Chapter 24: Chapter 24: A Step Closer
The mansion was filled with its usual warmth and liveliness, but a quiet, unnoticed shift had begun. The protagonist had started to see the changes in his father—the way he always tried to be near, the gentle smiles he sent his way, and the silent pain in his eyes whenever he hesitated to respond. The little boy didn't fully understand these emotions, but something deep inside him stirred. A strange, unfamiliar feeling settled in his chest whenever he caught his father looking at him with so much longing.
Mama (Emma) and the Sisters' Encouragement
That night, as the boy lay in bed with Mama (Emma), snuggled safely in her embrace, she gently stroked his hair. "My love," she whispered, "have you noticed how hard your papa is trying?"
The little boy blinked sleepily, clutching her dress. "Mm."
She smiled, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "He loves you very much, sweetheart. And just like you were hurt when he left, he was also hurting. He thought he was doing what was best for you, but he made a mistake. Just like how sometimes you drop your favorite toy, and it gets a little scratched—but that doesn't mean you don't love it anymore, right?"
The boy thought for a moment before giving a tiny nod.
"Papa wants to make things right, baby," she continued. "He just doesn't know how. Maybe… if you let him, just a little, he can show you how much he loves you."
His sisters also played their part in helping him understand.
"Hey, little one," Olivia whispered the next morning, scooping him into her arms. "Did you know Papa used to carry you on his shoulders and run around the house until you fell asleep?"
Sophia nodded as she smoothed the boy's hair. "He worked so hard to give you the best life, but he didn't realize that the best life wasn't money—it was just being with you."
Mia chuckled, poking his cheek. "And did you see how sad he looked when you ignored him today? You're making a big, strong man look like a lost puppy."
The protagonist didn't say anything, but their words lingered in his heart. He didn't push them away like before.
An Unspoken Gesture
That evening, as he wandered into the living room, he saw his father sitting alone on the couch, an old photograph in his hands. The man's eyes were full of sorrow as he traced his fingers over the picture. It was a photo of them—his father holding him as a baby, smiling brightly.
Something inside the little boy ached. He didn't fully understand it, but seeing his father look so sad made his chest feel tight.
Slowly, hesitantly, he walked forward and climbed onto the couch beside him. His father froze, his breath catching, afraid to move and scare his son away.
For a moment, they sat in silence. Then, in the smallest of movements, the little boy leaned against his father's arm. It was barely anything, just a tiny shift in posture, but for his father, it felt like the whole world had opened up. His heart pounded, and he fought back the tears burning in his eyes.
Gently, carefully, he lifted his hand and placed it around his son's small shoulders, holding him as if he were made of the most delicate glass.
The boy didn't pull away.
Mama (Emma) and the Sisters' Reactions
From a distance, Mama (Emma) and the sisters watched, their hearts swelling with emotion.
Mama (Emma) placed a hand over her heart, whispering, "It's happening… our baby is slowly accepting him."
Lily wiped a small tear from her eye, pretending it wasn't there. Charlotte smiled softly. "Papa deserves this moment."
The sisters exchanged glances, silently agreeing not to interrupt. This was the beginning of something precious.
For the first time in a long time, the father felt hope. He knew there was still a long way to go, but this small moment—this unspoken trust—was more than enough to keep him going.
And as his little son rested against him, for the first time, he felt like he was home again.
