Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Realization and Protection
The sun is just beginning to set, casting a warm golden light over the mansion's grand lawn. It's a peaceful evening, the kind where everything feels still, as if the world outside has momentarily paused. Emma sits next to me on the balcony, her arm around my shoulders, holding me close as we watch the horizon. There's something comforting about the way she sits so still beside me, her presence a steady reassurance.
I don't know why I've started to feel this way, but I do. Every day, it feels like the pull to her gets stronger. I'm starting to realize just how much I need her around. And I don't mind it. I don't mind that she's always there, always watching out for me, always loving me. It feels right. It feels like I'm home.
She leans down to kiss the top of my head, and I tilt my face up to her, a small smile tugging at the corners of my lips. I've never thought of myself as someone who needs people. My father, my memories of my biological mother, and the world I once knew felt distant and unreal. But Emma... she's different. She's here. She's real. And I'm starting to see it.
"You're quiet today," she says softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from my face. "What's on your mind, sweetheart?"
I hesitate, unsure of how to put my thoughts into words. There's so much swirling inside me, and none of it makes sense. But when I look at her—at the way she watches me with such warmth in her eyes, the way her touch feels like it's made just for me—I realize what it is.
"I think... I think I'm glad you're here," I say, my voice small but filled with truth. "I'm glad you didn't leave."
Her smile softens, and for a moment, she's silent, just gazing at me with a look in her eyes that makes my heart ache. "I'm never leaving, baby," she whispers, her voice thick with emotion. "You're my everything."
I feel a strange flutter inside my chest, something warm and full. It's the first time I've said something like that, and somehow, it feels like the right thing to say.
The next day, Emma takes me on a little trip. Just the two of us, along with my sisters. They're all excited, buzzing with energy, and I can feel the shift in the air. Something feels different today. The day feels special. We're going to one of the family's smaller retreats—a quiet, private villa tucked away in the hills.
It's an idyllic setting—lush gardens, fountains, and the sound of distant birds singing. As soon as we arrive, Emma takes my hand, leading me away from the others, her eyes never leaving me. I can feel the warmth of her fingers around mine, and the world feels like it's just us.
"Stay close to me," she says softly, her hand tightening just a little. There's a gentle urgency in her voice, as if she's afraid of something.
I don't question her. I just nod, walking with her, feeling more safe than I ever have before. The garden around us is beautiful, the flowers blooming in bright colors, but it's Emma's presence that makes everything feel perfect. We stop by a fountain, and she lowers herself to her knees to adjust my shoes, brushing her fingers over my feet with such tenderness that it makes my heart ache.
"You're such a good boy," she murmurs, her voice soft and loving. "So brave and strong."
The words make me feel warm inside, and I look at her, feeling a sense of peace I haven't felt before. I want to say something to her, something that expresses how much I appreciate everything she's done for me, but the words feel too big, too complicated.
Instead, I smile up at her, feeling my heart swell with something I can't quite name.
Later, we join the rest of the family in the villa. My sisters are all laughing and playing around, and for the first time, I find myself wanting to be a part of it. I run to them, and they pull me into their circle, making me laugh. The bond between us is beginning to feel real, like we're more than just a family by name. We're a family in every way that matters.
But even in the midst of the laughter and joy, I can't shake the feeling that something is coming. It's a strange, unsettling sense that fills the air around us, though no one else seems to notice it. Emma keeps glancing at the entrance, and when she thinks I'm not looking, her eyes harden just a little.
There's a subtle tension in her movements—like she's waiting for something.
As night falls, I'm lying in bed, tucked under the soft covers with the moonlight filtering through the windows. Emma comes to kiss me goodnight, her fingers brushing my forehead as she tucks the blanket around me.
"I love you," she says softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I love you too," I respond, the words coming more easily now. I mean them.
But as she starts to leave the room, I hear her pause by the door. There's a brief moment of silence before she turns back to me, her face full of worry.
"I'm always going to protect you," she says, her voice thick with emotion. "No matter what."
And in that moment, I realize—this isn't just about love. This is about something deeper. Something stronger. Emma is trying to protect me from more than just the dangers of the world. She's trying to shield me from something bigger. Something coming for us all.
As I close my eyes, a chill runs down my spine. I don't know what's out there, waiting, but I know that whatever it is... Emma will never let it hurt me.
And I can't help but feel safe, knowing she's by my side.
