Chapter 192: A Silent Storm
The car was wrapped in silence. Raelynn sat stiffly in the passenger seat, her fingers clasped tightly together on her lap. Her heart pounded inside her chest, echoing loudly in her own ears.
She glanced at Elion from the corner of her eyes, biting the inside of her cheek. His sharp jaw was clenched, a muscle twitching underneath his pale skin. Both of his hands gripped the steering wheel, knuckles faintly white from the pressure. His eyes stayed fixed on the road ahead.
Raelynn swallowed hard, shifting slightly in her seat. The memory of what happened at the hospital still played vividly in her mind—how Axel and Elion glared at each other like two predators ready to tear each other apart. She could still feel the tension crackling in the air, so suffocating that she thought something bad would happen if Reinhart hadn't intervened. The way Elion had wordlessly grabbed her hand and led her out of the hospital only made her heart pound faster.
He hadn't said a word since then.
Her fingers unconsciously curled against the hem of her dress, fidgeting as her nervousness grew. The silence was eating her alive. Did he hate what she did? Was he angry? What if he was truly mad at her for running off with Axel?
Raelynn bit her lower lip. It wasn't like she planned to meet Axel or make him worry. She just... wanted to hear the truth. But Elion's silence was making her regret everything.
The drive finally came to an end when they arrived at the mansion. Raelynn exhaled softly, relief flooding through her chest. The familiar sight of the towering mansion made her feel slightly better, as if she had finally escaped the heavy atmosphere in the car.
A few moments later, Reinhart's car pulled up behind them. Raelynn saw him step out and glance in their direction, but Elion didn't spare him a look. He silently climbed out of the car and walked around to open the passenger door for her.
Raelynn blinked in surprise before quickly muttering, "Thank you..."
Elion only gave a nod, his eyes distant. He still didn't say a word.
Her smile wavered, but she forced it to stay on her lips. Trying to ease the tension, she stepped out of the car carefully. Just as she was about to walk on her own, Elion's warm hand suddenly wrapped around hers, making her freeze.
Raelynn's heart skipped a beat at the unexpected gesture.
He didn't look at her. He simply held her hand firmly and guided her inside the mansion. His palm was warm, but his grip felt slightly... tense. Protective, yet restrained—as if he was holding back something.
The hallways were quiet, only the soft sound of their footsteps filling the space. The farther they walked, the more Raelynn's stomach twisted. Her mind kept replaying what happened earlier—the way Elion's eyes had darkened when he saw Axel. The way he didn't let go of her hand, even when she tried to gently pull away at the hospital.
Was he really angry?
By the time they reached her room, Raelynn could barely hold it in anymore.
Elion helped her sit down on the edge of the bed, his movements gentle. He didn't speak as he walked into the bathroom. The sound of running water soon filled the room, faint steam slipping through the crack of the door. He was probably filling the bathtub for her.
Raelynn's heart squeezed painfully.
She watched him from where she sat, her lips pressing together. He was taking care of her as always... but why did it feel so cold?
When Elion returned, he crouched down in front of her. His eyes scanned her carefully, as if checking for any sign of pain.
"Do you feel discomfort anywhere?" he finally asked.
Raelynn blinked at the sudden question. For a moment, she couldn't speak.
It was the first thing he'd said to her since they left the hospital.
"Y-Yeah..." she mumbled without thinking.
Elion's eyes instantly darkened. He stood up, his face hardening as he ready to walked away. "I'll call Sloane—"
"No! Wait!" Raelynn grabbed his hand in panic, holding on tightly.
Elion froze, staring down at her with wide eyes.
"That's not what I meant..." she whispered, biting her lip. Her heart thudded painfully inside her chest. "I meant... I feel uncomfortable because you're so quiet."
A flicker of surprise crossed Elion's face before he quickly masked it. He crouched back down, his eyes searching hers.
"...I'm not angry at you, Raelynn."
Raelynn's heart clenched harder at his words.
"Really?" she asked softly, lowering her gaze. "Then why won't you talk to me?"
Elion's lips parted slightly, as if caught off guard. He let out a slow breath before leaning closer, resting one hand on her knee.
"We're literally having a conversation now."
Raelynn blinked, staring at him in disbelief. Was he seriously playing with words right now?
"I meant earlier..." she whispered, her voice trembling. But before she could finish, she shook her head and forced a smile. "Never mind... Maybe it's just my imagination."
Elion's brows knitted together. He stayed silent for a moment, then suddenly reached out to hold her hand.
His touch was warm—firm, yet gentle.
"I'm not angry," he murmured. "I was... worried."
Raelynn's heart ached at the rawness in his voice.
"When Reinhart called me and said you ran off with Axel... I didn't know what to think. Do you know how shocked I was?" His hand slowly curled into a fist, veins faintly visible under his pale skin. "Anything could have happened to you."
Raelynn's chest tightened at his words.
She felt a pang of guilt but tried to smile softly, hoping to ease his worry.
"But nothing happened... Elion, you would've come and saved me... right?" she whispered playfully, her brown eyes flickering with warmth.
Elion's eyes locked onto hers.
For a second, he looked completely stunned—like he didn't expect her to say that.
Then slowly, the tension on his face melted. A small, almost reluctant smile tugged at his lips.
"Of course," he whispered back. "I'll always save you... and our baby."
Raelynn's heart swelled, her fingers tightening around his hand.
But just when she thought the mood had finally softened, Elion's expression suddenly turned serious again.
"But, Raelynn... there's something I need to ask from you."
Raelynn blinked, tilting her head.
"What is it?"
Elion's fingers brushed gently over the back of her hand. He took a deep breath, as if trying to find the right words.
"I know I have no control over your life... but please..." His voice dropped lower, his eyes burning into hers. "Stop meeting with Axel."
Raelynn's breath caught in her throat.
Her lips parted slightly, but no words came out. The room suddenly felt too quiet—the steady drip of water from the bathroom filling the heavy silence between them.
Elion's gaze never wavered.
He was serious.
Deadly serious.
