Mr. Billionaire's Criminal Obsession

Chapter 22: Betrayal?

Ava's eyes nearly bulged out of her head as she watched Eitan wrap another set of bandages around her fingers. Her heart beat faster and she dared to hope. "Does… does that mean you're taking me in?"

Eitan was silent for a long time, making her even more fidgety. He stood up from the sofa and returned the first aid box to where he took it from.

"Don't get any silly ideas." He said as he pushed the drawer shut, strolling to sit behind his desk again. "I'm not so foolish that I would take a criminal whose origins I know nothing of."

Ava's face fell. Her hands reached for her freshly wrapped fingers but she stopped herself in time.

"I want proof." Eitan said simply as he leaned back on his chair. "Prove your sincerity to me, make me believe that you're willing to do anything for my protection… because I know that's what you want."

Ava flinched. 'He guessed that much, huh?'

It was already obvious he would figure out what she truly wanted sooner or later… especially after her pathetic display.

But she didn't regret it, even if it was pity he felt toward her, she would gladly take it. Her eyes brightened, and she was quiet for a few minutes but Eitan waited patiently.

"You're our next target."

Eitan stiffened. His expression darkened as he leaned forward slowly, his elbows resting on his desk. His eyes trailed on her like it could burn a hole through her head. "So you want to kill me?"

"No!" Ava defended immediately. "I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking when I said that. We're… supposed to steal from you, not kill you–"

Eitan put up a hand, stopping her. "Are you sure you want to give me this information?"

Ava didn't even hesitate before she nodded. "Yes."

Eitan frowned. "You're putting your whole group, the entire organisation you work for at risk. You know that."

She nodded again. "I do."

"So you plan to betray them?"

Ava froze. Betray was a strong word… but she couldn't deny that was exactly what she was doing.

"Ye–yes… but it's not my intention to let them know. I–I was thinking of working as some sort of double agent i–if you'd allow–"

"No, you'll betray them… and they'll know you did." Eitan cut in sharply.

"Sorry?"

"I want complete loyalty." He continued, taking out a paper and pen and began to scribble on it. "You cannot serve two masters at once, not with me."

Ava's stomach dropped. "They'll try to kill me! And–"

"Before they touch one of my people, they'll have to think a hundred times." Eitan remarked coolly. "The person who sent you to kill Evie must have been extremely foolish or powerful enough to mess with me."

Ava gulped. His tone switched so suddenly, she wasn't sure how to react.

"Carry on." Eitan urged. "What did you plan on stealing?"

"A few couple documents." Ava told him. "We were especially instructed to find the original of the contract you sighed with Evie Alrosa…"

Eitan's brows arched. "And how exactly were you all planning on finding that one document in this big apartment?"

Ava's head lowered. "I told a lie and they believed me." She said. "So I was sent here as… recon of sort…"

'Document? They want the document? What do they plan on doing with it?' Eitan tapped the tip of the pen on the paper repeatedly in thought. 'Who's this? And why are they messing with me? … looks like I'll need her, not just for that purpose alone...'

"I see… I'll have my lawyer draft a contract." He said. "But first, I'll have to hear what you want from me first hand."

Ava almost couldn't believe her ears. "You… want to hear what I want?"

"Plainly. Don't mince words with me."

At those words, Ava nodded intensely. "Like you said earlier, I want… no, I need your protection. If you can grant me that for just two years, I'm… I'm confident that I'll be able to find my way around…"

She didn't sound confident at all, but Eitan still nodded and scribbled down what she said. "Anything else?"

"There's… someone in my team I want you to protect too…" Ava started, taking hold of her wrist to steady herself. "Her name's Kiera, and she's like a sister to me."

Eitan raised a brow. "So you want me to take her in too? I'm afraid I can't do that."

Ava shook her head gently and she stared straight at him with unblinking eyes. "I want you to send her far away, so far away that I wouldn't even be able to reach her."

Eitan frowned. 'So she's not just doing this for herself…'

"Is that all?"

"Yes."

Eitan nodded. "If that's the case, then we'll stick with the deal I made earlier. You'll be my Wife... my eyes and ears. You will also feed me information." His gaze bore into her. "Because I know you have plenty where that came from."

'Is this what he wanted from me when he asked me to be his partner?' Ava thought. '...He doesn't care if I'm a murderer, he just wants a useful tool…'

But she didn't mind. As long as she didn't get to go back to Xandro, she was certain she would be alright, no matter how difficult things would get.

"The contract will last for two years, as you requested, Ava." Eitan's lips twitched a little, like he was amused. "Now, what do you say?"

Ava sucked in a sharp breath as she felt her knees weaken and buckle beneath her. She fell to the ground with a heavy thud.

"Thank you." She muttered softly as she blinked back tears. "Thank you so much, Mr. Berger–"

"Eitan."

Ava looked up in a daze. "Pardon?"

Eitan gently stood up from the chair behind his desk and strode toward her gracefully. Ava watched him in astonishment as he crouched in front of her with one knee and tilted her chin up with a single finger to meet his gaze.

"From today onward, it's Eitan to you. A Wife cannot be caught referring to her husband so formerly." He said, his words cutting through her like a knife. "And if you ever dare to betray me, I'll kill you myself and no one will even remember that you ever existed."
