Chapter 25: Chapter 24: Father-Daughter Reconciliation
The father and son, who had initially reacted with hostility toward Ryuu, suddenly froze.
Their ghostly figures flickered slightly as they stared at him, shocked beyond belief.
"You… can see us?"
Yotsuya Kyosuke, the younger of the two, was the first to speak. His voice carried a mix of disbelief and unease.
His father, Yotsuya Takayuki, remained silent, his ghostly presence looming with hesitation.
Ryuu, standing calmly across from them, crossed his arms and gave a casual smile.
"Of course, Uncle Yotsuya. And you too, Kyosuke."
His tone was almost teasing, as if their shock was something amusing.
Then, his expression sharpened.
"You two have been a constant source of trouble for Miko. I'm here to put an end to that."
The room fell into a heavy silence.
For a moment, the two ghosts exchanged glances.
Then—
Instead of denying it, they both turned their eyes toward Miko.
Their once bewildered expressions shifted to concern.
"Miko…"
Kyosuke's voice wavered slightly.
"Wait—can you… can you actually see us?!"
Miko flinched.
She had heard that question countless times before—from terrifying spirits, from lingering ghosts…
And every time, she had to pretend she couldn't hear it.
But this time…
The ones asking were her family.
Her father and younger brother.
She clenched her fists and took a shaky breath.
Finally—
"...Yeah."
She nodded.
"I've always been able to see you."
Her voice was soft, almost trembling.
She had never admitted it before.
But now—
She couldn't hold it back anymore.
"EH?!"
Kyosuke gasped.
He immediately rushed forward, arms outstretched as if trying to hug her.
But—
His spirit body phased right through Miko.
He stumbled forward, eyes wide.
"Sis…"
His voice faltered.
Even though they could finally see each other—
Even though he could finally talk to her again—
He was still just a ghost.
Meanwhile, their father, Takayuki, remained silent.
His gaze softened.
"So that's how it is…"
His voice was quiet, almost regretful.
If Miko had been able to see them all this time…
That meant she had also seen the other things.
The spirits. The horrors. The nightmares.
She had been facing them alone.
His chest tightened.
This wasn't a joyous reunion.
It was a reminder—
That he and Kyosuke were part of her suffering.
Takayuki turned his gaze toward Ryuu.
"You… You're an exorcist, aren't you?"
Ryuu's eyes gleamed.
"Something like that."
Takayuki studied him for a long moment.
Then—
His lips curved into a faint smile.
"Then do it."
Miko snapped her head up.
"W-Wait—Dad?!"
But Takayuki didn't hesitate.
"Remove us."
His voice was firm.
"Miko has suffered enough."
Her heart clenched.
No…
No, she had just gotten them back.
She wanted to scream, wanted to tell him no.
But—
Before she could say anything, Ryuu stepped forward.
"Well… That was fast."
His tone was lighthearted, but his eyes were serious.
He raised a hand—
And his Mangekyō Sharingan flickered to life.
"Let's make this quick."
The moment his gaze locked onto the cursed spirit behind Takayuki—
Black flames erupted.
—Fwoooosh!
The dog-like cursed spirit let out a horrific shriek.
The flames of Amaterasu swallowed it whole.
Within seconds—
It was gone.
Not a single trace remained.
The room fell into silence.
Even the ghostly father and son seemed… shaken.
Ryuu exhaled slowly, then turned to Miko.
"My job's done."
Then, he tilted his head toward her.
"Now it's your turn."
Miko blinked.
"...My turn?"
Ryuu nodded.
"They're not cursed spirits. They're just lingering souls with unresolved regrets."
"If you don't want them to disappear in pain, then you should be the one to send them off properly."
Her breath caught in her throat.
Send them off… herself?
Miko lowered her head.
Her chest felt tight.
A lump formed in her throat.
She knew what she had to do.
But it hurt.
She had been holding this in for years.
And now…
It was time to say goodbye.
Her father was watching her.
"…Miko."
She looked up.
He smiled.
"I'm sorry."
Her eyes burned.
"The pudding…"
He chuckled softly.
"I should've known better than to eat it without asking."
Her chest ached.
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
"No—Dad, I'm sorry too…!"
Her voice cracked.
"I fought with you over something so stupid—"
"I never got to say sorry before you—"
She choked on her words.
Takayuki simply shook his head.
"It's okay."
His form began to glow.
His body turned transparent.
His soul was at peace.
Miko sobbed.
She reached out—
But her hands passed right through him.
Her father's gaze softened.
"Take care of your mother, okay?"
And then—
He vanished.
His soul was set free.
Miko collapsed to her knees.
"...Dad…"
Tears dripped onto the floor.
Kyosuke, watching beside her, clenched his fists.
"Sis."
She looked up.
He grinned.
"You better be happy, got it?"
His body began to fade as well.
And just before he disappeared—
He turned to Ryuu.
"Hey, you!"
Ryuu raised an eyebrow.
Kyosuke smirked.
"I'm leaving my sister's happiness to you!"
And with that—
He, too, vanished.
Leaving nothing behind.
Miko trembled.
Her hands shook.
She had finally…
Finally said goodbye.
Her father and brother—
They were gone.
But their regrets had been lifted.
Their souls were at peace.
She pressed her face into her hands, crying softly.
Ryuu stood there, watching silently.
Then—
He stepped forward.
And without a word—
He placed a hand on her head.
Miko hiccupped slightly.
She looked up.
Ryuu's expression was calm, steady.
"Don't be too sad."
His voice was quiet.
"You gave them the farewell they deserved."
Miko's lips trembled.
Then—
She suddenly leaned forward.
Her forehead pressed against his shoulder.
She didn't speak.
She simply stayed there.
Ryuu sighed.
He didn't push her away.
Instead, he let her cry.
For as long as she needed.
Because—
This was a farewell she had been waiting for her entire life.
And now…
It was finally over.
