Chapter 139: Chapter 139 : You Idiot
Kamino Ward – Afternoon
Sayaka's shoes crunch against the glass-littered sidewalk.
She moves slower than usual. Not because of injury—but because every step feels like a betrayal. Like walking away from a patient you couldn't save.
The crater looms ahead.
What was once a street is now a monument to sacrifice. Chipped pavement. Melted traffic lights. The place where he fell.
There's nothing here.
Just silence.
And dust.
But still—she had to come.
---
Flashback – The Nurse's Office
He'd stumbled in with busted knuckles and scraped elbows.
Again.
"I'm fine," he'd mumbled, always brushing it off.
"You're not fine," she'd snap, pressing antiseptic to his bruises. "You're just stupid."
He'd grin, crooked and quiet.
"Maybe. But I'm still standing."
She remembers the way his body never stayed still. Always aching. Always tired. But never still.
He fought like he didn't know when to stop.
Like someone trying to outrun the feeling of being disposable.
---
Back to Present – The Edge of the Crater
Sayaka stops walking.
She lowers herself to the ground, legs folding beneath her. The wind picks up—cool and brittle.
From her satchel, she removes a small bouquet: white hyacinths. Fresh. Clean. Quiet.
She places them gently at the crater's edge.
And then, finally—she speaks.
"You didn't have to do it."
Her voice breaks, but she doesn't cry.
"You could've let someone else. You could've walked away. You could've let yourself live, damn it."
Silence.
Just wind through the wreckage.
She clenches her fists.
"You weren't special because you kept bleeding. You were special because you kept caring."
Her hands shake.
"And now you're just—gone."
---
POV Shift – Internal
She thinks of all the times he came in injured. The times he smiled through pain. The time he told her:
"If I can't save everyone, I'll at least try to hold the line."
She hadn't believed him at first.
He was a stubborn idiot in duct-taped armor.
But now?
Now the world was calling him a hero.
Too late, of course.
They always saw the flame only after it burned out.
---
Hospital Rooftop – Flashback Fragment
She once stood with him on the roof.
A soft sunset. Empty soda cans beside them. She was scolding him again, teasing. He'd looked tired, eyes heavy.
"You really think you're making a difference?" she'd asked.
"I don't know," he said. "But someone has to try."
And now—he had.
He'd tried.
And tried.
Until he couldn't anymore.
---
Back to Present – Kamino Crater
Sayaka stands.
She brushes dust from her skirt, wipes her face.
And then she looks to the sky.
"You idiot," she whispers.
"You stupid, stubborn, beautiful idiot."
Her voice softens.
"Thank you."
---
She turns and walks away from the crater.
The bouquet remains behind, fluttering in the wind.
A simple offering.
From someone who saw the blood before the glory.
From someone who knew him before the legend.
