Chapter 382: Aris II
"What is that?" Aris hissed.
Sereth stood at the chamber's edge, arms crossed.
"Predation Nullform. Rhythmless Class. Created by the Tower's memory collapse after Echoia's failed Movement."
"It doesn't have a beat," she said, horror dawning.
"Exactly. It eats rhythm. Eats breath. You'll start feeling like your heart's forgetting how to pump."
Aris felt it already.
Her limbs slowed. Her ears rang.
Her left hand went numb.
She swung the baton.
Clumsy. Wide. No form.
The echo-glyphs didn't respond.
The Nullform advanced, not quickly—just inevitably.
Every time it touched the ground, the floor forgot it had ever existed there. Aris stepped backward, but her foot landed on a tile that was no longer remembered by the Tower.
She fell. Hard.
Blood from her elbow kissed the glyphs.
"You've got thirty seconds," Sereth called out.
"Then what?"
"Then the floor forgets you too."
Aris looked at the baton.
She hadn't trained. No memory forms. No Shell theory.
Just instinct.
Just will.
And then she remembered.
That moment.
Back on Floor 2.
Her hand glowing. The gauntlet broken. And her fist landing perfectly.
Not because she knew what she was doing.
Because she didn't hesitate.
"Okay," she whispered, eyes closing.
"Forget the rules."
"Just move."
SECTION II – Pulse Awakened
She stood. Not stable. Not graceful.
But centered.
The baton hovered in her hand like a breath not yet released.
She inhaled.
And then she moved.
Not like a dancer.
Not like a soldier.
But like a flare breaking through silence.
Her swing was ugly—but real.
It caught the Nullform's limb as it reached for her—and the Tower reacted.
The glyphs flared white-hot.
The baton sang.
[Shell Reverb Initiated: Formless Trigger – Variant Unregistered]
[Tempo Response: 2.1 Beat Layer – Accelerated Instinct Override]
She ducked. Slid. Spun.
And hit the thing again—this time in its center.
It screamed.
But it didn't make a sound.
Only the glyphs screamed for it.
They bent inward, rippling like water.
And Aris struck again.
The baton pulsed in time with her heartbeat.
Left-right-step-fake-slide-strike.
A crude rhythm. Uneven. Wild.
But hers.
The Tower acknowledged it.
[Shell Pulse Affinity increased: 9.6% – Unique Instinctive Tempo Established]
The Nullform reeled.
Its limbs began to unravel—its core collapsing from too much presence.
It couldn't exist where rhythm reigned.
And Aris?
She swung the baton over her head, shouting—
"REMEMBER THIS—"
And brought it down.
The creature shattered.
The glyphs around her glowed warm for the first time.
The broken echo-crystals lifted slightly, flickering to life with fragments of sound.
Not full compositions.
Just potential.
Sereth stepped out from the shadows, arms no longer crossed.
He whistled.
"You broke rhythm rules and invented your own beat."
"That good or bad?" Aris panted.
He smirked. "That means you're ready to be a problem."
She dropped the baton, shaking.
"You going to keep testing me?"
"Of course."
"Good."
"Why?"
She grinned, teeth bloodstained. "Because if I'm going to climb this cursed Tower…"
She raised her hand.
The Sovereign mark returned—faint, flickering, but not gone.
"...I'm gonna do it my way."
The Reverb Hollow – Floor 3, Sublevel Training Ring
They called it the Tempo Crucible.
Not because it was fiery.
Because it burned you out with time.
Aris had been swinging the baton for over two hours, her arms trembling, sweat stinging her eyes, the dull taste of iron in her mouth. Every time her rhythm faltered—even slightly—Sereth's crystalline chime staff would strike the floor beside her.
The glyph would flash red.
And the rhythm illusion would collapse.
"You lost the backbeat again," Sereth muttered from his perch.
"It's like dancing blindfolded in a hurricane," Aris snapped.
"Good. Get used to it. The Tower's tempo only ever bends if you punch first."
She swung again.
Slash. Roll. Pivot.
A training construct shimmered before her—a simulated Aberration: low-tier, weak core, spongy timing.
But it moved unpredictably.
Off-beat.
And it changed tempo mid-assault.
She had to adjust. Not just match it, but impose her own rhythm over it.
She grit her teeth.
Closed her eyes.
Listened.
And felt the pulse beneath the world.
Like a heartbeat under the stone.
It wasn't a sound.
It was pressure.
And she moved with it.
crack
Her baton hit dead center.
The construct burst.
The glyphs turned green.
For the first time.
Sereth leaned forward.
Eyes thoughtful.
"You're not just adapting."
"You're syncing."
Aris dropped to one knee, gasping for breath.
"Tell me that's the end of it."
"That was warm-up."
She groaned and collapsed flat onto her back.
"Then I'll die beautifully."
Sereth actually chuckled.
"You're too stubborn to die."
Meanwhile – Floor 4: Ascension Guild Bastion
At the summit of Floor 4, inside a marble citadel overlooking the Resonance Gardens, a half-dozen cloaked figures watched a projection of Aris's battle recordings.
They were system-only records—grainy, distant.
But clear enough to see the mark flare on her palm.
"She's not registered with any Clan," said one.
"No training. No approval. No placement. Yet she defeated a Broken Drummer and triggered Reverb?"
Another turned sharply.
"And she bears his mark."
Silence.
Leon's mark was outlawed here—ever since he rewrote the Fifth Movement and refused to license it to the central Tower guilds.
"That makes her a Sovereign-Touched Rogue," the lead finally said. "And therefore… a threat."
A sealed parchment was signed.
[Bounty Issued – Target: Aris Vale]
[Status: Capture or Kill – Floor 5 Enforcement Team Deployed]
Back at the Hollow
Aris sat on a ledge, sipping bitter mineral tea Sereth insisted helped "center your tempo receptors."
It tasted like sadness and rust.
"Why do you care?" she asked. "About the Tower. About teaching someone like me."
Sereth didn't look up from tuning his drum.
"I watched the last Sovereign burn herself alive trying to change this place."
"Echoia?"
He nodded once.
"She thought if she just sang loud enough, the Tower would remember mercy."
"It didn't."
"But Leon," he added after a pause. "He didn't ask for mercy."
"He made the Tower change tempo."
"Now... it hates the noise he left behind."
Aris looked down at her hand. The Sovereign mark was faint now, almost invisible—but still warm.
"And me?"
"You're noise," Sereth said. "Untrained, unsanctioned, unbroken."
"And that means they'll come for you."
She nodded slowly.
"Then we make a little more noise."
