Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Mining
Schutz widened his eyes. "Of course we don't!"
Wagner looked a little embarrassed and said, "Young man, even if you cleared out my entire blacksmith shop, the most you could do is upgrade that sword to around level 40 or 50. And without the right materials, you won't even be able to break through further."
Paimon muttered, "Wow, your shop is seriously poor…"
Schutz explained, "Do you even know how many materials it takes to enhance a four-star weapon? Honestly, we're doing better than most shops. Try somewhere else—you'll be lucky to even get a weapon to level 20."
Paimon said, "Well, who knows? Maybe some place actually sells five-star weapons."
"Hmph, five-star weapons? Let's be real—four-star weapons alone are rare enough. In all of Mondstadt, who else but me can forge one?
Forging requires sweat and labor. That's the secret I've followed for decades!
But those other so-called blacksmiths just look for shortcuts—they don't count as true craftsmen."
Wagner continued, "Young man, I can guess what you're thinking. You must be an adventurer with a Vision, right? I do have some materials here, but I'm sorry—I can't sell all of them to you. Other adventurers need them too."
"How much can you provide then?"
Wagner said, "Judging from your sword, it's already at about level 10, right? I can give you enough ore to get it up to around level 30."
"What about weapons? Using them as enhancement fodder works too."
Wagner shook his head. "With monsters increasing outside the city, both the Knights and adventurers are desperate for weapons. There's no way I can sell mine just to be used as enhancement material."
"Sigh, fine, you have a point."
Wagner added, "However, I know of some locations where ore is produced. If you're confident in your strength, you could go gather it yourself."
"Sounds good. Thanks."
So after that, Zephyr spent several tens of thousands of Mora to purchase some Enhancement Ore. Luckily, Uncle Wagner also had a few breakthrough materials available, which he bought together. His weapon was directly upgraded to level 20.
Then, using the remaining ore, he boosted it further to around level 30.
"Mm, this is way stronger than before."
"Young man, here's a map. I'd like to trouble you with something—if you're willing?"
"Let's hear it."
"I've heard that recently, someone found a strange type of crystal ore in the wild. It's called Magic Crystal Ore, and it contains several times the energy of regular ore.
To be frank, I can't properly refine it—maybe it's beyond what a blacksmith's skill alone can handle. I've marked the location of this ore on your map. Could you help me gather some?"
"No problem."
"Thank you, young man. And another favor—if you figure out a way to work with this material, please let me know. Hmph, for the pride of all blacksmiths, I will figure out how to master those stones someday."
Zephyr scratched his head. "I'll do my best."
After saying goodbye to Uncle Wagner, both Zephyr and Lumine were in high spirits. Their weapon had jumped from level 10 to 30, significantly boosting their combat power. Of course they were excited.
As they walked toward Mondstadt's main gate, they suddenly saw someone standing under a small tree in the distance, looking sorrowful and melancholic.
"Sigh… Stanley… I really wish I could have one more drink with you…"
Paimon asked, "Who's that?"
A voice responded, "Oh, that man? That's Mr. Stanley."
"Stanley? That's weird. Why did he say he wants to drink with himself? What a strange guy… By the way, who are you?"
The man wore a knight's armor. He saluted and said, "My name is Miles. I'm a city guard of Mondstadt. My mission is to protect the city's merchants, residents, and travelers."
"…So in other words, adventurers aren't in your protection range, huh."
"Only those with a certain level of strength choose to become adventurers. I believe they can take care of themselves. Miss Traveler, are you heading out?"
"You know me?"
"Hehe, it's understandable if you don't remember. I was one of the knights chasing the Strange Bird yesterday."
"Oh, I see."
"Yesterday, the Knights of Favonius held a meeting and concluded that we had apprehended the wrong person. We're truly sorry about that. So today, I was sent to ask if there's anything you need help with. Our Knights will do our best to assist."
Paimon narrowed her eyes. "Really? While that sounds convincing, Paimon don't think that's the only reason you're here."
"Ahem, no, of course not."
Miles's eyes darted evasively.
"You're acting really suspicious."
Zephyr didn't really care what this level-10 little knight was scheming. He asked, "Do you guys have any magic ore?"
"Magic ore? You mean Enhancement Ore, right? Of course we do. The Knights' treasury has plenty of it. If you need some, I can request it from Acting Grand Master Jean. I'm sure she'd approve."
"…Uh, never mind then. I'll just go mining myself."
No way he was going to face Jean right now.
"Safe travels."
After leaving, Paimon said, "Paimon get the feeling that guy had some ulterior motive."
"How can you tell?"
"Just a hunch!"
Just then, they spotted a knight lazily stretching behind a tree, looking completely relaxed and carefree.
Zephyr walked up to him and said, "Well, well, what are you doing here?"
The man jumped in surprise.
"Y-You... hello! Is there anything the Knights can assist you with?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm on break… ahem, I mean I'm patrolling Mondstadt's blind spots! No, really, I'm not slacking off, I swear!"
Paimon squinted at him, clearly unimpressed. "Wow, Paimon didn't expect Mondstadt to have knights like this."
"Ahem, forgive me for the poor impression. I mean, Mondstadt's always so peaceful—me slacking off... I mean, enjoying some flexible duty time doesn't really hurt anyone.
Honestly, if I had joined the Adventurers' Guild back then, my life might be more exciting."
Paimon asked curiously, "Why do you think that?"
"Just imagine it—if I were an adventurer, I could travel freely across the Seven Nations and make a living through adventures. Doesn't that sound like fun?"
The knight's face lit up with longing.
Paimon thought about that kind of life and said, "Yeah… that does sound pretty nice."
"Right? And I always feel like the Knights are a little too uptight. The Adventurers' Guild doesn't have all those annoying rules, and there are so many interesting people there.
Take Fischl, for example. I don't always understand what she's saying, but she's so cool!
If I had joined the Guild, maybe I'd be her partner by now. I've even thought of a title for myself—how does Demon King of Retribution sound? Pretty badass, right?"
Paimon whispered, "Is this guy… a total chuunibyou? Also, who's this Fischl he's talking about? Do you know her?"
