Chapter 18: Chapter 18: He Felt the Pain in His Heart
When he had enough sleep, Su Yu's mind felt noticeably clearer.
Last night, he had earned 300,000 yen from Haruno Yukinoshita.
This morning, Su Yu went straight to the supermarket and bought two expensive bento meals along with a box of sweets.
As he walked to school under the bright morning sun, he felt a sense of comfort.
Upon arriving at school, while changing his shoes at the lockers, he suddenly noticed someone standing in front of him.
"Yukinoshita-senpai, do you need something?" Su Yu looked up at Yukino Yukinoshita.
"…Did my sister go to see you last night?" Yukino hesitated for a moment before asking.
"Why would she look for me?" Su Yu countered.
"…I told my sister that I accepted your invitation and went to your apartment," Yukino said, her tone carrying a hint of apology.
"That alone wouldn't be enough for her to come after me, would it? If I had gone to a movie with you… or a hotel, then maybe she'd have a reason," Su Yu replied with a puzzled expression.
"If she didn't go, then forget it. But if she did… and she said something inappropriate, I'll apologize on her behalf," Yukino said seriously.
Hearing this, Su Yu shook his head.
"Yukinoshita-senpai, you're overthinking things."
"…I see. Sorry for taking up your time."
Yukino looked at Su Yu.
After finishing putting on his shoes, Su Yu stood up and looked at her.
"During lunch break, I'll leave Yui to you. She's a bit slow, but she's a kind girl."
"…I know." Yukino nodded.
Seeing her response, Su Yu didn't say anything more and headed toward his classroom.
Yukino followed behind him.
Upon reaching the upper floor, they went their separate ways in opposite directions.
When Su Yu entered the classroom, he didn't go straight to his seat like usual.
Instead, he walked directly up to Hayama Hayato.
Hayama looked up, visibly confused by Su Yu's sudden approach.
"Lunch break. Rooftop."
Su Yu's words were short and direct.
Hayama froze for a moment, unsure what Su Yu meant.
Before he could even ask, Su Yu had already walked away toward his seat.
Hayama watched Su Yu's retreating back, then glanced at Yumiko Miura.
Yumiko, sensing his gaze, met his eyes for a brief moment before quickly looking away.
"…Is this about Yumiko?" Hayama wondered internally, withdrawing his gaze.
Just as Su Yu sat down, his phone lit up slightly.
Checking the screen, he was surprised.
It was a message from Yumiko Miura—
She thanked Su Yu but also pleaded with him not to fight Hayama.
Su Yu turned to look at her.
She was also looking at him, her expression complex.
For a moment, he didn't know how to respond.
Because Yumiko's favorability toward him had increased from 30% to 40%.
If he replied that it had nothing to do with her, the favorability would definitely drop.
But if he said he was confronting Hayama because of her, their relationship would enter a delicate and ambiguous territory.
After some thought, Su Yu chose not to reply.
His goal was to maintain a friendship with Yumiko. A 40% favorability rating likely meant a mix of acknowledgment and gratitude toward him.
As long as he could hold this level until the final evaluation, he could secure an A-rank reward.
That was what Su Yu wanted.
Lunchtime
The morning passed quickly.
Su Yu took out a bento and the box of sweets he had bought earlier, then walked over to Yui Yuigahama.
"Take the sweets to the Service Club. The bento is a gift for you."
"A gift?" Yui blinked in surprise.
"Open it after you get to the club," Su Yu said, gently patting her head.
"Mm…"
Feeling the watchful gazes of their classmates, Yui's face turned bright red as she hurriedly grabbed the food and escaped from the classroom.
Once Yui was gone, Su Yu turned toward Hayama.
Before he could say anything, a familiar female voice sounded behind him.
"…Su Yu-kun."
"We're not going to fight."
Without even turning around, Su Yu responded directly to Yumiko.
After saying that, he walked out of the classroom.
Hayama followed behind him.
Yumiko watched them leave, her face full of worry.
"Don't worry, Yumiko. Su Yu-kun isn't the type to get into fights," Hina Ebina reassured her, suddenly appearing beside her.
Yumiko glanced at Hina but still looked uneasy.
On the Rooftop
Neither Su Yu nor Hayama spoke as they walked through the hallways.
They ascended the stairs and arrived at the empty rooftop.
The lack of other people suited Su Yu's intentions perfectly.
Once on the rooftop, Hayama turned to face him.
"Su Yu-kun… is this about Yumiko?"
"No. This is about you. The person you like offered me one million yen to make you give up. Aside from killing you, I'm allowed to use any method I want."
Su Yu cut straight to the point.
"…What?"
Hayama froze, unable to process what he had just heard.
Su Yu pulled out his phone.
A recording began to play—
Haruno Yukinoshita's voice came through clearly:
"Su Yu-kun, if you can make Hayama stop liking me, this 500,000 yen is yours."
"Yukinoshita-san… That's a bit difficult."
"One million yen."
"Find a woman to pretend to be with him. Set it up so that you catch them together. How about that?"
"That's not bad, but he might still try to explain himself."
"Let me think about it. I'll get back to you with an answer."
"Alright, I'll be waiting. To be honest, I only see him as a younger brother. Why can't he just accept reality? I'm the future heir of the Yukinoshita family. How could I ever be with him?"
"Yukinoshita-san, that's pretty harsh. If Hayama heard that, he'd be devastated."
"If he'd be hurt enough to give up, that would actually make things easier for me."
"Alright, I get it."
The recording ended.
Hayama stared at Su Yu's phone, his face pale.
Haruno's words felt like knives stabbing into his heart.
"…Hayama, give up. Haruno Yukinoshita is destined to take over her family's business. The person she marries will definitely be from another powerful family."
Su Yu looked at him.
"Su Yu-kun… you… why…?"
"I recorded it because I already predicted this would happen.
She asked me to do two things:
Break down Yukinoshita Yukino's emotional walls.Make sure I understand that I'm not worthy of Yukinoshita Yukino."
Su Yu sighed.
"…So you…"
"I decided to help Yui become her friend. I won't chase after something that's impossible."
Su Yu put his phone away and walked toward the railing.
Hayama opened his mouth but didn't know what to say.
He didn't want to give up. He really, really didn't.
But…
Haruno's words…
