Cesar.”
The butler looked at me and looked at me with an expression that he did not expect to come under such circumstances.
“Look aside.” “…Yes.”
It seems like a lot of time has passed since that day, but only two days have passed. It’s a very fast cycle for me and her Seria, who usually meet once a month or not, but I was a little hesitant at the unfamiliarity of seeing her for the first time in a while.
“Cesar.”
“Seria. What are you doing here?”
She came up to me after getting out of her wagon.
“Cesar, are you really going to do this?”
When she came right in front of her, she smelled of her delicate rose. Even in this situation, I must have had the spirit to dress up.
“Seria, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Are you really going to break up with me? Isn’t it?”
Are you still not fully aware of the situation? As I put on a puzzled look, she continued her story.
“Cesar, I am so sorry. I won’t meet other men from now on and only look at you, so stop acting like this.”
Without changing her expression, she threw at my feet the letter of divorce that I had sent to the duke yesterday.
Seeing as if the letter of engagement I sent was just a sign of dissatisfaction, I picked up the letter of engagement that had fallen under my feet.
“Seria, don’t do anything unnecessary, take this and go home right away.”
When Seria heard me, she bit her bottom lip in resentment.
“I’ll come back tomorrow. Until then, you will have to change your attitude.”
