Chapter 29: [29] The Third Authority

"You don't possess any healing-type authorities, do you, Metatron?"

Roy suppressed the surging thrill of battle. Unlike other Campiones who fought heretical gods with beast-like ferocity, Roy was a man who believed in wisdom and knowledge. Just as humanity evolved from primitive savagery to civilization, Roy viewed those who relied on animalistic instincts in battle as regressing into beasts—and he had no desire to become one. Instead, he sought to tame the beast.

"You are correct, child of the fool. I possess no healing-type authorities. That false one, Michael, damaged my core. Now, I am but a crippled heretic god."

Metatron's severed left arm and the gaping hole in his chest showed no signs of regeneration, proving he lacked powerful immortality or healing abilities. Though the Book of Enoch hailed Metatron as the angel closest to God, apocrypha remained apocrypha. Metatron had no actual deeds to his name, meaning he couldn't manifest authorities from myths or legends. Moreover, as the Heavenly Scribe, he was a scholar, not a warrior, leaving him with almost no combat-oriented authorities.

To ordinary magicians, Metatron was an insurmountable heretic god. But to any Campione, he was an easy opponent.

Compared to Metatron, Roy knew from his own authorities just how powerful Michael—the archangel he had slain—had been. His success in killing Michael had relied partly on wisdom and decisiveness, but the greater factor had been luck—luck named Aiwass.

"Return to the apocryphal myths where you belong, Metatron! Your time wandering the earth is over. It ends now!"

Roy took a deep breath and raised his right hand high.

Among his seven authorities, he had already used the most practical, The Hand of Jacob, as well as the subsidiary ability of Sin of Sodom—Eyes of Sodom. Now, Roy was about to unleash his third authority, named—

"Sound the Seventh Trumpet!"

This was a chapter from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, the origin of Michael's title as archangel and supreme commander of the heavenly host. It was the apocalyptic legend of Michael being the first to sound the trumpet of doom, leading the angelic armies against the Beast during the Final Judgment.

"Angel, sound the trumpet of the apocalypse!!"

Roy chanted the spell in a loud voice, and immediately, a heavenly gate opened in the sky above him. Seven trumpet blasts echoed from within, so profound that any devout Christian present would recognize it as the coming of Judgment Day!

"The Last Judgment?!"

As an Italian, Erica was also a Christian. Though her faith as a knight of the 'Bronze Black Cross' was not steadfast, she still held beliefs and had read the Bible. Upon witnessing the heavenly gate open and hearing the seven archangels sound their trumpets, she knew Roy's divine authority was recreating a scene from the Book of Revelation!

From behind the heavenly gate emerged over a hundred angels, all condensed from magical energy. They had basic human forms, indistinct in gender, with wings on their backs and bodies radiating a sacred light like ethereal beings.

Erica was awestruck by these angels. Each possessed formidable power, flying in formation like a disciplined army. She had no doubt this angelic legion could slay even divine beasts. For a heretic god to eliminate these angels would require immense magical energy, and as a top-tier knight like herself, being surrounded by this angelic host would mean certain death.

Roy couldn't possibly summon millions of angels, but these hundred were already overwhelmingly powerful. Led by him, the Archangel, any heretic god would find them a formidable challenge.

Yet, upon seeing these angels, Metatron was not alarmed but overjoyed, proclaiming, "...I am the agent of God, and all deeds in heaven and earth shall be recorded by me."

Hearing Metatron also chanting a spell, Roy grew wary. He had summoned the angels precisely because he sensed Metatron was at his limit, intending for the angelic legion to finish him off.

No heretic god could be underestimated. Roy didn't know Metatron's divine authorities and feared he might possess a powerful ability activated only in dire straits. With victory so close, Roy didn't want to take risks. Metatron was no match for the angelic legion, so Roy planned to overwhelm him through sheer numbers.

As Metatron activated his authority, a book and a quill appeared in his hands. The book, formed from his divine power, began writing on its own. Immediately, Roy felt the effects of his authority, Sound the Seven Trumpets, vanish. To his shock, the angels in the sky turned their weapons toward him.

"Is this a usurpation-type authority? Did it steal one of my divine powers? What are the conditions? Why did it take my angelic legion but not my The Hand of Jacob?"

While Roy pondered the limitations and effects of Metatron's authority, Erica's alarmed cry came from behind him: "...My King, be careful!"

The heavenly host of angels charged at Roy. Seeing this, Roy frowned slightly. His feet shifted in an extremely small range, dodging the frontal thrust of an angel before delivering a punch that reduced the angel to primal ether particles.

By now, Roy was completely surrounded by these angels from all directions—above, below, left, and right. Each of them was like a mighty knight, or the finest soldier, their coordination flawless.

Roy never stopped moving his feet, alternating between punches, palm strikes, and whip-like kicks to block the angels' attacks. Every counter he launched felled another angel.

But these hundreds of angels were still too many. While it wouldn't be difficult for Roy, the Campione, to cut them down, it would waste a great deal of stamina, energy, and magical power—precisely the purpose of this authority: to exhaust the opponent through large-scale group combat and seek the opportunity for a decisive strike.

A glance from the corner of Roy's eye revealed that after Metatron had usurped his angelic legion, He did not coordinate an attack with the angelic forces. Instead, He turned away, flapping His thirty-six pairs of wings—a posture that suggested He intended to flee.

At this sight, Roy exclaimed in shock and anger, "...Metatron, you would actually choose to flee again?!"

However, Roy quickly calmed down, realizing that Metatron's choice wasn't surprising. After all, in all the authentic scriptures and apocryphal texts, Metatron was the only being recorded to have ascended from human to angel. In other words, His humanity was strong, and it was only natural for Him to make human choices.

"King!"

Upon seeing Metatron preparing to flee, Erica, despite having already witnessed the terror of the Heretic God and the Campione and knowing she stood no chance against them, still raised her sword with unwavering resolve. Filled with courage and pride, she refused to retreat even in the face of an unbeatable foe. Chanting an incantation, she sought to restrain Metatron with her own power:

"Crimson Cross Wedge..."

But before Erica could finish her chant, Roy interrupted, "...Stop, Erica! I order you to run now!"

"'King, what are you saying?"

Erica, who had been holding 'Lionheart' upright before her, halted her incantation and asked in astonishment.

"I won't repeat myself a third time. Now, immediately, without delay—get away from here, or you might die next!"

Seeing the grave expression on Roy's face, Erica hesitated only briefly before obeying. "...Understood, King! As your knight, Erica will always prioritize your command above all else."

Had Roy been in dire peril, Erica might have chosen to disobey and bravely face the enemy. But seeing that he was not in any immediate danger, she unhesitatingly chose to follow his orders.

Though this woman was quick-witted and sometimes too opinionated to the point of seeming self-righteous, once she pledged her loyalty, she truly embraced her role as a knight, willing to stake her life on it.

"Fly, Hermes' winged sandals!"

Erica activated the magic of flight, her body light as she swiftly retreated backwards.

At the same time, Roy, while battling the legion of angels, chanted a new divine incantation:

"Your sins cry out to the Lord, sulfur and heavenly fire shall consume all!"

This was the full manifestation of Roy's second authority—The Sin of Sodom.

A city-level authority that could only be unleashed once every three days, capable of annihilating the sinful city in a single strike!
