Chapter 20: [20] Crossing the Abyss of the Campione
Dressed in cardinal robes, Roy stood within the Vatican Palace, holding documents about Italy's 'Seven Sisters Magical Society Alliance.'
The Vatican Palace was originally the Pope's residence, but after Roy assumed the title of 'Holy Son' and took command of Christianity, it became his dwelling.
The Sistine Chapel's ceiling and walls preserved Michelangelo's famous frescoes, "The Book of Genesis" and "The Last Judgment," which took four years to complete. The grand hall, adorned with masterpieces by renowned artists, exuded a sacred aura.
"Seven Sisters... Isn't this just the 'Seven Sisters' from the golden age of Italian football, known as the 'Little World Cup' era? Honestly, my memory of the plot in Campione is already hazy, and I never finished it, but this reference is too amusing not to comment on."
Roy silently grumbled to himself. His current physical age was only sixteen, and the sixteen years spent in the Toaru universe had blurred most of his pre-transmigration memories.
"The Copper Black Cross is AC Milan, the Bronze Black Cross is Inter Milan, the Old Noble Lady is Juventus, the City of Lilies is Fiorence, the She-Wolf is Rome, the Blue Eagle is Lazio..."
Roy chuckled as he set the documents aside, then fell into deep thought. Though the seven magical societies conflicted slightly with his memories, making it amusing, they were undeniably the strongest forces in Italy's mystical world.
"Aiwass, what's your analysis of Pandora's Circle of Usurpation and the Heretic Gods?"
Beneath the famed painting The Last Judgment, Aiwass's radiant figure materialized behind Roy, who then posed the question.
"I've reached conclusions regarding the existence and general origins of Heretic Gods. Humans, driven by fear of the unknown and faith, conceptualized deities, then wove myths to assign them roles. Due to certain 'magical' peculiarities, a rare few divine concepts broke free from mythology, becoming Heretic Gods on earth."
"...Heretic Gods resemble divine avatars, existing due to their 'cores.' Pandora's Circle of Usurpation fuses this 'core' with humans, granting them divine abilities. Campiones could aptly be called 'simulated deities.'"
Aiwass elaborated on the relationship between Heretic Gods and Campiones, sharing the findings of the research.
"In other words, the Heretic Gods are much like Heroic Spirits, except that the incarnations of gods are far more powerful than humans who ascended to become Heroic Spirits through great deeds. The conceptual information of deities exists within myths, and the manifestation of Heretic Gods is the process by which this information takes physical form through the combined workings of this world's rules and magical energy."
Roy gave a slight nod, now thoroughly understanding the nature of Heretic Gods. This concept was nearly identical to the Heroic Spirits from the 'Fate' games he'd played in the past—except that while Heroic Spirits' information resided in the 'Throne of Heroes,' the gods' information was embedded in myths.
Both descended in the form of incarnations, with their core being 'Spiritual Foundations.' Under normal circumstances, whether it be Heroic Spirits or the incarnations of Heretic Gods, they would vanish and return after being destroyed. However, Pandora's Circle of Usurpation preserved the Spiritual Foundations of Heretic Gods and fused them with humans, thus giving birth to the Campiones.
In the world of Campiones, true gods didn't actually exist. They were merely conceptual information elevated by human faith within myths. When these concepts gained consciousness and descended upon the earth, they became Heretic Gods. When they didn't descend, they remained as gods bound by myths. This was a paradox—gods could never appear before mortals. Only Heretic Gods could manifest before them.
"So, completely eradicating gods isn't actually difficult. Gods exist because of the myths woven by humans. We must understand the cause and effect—myths came first, and gods followed. It wasn't gods that came first and then myths. As long as humanity is wiped out or human history is extinguished, the gods will naturally vanish as well."
[Note: This is a direct quote from the original Campione! series—to make gods disappear entirely, humanity must first disappear.]
This information was crucial to Roy. He wasn't fixated on merely slaying Heretic Gods to gain power but sought to explore the more fundamental truths.
Roy's goal was to "raise a sword of rebellion against his elegant father." With the so-called power of a Campione he currently wielded, facing Aleister Crowley would be as laughable as a child brandishing a toy.
Thus, Roy had to transform these toys into genuine weapons.
"Aiwass, what are your thoughts on the flaws of Campiones?"
Roy asked once more.
Though Campiones allowed mortals to ascend to greatness in a single step, bypassing countless years of tempering, their upper limit was far too low.
No matter how many Heretic Gods you slew, the amount of magical power you possessed remained the same—it didn't accumulate. Your Authorities wouldn't evolve either; only their number would increase.
The only differences between the oldest Campione and one newly born were the number of Authorities and experience. Campiones didn't grow stronger over time—they had long lost the "infinite potential" of the future.
To use a gaming analogy, becoming a Campione was like instantly leveling a mortal from 1 to 50. But that was it. Even if you granted a Campione a hundred Authorities, their upper limit would still be level 50. You could play around with various tricks, but you wouldn't actually grow any stronger.
This was the major flaw of Pandora's Circle of Usurpation as described by Aiwass. Apart from the qualitative transformation from the first time, no matter how many gods one slays afterwards, a Campione can only obtain new authorities without any fundamental change, forever unable to break through the level 50 limit.
This was not what Roy desired. Relying solely on himself, Roy naturally found it difficult to overcome this Campione constraint in a short time. However, he had Aiwass's assistance. As the "Secret Chief," an existence equal to a Demon God, Aiwass was far more powerful than all the gods of this world combined.
Compared to the mysterious space that allowed him to traverse worlds, Roy believed Aiwass was actually the greatest "cheat" aiding him.
"I need to combine this world's native knowledge with my own to refine Pandora's Circle of Usurpation, enabling you, Roy, to break through this limitation," Aiwass responded to Roy.
"Understood. I leave it to you, Aiwass! I'll also strive to absorb knowledge so your wisdom can be applied," Roy exhaled lightly as he spoke.
Though he had Aiwass's help, Roy couldn't remain idle. It was like an elementary student facing a university professor—while he didn't need to solve complex equations himself, merely transcribing the formulas dictated by the teacher, a child who didn't even recognize basic mathematical symbols couldn't write a single word even with guidance.
Roy was essentially that elementary student before Aiwass. He didn't aspire to match Aiwass's vast knowledge yet, but at the very least, he needed to enrich his understanding enough to transcribe and comprehend what Aiwass conveyed.
'Transforming Heretic Gods into materials to break my level cap... isn't this just Spirit Origin Ascension? Or basically every gacha game mechanic ever...' Roy mused self-deprecatingly.
"Alright, knowledge must be accumulated gradually, and tasks handled one by one. I should personally visit Italy's 'Seven Sisters Alliance.' Those mage associations must be hesitating—not because they dare defy a Campione's command, but because Salvatore Doni, the 'Sword King,' leaves them trapped between two Campiones, unable to choose."
With a light snort, his right hand in his pocket and his cardinal robes swaying, the crimson figure strode out of the Sistine Chapel.
"Tell me the location of the Seven Sisters Alliance's leaders. I will meet them!" Roy declared, leaving the clergy at the entrance stunned and awestruck.
The cleric never imagined the "King" would personally intervene!
