My Devourer System: Rise of the Bastard Son

Chapter 61: 61—Unreal

The High-rank wolf's presence was enough to make a man's knees buckle with fear. It towered over everything, and each step shook the battlefield. Its copper-red fur, and vicious yellow eyes glued people's feet to the ground.

Lucen's body screamed. His fingers tighten over his silver spear, the thought of getting close to the wolf chilled his blood. Death howled his name, and he ran straight at it.

Brock roared and the earth rose. The black, blood-soaked field surged, forming a head, then two arms, a chest and legs. Two eyes holes formed on its collosal head, and a smiling mouth carved its place below them

Lucen took off to give them space, but he couldn't help but crane his neck as this stone golem rose. A bit taller than the massive wolf in front of it.

But Brock wasn't done. Fire mana glowed from him, and the golem began to smoke and steam. Fire and earth elemental mana began to mixed in the golem's body

The High-rank pounced on the golem, and it was met with a punch that looked so slow when something was that big. Lucen slammed his spear into the earth as the collided. A shockwave rolled over the battlefield

Anything not firmly rooted to the earth was pushed out their feet. The men, wolves, even topsoil were all blown away by the titanic clash.

Lucen gasped. Was Brock really just a Mid-tier Knight? The golem's smoking stone turned red hot, scalding the wolf clinging to it. The savage beast ignored the heat and bit into the stone arm of the golem.

A shimmered cloud of air disturbed their battle, and a fire ball followed it shortly. The wolf's head was obscured in a brilliant explosion. Kon and Hither looked on, scared, but not running. Helie gritted her teeth, and sent her whip out, cutting through the smoke to attack the wolf's eyes.

However, when the smoke cleared, the wolf was unharmed by their attacks. Its fur was slightly singed, and its eyes twitched as Helie's whip entered them. With a furious howl, it slammed its horned head against the golem's head.

The golem staggered back, but before the wolf could attack more. More fireballs streaked through the air and exploded around the wolf. Lucen grinned as Knights sent spells flying. Wind blades, jets of water, and boulders.

The wolf was stronger than a Top-tier Knight, but put enough Low and Mid rank Knights together, and the scales tipped. Three Knights dashed towards the wolf, while others sent spells at the High-rank when not under attack.

Lucen ran around the beast, enchanting his spear with as many breaths as he could muster. He dodged random swipes, flying spells, and jumped over the occasional corpse.

He jumped straight over a Stalker wolf battling a knight and some soldiers, and was finally behind the High-rank wolf. He raised his spear and took aim, praying nothing attacked him now.

He could feel his mana moving more according to his commands. He ignored the explosions of the fight in front of him, and sank into himself. Other than feeling like shit, his soul had really started to form a solid form.

He could feel the Devourer system too, a gaping pit in his soul. He resisted the urge to call on Hunger mana with so many people around. He felt his control of mana already outside his body growing.

The wind around his spear howled, [Wind's Breath] optimized more for the attack he had planned. He opened his eyes, prepared to end this, and found the High-rank wolf looking straight at him.

His heart quivered. It was looking right at him, why? Could it sense the mana growing around him.

[Lucen, move. It senses the danger. It's going to come for you.]

Lucen turned and ran. No disgrace in this one however. He needed to get out of—

The wolf slammed its horns into the golem's chest, and turned, dashing towards him.

The men, even the other wolves, all turned and ran. The wolf's huge red body parted the sea of people, and each of its steps shook the earth

Seeing something that big move faster than him, sent an irrational panic into his heart. He tore down the field as fast as he ever ran, but the distance kept shrinking. Each of his steps were punctuated the growing tremor of the ground as the wolf drew nearer

Death. He would die. His heart hammered against his chest, and drowned out the noise of the world. He turned back, it was right behind him.

Its white teeth half his height, mouth so wide, it won't snap Lucen up in one bite. Shoot the spear down his throat! He screamed internally, it wouldn't do much. But if he was dying, then he'd go down with the Fiend

The golem slammed onto the wolf's back. Lucen released his spear and it shot into the wolves mouth. Lucen purposely jumped, and let the shockwave carry him away from the gaping maw of the wolf.

He rolled against the ground, cursing. That was too fucking close. The fear had taken its toll on his body. What almost two hours of fighting couldn't do, ten seconds did double of it. The brief chase left his legs vibrating. A piercing pain in his chest made it hard to breathe.

He dismissed his spear and resummoned it. But was there any use? The wolf and the golem were tumbling over the ground. Brock ran after, and gave Lucen a pointed stare that said stay away.

But he didn't want to. He wanted to kill the wolf, steal its power, and get over the fear that he just felt. There was just no way for him to win.

[I can provide one way. It's rather smart really, and we'll kill the High-rank and steal its incredible power. Hehehe. But if we fail it will kill us. And if we don't do it right the Lightcloaks will execute us. But hey, you can't catch a fish without fishing… that doesn't sound like a good analogy.]
